Wonnk13··on Command-line Tools can be 235x Faster than your Hadoop Cluster (2014)
One of my favorite posts. I'll always upvote this. Of course there are use cases one or two standard deviations outside the mean that require truly massive distributed architectures, but not your shitty csv / json files.

Reflecting on a decade in the industry I can say cut, sort, uniq, xargs, sed, etc etc have taken me farther than any programming language or ec2 instance.

Wonnk13··on When America first dropped acid
Yes exactly. Basically trying to replicate some of the clinical trials in my bedroom lol.
Wonnk13··on When America first dropped acid
So I'm a stage 4 cancer patient and now there's a real fire under my ass to do a heroic dose. I talked to my therapist about it and he was like yea, here's this website where you can order some chocolate bars. My jaw hit the floor. I thought he was referencing the darkweb, but nope just a typical site in Canada I think.

I'm still incredibly new to it all and would love to grow my own at one point. I'd also love to know where ahem folks are sourcing their stuff.

Wonnk13··on When America first dropped acid
I think the name of the book is Poisoner in Chief, it's a great history of how Gottlieb ran that program and its impacts on society.
Wonnk13··on New cancer drug kinder than chemotherapy
Yea me too, I just didn't want to assume. that's awesome, maybe i'll ask about that when i come for my next chemo appt. :)
Wonnk13··on Mourning Google
Tangential to the article, when I onboarded in 2017 it felt like showing up to a house party at 3am. You had missed all the action, everyone was now in some kind of stupor half awake half asleep. I think it was literal weeks after they moved "Don't be Evil" to the bottom of the employee handbook or whatever. I didn't make it to three years. I met some incredible individuals, but the org as a whole as I experienced it (acknowledging I'm only one of nearly 150k employees) was basically IBM with better food.
Wonnk13··on New cancer drug kinder than chemotherapy
MGH being Mass General Hospital or something else? I only ask because I'm a colon cancer patient at Mass General.
Wonnk13··on Cancer Is Striking More Young People, and Doctors Are Alarmed and Baffled
35 y/o male with stage 4 colon cancer here. You can creep my past comments on this site. Hopefully I can get down to MDAnderson for some clinical trials later this year.

I don't buy the "we're just better at detecting it" argument entirely. No millenial is getting routine colonoscopies. I don't know what the solutions are, but I hope they come pretty fucking quick.

Wonnk13··on Ask HN: Best books you read in 2023
I agree somewhat that there are repetitive themes in the Creative Act, but I still found it incredible. I approached it as a series of Zen Koans. You can just pick up the book and start almost anywhere. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone.
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2023 and recommend for 2024?
What if any are the differences between Advaita and something like Dzogchen meditation? I've really enjoyed Sam Haris's take on non duality.
Wonnk13··on Getting Started with Axum – Rust's Most Popular Web Framework
This isn't trolling, it's my genuine ignorance- I thought Actix was the goto web framework for Rust? I don't do a whole lot of Rust and when I do it isn't http router type work so I'm out of the loop here.
Wonnk13··on Good old fashion ML is dying
I must be stuck in 2015 still. I thought it would be about the death of SVMs, or ensemble models XGBoost or something. I'm still catching up on RNNs, GANs and god knows what else lol.
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: What programming language do we use if IQ of whole humanity reach 160?
So is there an implicit assumption that some languages are only appropriate for geniuses? That Javascript as the such only exist because of low IQ individuals?

I want to assume good intent, but the basis of the question is mildly offensive, no?

Wonnk13··on Olive oil soars, and thieves go after century-old trees in the Mediterranean
Wow, my girlfriend and I visited Crete earlier this year and took a tour of an old olive grove. They warned us prices were going to jump up, but this is bonkers.
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: How to break into sales engineer role?
I'm an introvert, but have always been "that guy" willing to go onsite (pre-covid) and/or get on calls with clients. My first job out of grad school was a data scientist at the peak of the hype in 2012. More time on calls and less time coding over a year or two. That turned into a post-sales implementation engineer role where I was basically professional services. At my current company they cancelled the post sales program and rolled us all into sales engineering.

I like the tech and meeting different people / use cases. I don't like the AEs and the vomit of acronyms and jargon that comes with the sales side of the house, although I guess you could say Salesforce is no worse than Jira/wikis that developers are familiar with.

