WrtCdEvrydy··on Avoiding food waste confusion
> Having my French girlfriend meet my Slovenian grandparents was very entertaining. They kept feeding her and she kept cleaning the plate and it was like a battle of who gives up first. I almost died laughing

South Korean Professor invites 4 hispanics PhD students to his house. His wife keeps putting food on our plate, we keep slamming it down. It's a great disrespect to leave anything on the plate... while it's a great disrespect to get an empty plate (it means you didn't feed your guests).

I had to pull him aside and be like "get her to stop, please"

WrtCdEvrydy··on Coinbase CEO: we're preparing to go to court with the U.S. SEC
I'm surprised homes are not qualified as "securities" at this point.

Home prices must go up :D

no pre-mine I believe.

WrtCdEvrydy··on Cash App founder Bob Lee stabbed to death after argument about suspect's sister
> passerby's walking past Lee gasping his last breaths for help is indicative of the civil rot happening in our cities.

This happens all the time... wanna see something fun, walk around your city saying "hi" to everyone and see how often you get a "hi" back.

WrtCdEvrydy··on Auto-GPT Unmasked: The Hype and Hard Truths of Its Production Pitfalls
Didn't know but yeah, was pointing out how many of my friends had "predicted" the sudden climb of Bitcoin because of "inverted curves" or some other magic.
WrtCdEvrydy··on Auto-GPT Unmasked: The Hype and Hard Truths of Its Production Pitfalls
Speaking of $16,000 Bitcoins... I think this might be the wave that pushes you over $100k each. I have a github repo that says so, with math.
WrtCdEvrydy··on Car alarms and smoke alarms: tradeoff between sensitivity and specificity (2012)
The one that pushes buttons is the alarms that have no docs attached so when they blow off at 2AM, they just get muted until someone comes in and complains at 6AM.
WrtCdEvrydy··on Is 3D printer company Bambu Lab trying to patent everything about 3D printing?
> A lot of their employees come from DJI, which is equally locked down.

Why does this suddenly make sense with the proprietary hotends and other magic...

WrtCdEvrydy··on China plans to ban exports of rare earth magnet tech
This has been a trope in scifi since years.

I remember the original Black Ops 2 video game campaign literally built on microprocessors all coming from China.

WrtCdEvrydy··on Show HN: Promptr, let GPT operate on your codebase and other useful goodies
This is good for security overall... think about it, if we sent all of our stuff to the NSA, they would find security bugs and fix them for us.
WrtCdEvrydy··on The effects of wealth on (Swedish) marriage and fertility
> like an oddly woman-hostile take

Noone cared about alimony until women started having to pay and now there's suddenly a movement to remove it.

WrtCdEvrydy··on I don’t want a new phone, but I’m probably buying one
I didn't say it was easy. It's made a pain in the ass by Apple themselves.

However, it's not realistic to say "it's impossible"

WrtCdEvrydy··on Binance sees $2B in outflows as troubles compound
> There have been plenty of cases in trad-fi where a positive audit was followed by collapse, and sometimes evidence of criminality.

I mean, audits should trigger a collapse... I assume once people inside realize the audit passed, they'll be more blatant and likely to blow up their scheme.

WrtCdEvrydy··on Show HN: PoachMe.dev, Reclaim Your Time
I'm taking notes on this one but I'm guessing it's just not pushing a new page as you navigate.
WrtCdEvrydy··on Show HN: PoachMe.dev, Reclaim Your Time
> because you are reducing the pool of people who will talk to you. I think I would rather find out about more opportunities in total. A good way to save time is only deal with recruiters who will mostly converse by email and send through a job spec.

The one benefit we did not anticipate was the "honesty". A lot of recruiters will say "oh, we don't have pay bracket info"... yet as soon as $100 is on the line, we find out that it's "here's the pay bracket info just so we don't waste each other's time". Honestly, if I told you to ask for $100 upfront in order to get the full job details from someone, you would think I'm pranking you.

Edit: On the "who will mostly converse by email and send through a job spec.", we also found a lot of recruiters will downgrade from "it's a quick call" to "here's an email" as soon as that "quick call" is a "quick paid call"

WrtCdEvrydy··on I don’t want a new phone, but I’m probably buying one
You can install any version using AppStore++ which is available when you jailbreak. The older the phone, the easier the jailbreak.

You can always download the app version that works for your phone using the Purchased section... the only real phone I have yet to be able to do this for is the iPhone 4 which did not have 64-bit apps.

My iPhone 5S and beyond all have access to every app that is available for 64-bit OS. It's often an older version of the app but that's kinda the Apple burden.

WrtCdEvrydy··on Apple doesn’t want you developing hobby apps
Apple is extremely hostile to anything that isn't "get the app from the App Store".

Hell, deploying your app to your phone without a developer license used to require that $99...

WrtCdEvrydy··on Junkyard computing – repurposing discarded smartphones to minimize pollution
> I can't install any apps from the "App Store" but it still does what I want most.

Apple has made this such a hassle... if you actually install an app on your new iPhone 10... you can go over to your "Purchased" on your iPhone 5 and install the version that runs on it (if it exists). However if you go on the iPhone 5 to the app store, they just say "so sorry, not supported" and it is the biggest slap you can give someone to remind them the product they paid for is not owned by them.

WrtCdEvrydy··on The Samsung Galaxy S23’s bloated Android build somehow uses 60GB of storage
Pixel 4A has one. I didn't even notice the Nothing Phone didn't until you just pointed it out.
WrtCdEvrydy··on The Samsung Galaxy S23’s bloated Android build somehow uses 60GB of storage
This is why I love the Nothing Phone and my older Pixel 4A.

Even my Moto G7 came with a relatively unbothered experience.

WrtCdEvrydy··on How much can you get out of a $4 VPS?
> For 5 EUR / month you can also get a dedicated server (not a VPS) from OVH.

Where?

WrtCdEvrydy··on Near-miss between FedEx and Southwest flights in Austin
I think ATC is overworked and there hasn't been as many advances in technology in that sector as well as under training for years. Honestly surprising that planes don't collide more often, the world around us relies on airplanes for logistics but everything about the entire aviation field from pilots to mechanics is a battle of never having enough people.
WrtCdEvrydy··on AWS Tape Gateway

WrtCdEvrydy··on Companies save billions of dollars by giving employees fake “manager” titles

WrtCdEvrydy··on AWS Tape Gateway
> Once you have massive data in AWS there is no efficient and affordable solution to move that data back out; you are locked in forever subject to whatever future terms Amazon may chose to impose.

You can have your shit packed into a snowball and shipped to you.

WrtCdEvrydy··on Starting February 9, we will no longer support free access to the Twitter API
This makes sense... let's switch lightweight mostly-text API usage to full page scraping... this will cost Twitter a lot.
WrtCdEvrydy··on An obituary for the man who saved North Carolina from Nuclear Disaster
My former professor told me about going to the NSA during the cuban missile crisis for his interview.

Apparently "a cuban candidate" became "a cuban spy" by the time he had sat down to wait by the door for his escort.

WrtCdEvrydy··on YouTube Offers College Credits from Watching Videos
... by 2009, FIU, a public university was charging 150 per credit, and a normal class was 3 credits. Also, they would add bullshit remote learning fees, parking fees and gym fees that most students would never make use of.
