XaspR8d··on Ask HN: Which non-technology book has influenced you the most and why?
Interesting suggestion! I really cannot stand this book, but I appreciate all of the things you've gleaned from it and I'm glad it's had a positive impact on people.

I actually really like Pirsig's ideas about quality and balancing analytical and emotional worldviews, but the writing style drives me nuts and feels like I'm grading a weak Philosophy 101 essay.

XaspR8d··on 10,000 Games projects have been successfully funded on Kickstarter
RE: Mottaini - always-pray is definitely annoying, but I don't think it holds up with deeper strategy. If your opponent is doing it vehemently, remember that you now have absolute control over what actions they take, and find a route that you can exploit much better than them. It's a very strange game, and one that will not match everyone's tastes, but I definitely think it falls right in line with Chudyk's other work and was a great value.
XaspR8d··on Show HN: Every Day Is Pi Day
I think that family of ClearType bugs persisted for like 5 years on Chrome for Windows (I only noticed it fixed last fall?) so I'm not surprised people were attempting extreme fixes. The text looked really bad.

EDIT: Sibling post suggests it was fixed in 2014. I wonder what was wrong with my home laptop then, haha...

XaspR8d··on Emoji.length == 2
If anything, their adaptability gives me confidence. They have little power to stop vendors from creating new emojis that are morphologically distinct from existing ones, so they might as well wrangle them into a standard.
XaspR8d··on “Alcohol and caffeine created civilization”
Is this a testable claim? Were, say, sheep progenitors easier to domesticate than ibexes or antelope or okapi?
XaspR8d··on Poachers kill rhino for his horn at French zoo
Well, we just haven't found a good control planet yet.
XaspR8d··on What the death of the CRT display technology means for classic arcade machines
Relatedly, if anyone hasn't read it, Kyle Pittman has a lovely rundown of his attempts at emulating various CRT-effects digitally during development of the indie game Super Win the Game: http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/KylePittman/20150420/241442/C...

Of course, most people (Pittman included) felt that configuring the visually emulation too accurately was annoying and/or unbelievable. :P

XaspR8d··on I've been a software engineer for 10 years and I can't do interview questions
Yeah I was in a similar position with a lot of code work from a startup that crashed (wasn't the founder, but 1st technical team member, and the founder ended up being useless as a reference) that people refused to look at.

One thing I unfortunately take from that period is a bitterness toward people who complain about whiteboard interviews, because I was never even given a chance to do coding problems. I understand that many of the complaints are rational (especially when the interview skills are totally misaligned from the on-the-job skills), but since I was stuck before that phase, I'd emotionally rather have less early filtering and more code-based interviews.

If I actually came into a position of hiring power, I'd take time to reevaluate and separate myself from the question, but that's the instinctual response my history has brought me to.

XaspR8d··on Japan's Universities Are Failing
Still paywalled?
XaspR8d··on ‘I must fundamentally change and grow up’: Uber CEO Travis Kalanick’s apology
Seeing this apology (that I didn't think was necessary) just made me more angry about their failure to acknowledge anything is wrong with their culture of harassment.

Obviously they can't actually acknowledge the harassment issues because it would put them in a terrible place legally, but it's funny how that omission makes this such a negative PR move in my mind. Better to say nothing at all and just keep pretending they can unicorn-horn themselves through the rough patches?

XaspR8d··on Hacking Slack using postMessage and WebSocket-reconnect to steal your token
It's not canonicalization, it's extracting the hostname from the origin (which contains the protocol and port info as well) without implementing your own URL parsing.
XaspR8d··on Announcing TypeScript 2.2
For passersby who were confused like I was: IntelliJ Community Edition has absolutely no support for Javascript or Typescript, which is not noted clearly in the help docs. You apparently need Ultimate Edition to get it.

I was real excited that I could finally use the same IDE for front-end and back-end too... :/

XaspR8d··on Elon Musk is boring a tunnel to skirt gridlock
Yeah, pursuing a culture shift that discourages pointlessly-standardized working hours and encourages remote work when possible might even have a tangible effect on traffic.

That said traffic is often one of those unfortunate predator-prey type dynamics, where congestion being reduced often encourages more folks to drive until the system returns to an (unfortunate) equilibrium...

XaspR8d··on Can I Talk to that William Fellow? He was so Helpful (2009)
It was also a very useful employee relations move: Bill wasn't "above" the task of a customer support call and demonstrated respect for the support workers by performing his best in their role, even if very temporarily.
XaspR8d··on Designing a Business Card in LaTeX
I honestly miss LaTeX a lot, especially the quality of documents I could create with it (when I was in academia). Hopefully I'll get a chance to do a white paper later this year and bust out the skills.

