WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Ask HN: I'm 40 and feel my mental ability declining. Programming seems harder.
For me the checklist would be:

1. Sleep quality 2. Nutrition quality 3. Exercise 4. Lifestyle

First make sure that all the above is in check.

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on YouTube confirms that it has removed the “sort by oldest/newest” option
At some point the search filed stooped searching. It is something like:

* Here is the most popular results that are slightly relevant to your query. E.g. African war lord will pull up a gamer playing pranks on other gamers.

* Then, we give up. Here is some unrelated videos we hope will distract you searching what you are looking for.

Is this what tech should look like? Search has been purposely broken.

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on The rush to mine lithium could dry up the high Andes
You make an interesting point but the same problem is now on the hands of the political regime(hopefully a wide segment of society) to decide the value of things.
WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on The rush to mine lithium could dry up the high Andes
What about taking the ore to sea level and doing the process there. It's downhill.

This is the greatest flaw in markets. It's said that markets compute the right values for trade goods. But it should be qualified to: Value now (or in the short term).

In any specific moment value has certain dispersion due to multiple factors. The uncertainty of value in the future is huge because those factors compound.

My point is that I believe markes only work in the short term. For long term planning (~one huamn lifetime, a civilization life time) markets don't work.

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Apple previews Lockdown Mode
But should apple we liable when they, or any other organization making such claims, inevitably fail to protect their users?

I think their should.

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Ask HN: How to talk with logical flow and coherence at interviews?
I found reading books, like novels, helps to build the necessary skills to chain complex ideas together in "real time".
WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Ask HN: Do you rewrite pull requests?
This seems like the more ethical approach with regards to giving credit to the original author.

I've seen projects (on GitHub, won't call them out) get bad reputation when the maintainer implements code previously submitted as a PR.

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Vijayanagara – The Last Emperors of South India [audio]
I'm no historian, but I really enjoy this podcast.

I feel a bit of guilt knowing that a whole civilization had to fall to produce each of these episodes. This is really expensive to produce!

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Denuvo-Protected Games Rendered Unplayable After Domain Expires
DRM doesn't work in games, go to a torrent site to see all the failed attempts.

    1. It costs money
    2. It makes the product worse(slower, less portable,etc...) for your _ paying _ customers.
    3. It doesn't work if the game is good.
Just add a copyright note on the corner and make sure to have good distribution.
WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Overhead of Returning Optional Values in Java and Rust
I don't think that's the best way to use Optional in java. In particular the use of isPresent & get kind of defeats the purpose. Should be something along the lines :

   ...
   sum = 0
   opt = getOptional(n)
   sum = sum + opt.orElse(0);
   ...
Also maybe use something like OptionalInt (but for long).
WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Show HN: A world map of 24x365 average temperature “fingerprints”
That dashboard was gold. RIP.
WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
One of The Osterholm update's video (a podcast) was censored for spreading "misinformation".

I hope they can survive this.

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on M4 as a templating language (2020)
M4 syntax looks that way because it has to work for arbitrary text files.

Quotes can be redefined to an arbitrary string

   changequote(`[[[', `]]]')
And some editor give you syntax highlighting.
WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Resident Evil Village crack completely fixes its stuttering issues
1. Paying customers get worse experience than pirates. 2. Your software lifespan is reduced. (Worst if you use 3rd party DRM). 3. The company pay for something that 99% of the time doesn't work.

So I see the intent, but not the logic

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Ask HN: Is this the most quoted quote on HN?
I believe I understand your point, but there these options (as I see things):

1. There is little correlation, but there is actual causation (e.g: a cricle)

2. There is correlation, but it turns out to be a fluke later during validation.

So, yes. It suggests but in both cases I'd rather continue checkcing

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Resident Evil Village crack completely fixes its stuttering issues
DRM: make your product worse for your paying customers.
WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Ask HN: Is this the most quoted quote on HN?
When someone mentions correlation, they imply a linear relation between the correlated variables and a range of values for which that relation is valid.

Only when that model is further validated correlation suggests causation.

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Pocketlang
Sounds like https://dhall-lang.org/
WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Replit now supports every programming language in Nix
Does this applies to Haskell? I tried a project that pulled the lens library and it exceeded the memory/time limitations (in 2019)
WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Piano teacher gets copyright claim for Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata [video]
This should bear consequences for YouTube as they have enabled such brutal treatment on this woman and many others.
WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on “They introduce kernel bugs on purpose”
I agree with the sentiment. For a project of this magnitude maybe it comes to develop some kind of static analysis along with refactoring the code to make the former possible.

As per the attack surface described in the paper (section IV). Because (III, the acceptance process) is a manpower issue.

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Ask HN: Literature on crisis response?

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Organizations announced for Google Summer of Code 2021
I know a community that held the event after being rejected to ensure that the "processes" where still in place for the future. They are now on the list again (haskell).

I think GNU should do something similar.

Ask HN: what are some OS projects that have a process to recruit help? Should OS projects have a "survival strategy"?

See for example R: https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/organizations/5111129224...

Is clearer than Sagemath (IMHO): https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/organizations/6362857865...

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Accused murderer wins right to check source code of DNA testing kit
True. But I believe this is a case where correctness and clarity are the paramount concerns.

There should be a public reference implantation of these methods if they are going to be used in court.

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Periodical cicada Brood X will emerge in 15 states in 2021
Thia avoids collisions as long as the process takes less than one unit of time to complete.

If not, processes that take more than one unit will overlap eventually[0]

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Dance is superior to repetitive physical exercise for brain plasticity (2018)
As a data analyst, I once took an introductory class to modern dance. 5 sessions during one week. I though I was trained, I did calystecnics and yoga.

The class included "floor work" similar but no limited to [1].

It was hard. I received a lot of feed back from the instructor, but of course I didn't achieve that amount of grace.

Very worth trying if you want to experience learning something new and challenging.

Incidentally, this is one area where there are many more females than males. 2¢.

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Mozilla project exposes YouTube's recommendation 'bubbles'
I had similar results following similar practices. I distinguish between stuff I want the algorithm to recommend and stuff that I only want to consume "on-demand" (that is when ever I search for it).

The second category covers topics with lots of content so It would overwhelm the other interests.

YouTube some times asks me how do I feel about my recommendations and some times all of them are interesting. But I can't watch them all (maybe I should add them to watch later, to tell the algorithm that I care)

The turning point was when they allowed us to tell the algorithm which videos were not relevant.

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Firefox Picture-in-Picture
This is a nice feature.

> play alongside while you go about your business on

> other tabs or do things outside of Firefox.

Do we need to watch video while we go about our business? You better finish your business or the video. Which leaves me thinking: this is kind of bloat.

WmyEE0UsWAwC2i··on Scientists move to strip offensive names from journals, prizes, and more
This is the real solution to these kind of problems.

It is OK to honor the people who first worked on a problem like the Gaussian Distribution, Hessian, etc... But nowadays, with so many people working on science and so many records, it time to find a new way to honor those people.