Overall I enjoy it; I was a mediocre software engineer and the competition for SWE roles is damn tough. There are fewer tech folks who are ok with being on client calls for most of the day so it's a good niche. That said I do feel like my skills have atrophied a bit and there's not a clear path for growth. I'd love if someone who has been doing this for 20+ years could chime in :)

Wonnk13··on National Film Board of Canada
Took me way too long to learn they weren’t Canadian lol. Fantastic that they’re so well known now.
Wonnk13··on A single weekly bout of exercise may reduce cardiovascular mortality (2006)
100% this. I've posted on HN a few times about my bouts with cancer. I'm only 35 so symptoms were constantly dismissed as something else. Only because I noticed the drop in my workouts did I have the motivation to really push my PCP for more testing. Knowing your body and being an advocate for yourself are so critical in a "if your arm hurts stop moving your arm" medical culture.
Wonnk13··on Show HN: Not My Cows – Save your cows. Blast the meteors. Giddy up
holy cow (pun kinda intended) I don't do frontend work and was expecting the source to be some giant React / whatever project. It's mostly all in a simple index.html that even I can mostly grok. cool.
Wonnk13··on Postgres Language Server
would love to take this for a spin in Emacs. I always lsp support for sql was lacking.
Wonnk13··on 'Cancer-killing pill' is now being tested on humans
Wrapping up round 9 of Folfirinox chemo protocol, hopefully the last round of my life. This shit is nasty. I hope in the coming decades we can look back and realize how barbaric it is to poison your body and hope for the best.

However, this is just a puff piece, not news at all. Not a single citation etc etc. Cancers are hard, I just hope if I ever have children the science will have advanced beyond what I'm dealing with.

Wonnk13··on Public US hearing on UFOs [video]
>aliens exist - they have recovered technology - they have recovered bodies - there's a shadow government of people approving access to information on a higher level than the government

wait... someone testified _under oath_ that these things exist? Either they're lying/exaggerating, or they just announced the single largest discovery in the history of the human race? I feel stupid just typing this...

Wonnk13··on Ask HN: Looking for new hobbies to relax, grow or make friends, any ideas?
Depends on where you are located, but is there a community garden near you? I’ve lived in several cities and while most of my hobbies are pretty intense, gardening allows me to zen the fuck out and meet people outside of tech. Watching plants grow is such a tangible experience that I can’t get with software.

Someone else mentioned woodworking- that’s not my cup of coffee, but maker spaces are a great way to meet people and build something.

The last thing I can think of is your local library or community college- they may have courses for adults in a low pressure environment.

Godspeed :)

Wonnk13··on Cormac McCarthy has died
RIP. Blood Meridian deserves a Nobel imho.

“War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner.”

Wonnk13··on In praise of blowing up your life
Thanks for replying- I completely agree. Which writing is that quote from and/or any goods tips for where to start with Seneca for someone who didn't study the classics in college?
Wonnk13··on In praise of blowing up your life
I don't entirely disagree, but the first thing that this article brought to mind is the old cliche "wherever you go, there you are". I'm 34, lots of ex girlfriends and lots of past cities. There's a fine line between breaking out of the status quo hamster wheel and running away from your baggage.

Moving cities, or relationships, or jobs isn't worth as much if you aren't simultaneously working on yourself

Wonnk13··on Scientists need to get high
I completely agree, but this stuff is still illegal in most of the United States. What am I supposed to do, just walk up to someone "how do you do fellow kids, I'd like to purchase one LSD".
Wonnk13··on New work helps to explain how chronic stress can inflame the gut
It's nothing more than an anecdote, but I can't help but correlate the fact that I was diagnosed with colon cancer in late 2016. I joined as one of the first 12 employees of a startup a few years earlier and I can absolutely say with respect to stress and nutrition it was one of the roughest periods of my life.
Wonnk13··on Exercise increases number of immune cells in cancer patients
I was on Folfirinnox + Avastin. 2 week cycle with three actual days of chemo, five shitty days and then a recovery week. Exercise was really dictated by my port surgically put into my right peck. After about four weeks I could deadlift, squat, all the compound lifts + run, bike, swim if I had the energy.

The surgery was supposed to be VATs, but the tumor was so large it turned into a general thoracotomy. It's fucking brutal. Easily the hardest thing i've had to do in life so far. But I'll get through it because there's no other choice. Forward. :)

Wonnk13··on Exercise increases number of immune cells in cancer patients
34 year old triathlete here: colon cancer spread from my colon to my lung. That said, I do think continuing to do some amount of exercise during chemo definitely helped me recover, if not just stay sane mentally.

I'm about to have surgery to remove part of the lung and tumor and my surgeon/oncology team is making me wear a fitbit for three months to study my recovery.

Wonnk13··on Ask HN: How do I cope with stress and axiety caused by big change in life?
It sounds incredibly trite and cliche, but you have to make peace with the fact that the only constant in life is change. Everything is always changing. For a year or two I never found meditation to be anything other than silly breathing exercises, but about a year ago I downloaded the Waking Up app and it has literally changed my life. Maybe give it a try?
