X0nic··on A mechanic offered a reason why no one wants to work in the industry
OMG yes. So many people miss this, and many companies don't understand this.
X0nic··on Ladybird passes the Apple 90% threshold on web-platform-tests
I wonder how hard the last 10% will be? If its a typical software project its going to be 90% more effort for the last 10%.
X0nic··on Shopify, pulling strings at Ruby Central, forces Bundler and RubyGems takeover
The "what" seems to be purely a reaction to this article DHH posted: https://world.hey.com/dhh/as-i-remember-london-e7d38e64

Apparently, the reason is having an incorrect opinion.

X0nic··on GPT-4 LLM simulates people well enough to replicate social science experiments
Same for me. I had no idea what was being asked.
X0nic··on Cryptocurrencies’ dream of escaping the global financial system is crumbling
Stablecoins / Central Bank Digital Currencies are equivalent to AOL vs the Internet.

Why would I hold stablecoins that are getting devalued at a MINUMUM of 2% per year over Bitcoin that has gone up in value on average at over 200% a year for the last 10 years. Not to mention other cryptos.

X0nic··on Barclays stops UK clients from sending funds to Binance
Not crypto, not your money.
X0nic··on 80/20 is the new Half-Ass
I read 20% of the article. Now I don't need to read the rest, right?
X0nic··on YouTube bans coronavirus-related content that directly contradicts WHO advice
I guess that means they will have to ban all content mentioning Taiwan?
X0nic··on A candidate received over 4K extra votes due to an ionizing particle from Sun
Not a very convincing article to me. Why do they think it was a cosmic ray vs a simple bug? Seems to me the simpler answer is the case here.

It is also troubling they found the error accidentally. Seems they didn't do even minimal validation of the results, such as applying Benford's Law. https://iaonline.theiia.org/putting-benfords-law-to-work

X0nic··on 2016’s Business Winners and Losers
Do you really browse without JS turned on? Seems like a hopeless cause now adays.
X0nic··on When should I use Node for back end?
I prefer Rails or Elixir, but golang is a solid choice.
X0nic··on Configuration (mis)management or why I hate puppet, ansible, salt, etc.
I feel this sentiment all the time from devs. "Why are you making me work harder?"

As apps get larger, we as devs have to stop and think about how things are going to run in production. We have too often made the ops team's life worse, because we would rather just hardcode stuff.

Yes, these tools make it harder FOR DEVS, but now the Ops team has a hope of actually managing the platform.

X0nic··on C14 – Cheap, secure long term cloud storage
I think for data integrity alone, you wouldn't want to upload files that large. Just create an archive that splits the file up.
X0nic··on The Immutability of Math and How Almost Everything Else Will Pass
Yes I agree, math is extremely important for people who would like to become a Computer Scientist or Computer Engineer. The vast majority of people learning programming in school are not going to do that. Making these people learn these topics and possibly turning off potential students is counter productive. Many people could gain a lot by just having basic programming skills, and those people are scared off by any mention of the word math.
X0nic··on ES6 is beautiful
I agree this is great stuff for JS, but it is nothing new if you have been using a modern dynamic language like ruby.
X0nic··on Report: Apple orders 15 million iPhone 5s
Doubt its an iPhone 5. iPhone 4S seems more likely.
X0nic··on IPhone Flash prototype got 30 min battery life
Yes it would probably be safe to assume that 30mins is a little bit of an exaggeration. It doesnt make it any less true that most flash content are ads, and i dont want ads draining my battery even a little.
X0nic··on IPhone Flash prototype got 30 min battery life
For 90% of the sites that I visit, I would prefer no flash. Not to mention the battery, last thing I want is flash chewing through my battery for flash that I dont even want to see. I wouldnt mind the ability to click on a flash movie that isnt youtube, and have it launch a player.
X0nic··on Schwarzenegger gives California Legislature a Hidden Finger
Does anyone know what Schwarzenegger's objections to this bill were?
X0nic··on Why I Would Hire Game Developers for my Startup
This is like comparing apples to oranges. Game development is a more specialized industry. This is like comparing OS developers to VB developers. More people do web development, its easier to get into and therefore a lot more people just plain suck. Anyone who is in game development is probably already an above average developer, while an average web developer is, well average.
X0nic··on Time to tackle the real evil: too much debt
Looks like a good article, too bad its being held hostage behind a wall.
X0nic··on At 14, is PHP Finally Growing Up?
I wouldnt say its growing up, more like jumping the shark.