But I am totally willing to accept my role as an outlier... I even wrote a small TeX package at one point, so I'm aware it's not a "fun" system. :P

XaspR8d··on Super Bowl Delivers Thrills, but No Ratings Record
Anecdotally, I feel football is gradually losing ground among younger generations. My sports-watching-est friends seem to be less and less devoted to football in particular and more interested in other, more niche sports. Even those strongly allegiant to football are less insistent on catching many individual games real-time as they are staying informed about the league overall and watching highlights or stream or DVR when they can.
XaspR8d··on Show HN: Simple image resizing/optimization service
Well "correct" in the case of linear vs non-linear luminance is pretty much exactly about perception (or at the very least, working to prevent perception differences further down the pipeline), even if it is a somewhat minor effect.

"The Importance of Being Linear"[1] which just came up on HN a few days ago, discusses some issues with non-linearity, specifically in the context of 3D rendering.

XaspR8d··on Speak IPA – Text to Speech for International Phonetic Alphabet
It's amazing for how useful IPA is (at least at providing an reasonable fidelity intermediate form between other, more-accurate representations) how few FOSS projects I've seen use it.

Really what I'm saying is I'd like to see someone build an automated pun-discovery tool.

XaspR8d··on France bans unlimited sugary drink refills
10 refills? Yeah even here in the states among the heaviest of soda drinkers that seems like a useless limit...
XaspR8d··on Meet the woman who put 50M stolen articles online (2016)
Yes, she runs Sci-Hub. Sci-Hub eventually partnered with LibGen to help host files and reduce Sci-Hub's dependence on donated logins. (Previously all documents were accessed from their "real" journal/repository portals using credentials contributed by sympathetic academics.)
XaspR8d··on Meet the woman who put 50M stolen articles online (2016)
I think she has been publicly linked to Sci-Hub for a long time; by the time of the Elsevier lawsuit they knew to contact her directly.[1] Considering that she's already hiding from extradition, a little more PR probably doesn't hurt?

XaspR8d··on Save the Date by Google
Yeah I tried that too! It bucks the trend and just wants you to enter the name.
XaspR8d··on Save the Date by Google
You're overthinking it.

The number of spaces in each row matches the lengths of something you've seen.

XaspR8d··on Save the Date by Google
Answer to last puzzle:

You can put the names of the countries into the spaces on the board and add/subtract from letter values appropriately.

This gives you:

L IN E

THEATRE

SHO RE

AM P H I

(Shoreline Amphitheatre)

5/17, 5/18, 5/19 are the dates of Google I/O, at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA.

EDIT: Haha, I guess we're faster than they expected or this leaked early, since completing it links you to https://events.google.com/io/ which just says "check back soon".

XaspR8d··on Save the Date by Google
Ahh thanks. Any idea on the next one? :P

EDIT: Nevermind 3 should be easy for most HNers. Wrote that before I even saw it.

XaspR8d··on Save the Date by Google
I was thinking maybe it was part of a chip bag. Then you could run that fancy subpixel-motion sound extraction algorithm on it pretty easily (fitting with "See What Cannot Be Heard").

But the timecodes are probably a more likely thing...

XaspR8d··on The White House is adding four ‘Skype Seats’ to its press briefings
I don't think such preferences are abnormal, not at all. It is a natural desire for an administration to want softball questions.

However I don't think most administrations would attempt to achieve them by disrupting the press corps. That claim probably can't be tested or evaluated fairly, partially because it's a fairly novel action, and partially because it's a complex hypothetical. I must admit it is just my political leanings driving me to this conclusion.

I guess another (unfair) way to look at is: I would rather have someone appear not to attempt to manipulate public opinion, regardless of if they actually are, because when you are at that level of power, I at least want you to ave your act together enough to keep halfway-decent PR. Thus the fact that it appears to me that they are making such weak attempts to manipulate says something, independent of the ethics of the action itself.

XaspR8d··on The White House is adding four ‘Skype Seats’ to its press briefings
Under another administration I would be hopeful, but the Trump administration appears openly interested in choosing organizations that only ask the kind of questions they want to answer.
XaspR8d··on How Bullshitters Not Just Survive But Thrive (2016)
Is this a notable photograph for visual elicitation? I saw a cow immediately so I thought the references were some weird sarcastic humor...

(Not bragging about recognition by any means. Grew up in dairy country so I probably see too many cows in things overall!)

XaspR8d··on Make Firefox support moz://a
Yep, though most of them are "provisional", which means it isn't a formal or permanent definition. Here's the full list:
