Xirgil··on Carmakers Will Give Your Location to Police Without a Warrant, Senators Say
But if you own the hardware there's nothing to legally prevent you from severing the power to whatever sensors/hardware onstar is using, no?
Xirgil··on Egypt's pyramids may have been built on a long-lost branch of the Nile
Enough just to feed them, or enough to actually be considered payment?
Xirgil··on Egypt's pyramids may have been built on a long-lost branch of the Nile
I thought the consensus was that corvee labor was used, rather than outright slavery.
Xirgil··on GPT-4o
Interesting, I was reading some comments from Japanese users and they said the Japanese voice sounds like a (very good N1 level) foreigner speaking Japanese.
Xirgil··on Familial Transmission of Personality Is Higher Than Shown in Typical Studies
And in doing so they mention genetics.
Xirgil··on Familial Transmission of Personality Is Higher Than Shown in Typical Studies
You really don't understand why nature/genetics having a large impact on people's personality, thus behavior, and thus life outcomes is taboo?
Xirgil··on Can turning office towers into apartments save downtowns?
London has sky high rents for young professionals while also taxing them exorbitant amounts that ends up subsidize social housing for "economically inactive" people. I would not call that efficient.
Xirgil··on Microsoft closes several large Bethesda affiliated game studios
Microsoft didn't kill Gears of War out of ineptitude or malice. It's just that consumers don't want to play cover shooters anymore. There's no market for the game's core identity. People's tastes have swung hard in the opposite direction, they want movement shooters.

Do you have any recommended reading on this topic? I'd like to brush up.
Xirgil··on SpaceX discloses cause of Starship anomalies as it clears an FAA hurdle
SpaceX absolutely gets a lot of criticism. There's people shouting to nationalize it for crying out loud.
Xirgil··on Google's Gemini Headaches Spur $90B Selloff
I won't deny that there's nerfs, but do you not see how "Product reviews used to go to higher quality blogs, Reddit, Consumer Reports now are now just all content filler sites." and "People trying to sell you things are spending billions of dollars on SEO to junk up your results" are related
Xirgil··on Google's Gemini Headaches Spur $90B Selloff
Search is going downhill at least in part because they're dealing with an entire industry that's adversarial to them. SEO companies are spending billions of dollars and countless man-hours with the explicit goal of making search worse. The fact that they've gotten even better tools in the form of GenAI for manipulating search hasn't helped.
Xirgil··on SpaceX discloses cause of Starship anomalies as it clears an FAA hurdle
It means that private industry is doing a better job of allocating funding and meeting demand.
Xirgil··on Google to pause Gemini image generation of people after issues
So what would you call the social movement and ideology being described?
Xirgil··on Google to pause Gemini image generation of people after issues
The movie?? Just watch it, it's Ken Watanabe's character Katsumoto. The main character/protagonist of a movie and the titular character are not always the same.
Xirgil··on Google to pause Gemini image generation of people after issues
"Mind Virus" is loaded and inflammatory, but "woke" is the result of people noticing a large and highly influential social movement that refuses to name itself and chafes against any outside attempt to do so. You can't have a movement that important without a name.

Maintaining continuity of appearance, motion, etc does not seem like a "just" to me

Digital Westworld
Xirgil··on Sora: Creating video from text
I suspect it's less about being puritanical about violence and nudity in and of themself, and more a blanket ban to make up for the inability to prevent the generation of actually controversial material (nude images of pop stars, violence against politicians, hate speech)
Xirgil··on Sora: Creating video from text
What happens when anyone can put on their AR headset and have AI diagnose and walk them through exactly how to fix their plumbing problems?
Xirgil··on Sora: Creating video from text
It's called anchoring
Xirgil··on Commercial property deals in the US are starting to pick up at deep discounts
I would look to the signage in Tokyo for an example. The buildings have columns of signs listing the floor each one is on. Definitely not what we're used to which might hurt adoption at first, but it works for them.
Xirgil··on The likelihood of unilateral solar geoengineering
Sulphates have a cooling effect and drop out of the atmosphere. There was recently a push to remove the sulphate content in the fuel used for cargo ships from 3.5% to 0.5%, and as the sulphates dropped out of the upper atmosphere the water in the Atlantic warmed significantly. Turns out we had been unintentionally doing geoengineering that was counteracting some of the affects of climate change. The downside is that sulphates are deleterious to human health, causing asthma.

It's possible a sufficiently motivated billionaire or even a somewhat wealthy millionaire could independently finance a project to inject sulphates into the upper atmosphere in international waters and have a measurable impact on global warming, although people with respiratory issues might not be too happy.

Xirgil··on Abandoned villages of Hong Kong
Given that fertility is negatively correlated with income until you start reaching very high levels, economic disaster might actually boost fertility. That's not to say it's entirely an economic issue, it's also social, but it's definitely a factor.
Xirgil··on Someone stole a Jasper radio station’s 200-foot tower, owner says
Criminals don't make sense to you because you're trying to explain their behavior with your own thought process. You're likely much smarter than they are, with a better understanding of risk vs reward and lower impulsivity. Also you can't explain criminal behavior with purely financial motivations. Car thieves are not making $33k per car. A lot of them don't even sell them, just steal what's inside and use them for a joy ride (ask me how I know). Lots of petty criminals and drug dealers are not making very much money, especially for the level of risk. But compared to a traditional job it's much less restrictive, fun and exciting, lets you hang out with your friends most of the time, and has a lot more social clout with their peers than traditional employment.
Xirgil··on Toyota to invest $1.3B in Kentucky factory to build battery packs and new EV
Yeah, those poor towns should just remain poor, definitely don't spend a billion dollars there, that would be terrible for them.

We need more anti-anticompetitive action. Why should NVidia and those who use their products be punished because their competitors have not stepped up to the plate?
