Winterflow3r··on Ask HN: EU devs who moved to the States for work, has it been worth it?
Are you planning to move to a major metro-region in the EU or somewhere more quiet?
Winterflow3r··on Ask HN: EU devs who moved to the States for work, has it been worth it?
Thank you very much for the very detailed and informative post! If you don't mind sharing - was it easy to convince your employer to get a transfer to the US?

- Moving to a country where English is the native language is a _lot_ easier than moving to a country where you don't know the language as well. This holds even if a large part of the population speaks English very well; if you don't speak native language of a country, it's hard to feel like a part of society.

-> I had to learn this the very hard way here in Sweden. Even though I come from another Nordic country, I guess I have an annoying or very noticeable accent which makes socializing extremely hard.

Don't know anything about hunting other than it appears to be a very popular hobby here. There is a really strong brand of Sweden being a "come here, everyone speaks perfect English here" type of country but the reality is something completely different. In my experience, you definitely get treated differently based on how accented your Swedish is or if you speak any at all (and I live in the largest city here in Sweden where there a lot of people with a foreign background).

That makes a lot of sense. I've moved UK-> SWE and am not liking it here in SWE at all. I studied in the US for a few years so I totally understand missing public transportation and school systems. However, the software salaries here are low when you compare it to the cost of housing :(

Cool! I used to live in London and was contracting quite a bit but then decided to move to Sweden with a remote job. But wow 7x more for your apartment! And here I thought my London rent was sky-high...

Ooh congrats and hope it goes well with your relocation! If you don't mind sharing are you going to work for a FAANG (or I guess it's MAANG or sth now) or somewhere else?
Winterflow3r··on Ask HN: EU devs who moved to the States for work, has it been worth it?
Thank you very much for the reverse perspective! Do you mind sharing which EU country you moved to? Are you planning to stay longer term or just for a few years and then go back? I recently relocated from UK to Stockholm, Sweden and boy has it been tough going so I was wondering if maybe change of continent would be better. I feel kind of stuck here - mostly socially, but also a bit career-wise.
Winterflow3r··on Ask HN: What was it like during the early days at Pinterest?
Thanks! I don't know Sahil personally and I don't think he'll reply on Twitter, but I'll try. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.
Winterflow3r··on My startup failed, then I found out I was unemployable
How did he lose what he had, if I may ask? Was it the startup investments? What is a land clearing company?
Winterflow3r··on AMA: Ivan Kutskir, creator of Photopea

Winterflow3r··on Technology Without Industry
I keep seeing this AI girfriend thing cropping up more and more often.
Winterflow3r··on “User Engagement” Is Code for “Addiction”
I experience the same. I've noticed that if I start my day with a dose of Twitter, I tend to be much more absentminded and less focused on tasks that need to get done.
Winterflow3r··on Ask HN: What are the best websites that the Anglosphere doesn't know about?
You clearly have never been the target of abuse or a stalker. Nothing less fun than when someone on a dating app in Sweden messages you saying "I know exactly who you are" and you know they can find out where you live in less than five minutes. If it works for 90% of people in Sweden, that's good but they should really make it easier to get your information hidden. Phonebooks of old times only had your number not your full address, the type of car you drive, who is your sambo etc
Winterflow3r··on Ask HN: What is it like to work at Spotify?
Fair enough.
Winterflow3r··on A story about pivots
Would you be open to discuss points 2 and 3 - the key assumptions that were wrong - a bit more?
Winterflow3r··on Ask HN: Anyone switched from law to tech? How are you finding it?
Thanks very much for the reply! I've heard that the work hours are much longer for sure than your avg tech job. Is there anything about law that you personally miss in tech?
Winterflow3r··on Ask HN: How to increase SWE salaries in Europe?
Could you elaborate a bit more on what you tried when you stepped out of your comfort zone?
Winterflow3r··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
This has some traction (a couple of thousand users per month) but needs a bit more work. A colour search engine and browser for lipsticks https://lipcolourmatch.com
Winterflow3r··on Ask HN: Who's looking for a co-founder?

Winterflow3r··on Ask HN: Why does Pinterest dominate Google text search results?
Oh wow :( I'm a bit scared by this, because of what it means for smaller competitors, who can't afford to pour investor dollars into hiring a whole team of software engineers just focused on SEO driven growth
Winterflow3r··on Ask HN: Why does Pinterest dominate Google text search results?
This I did not know about and I'm surprised they don't get penalised by Google in some way at the display of search results stage. I mean sure, I suppose one can do the -pinterest trick, but it's still a bit weird that Google thinks search results that are pretty much the same site but from different tlds are not spammy. Do you think they will change this to prevent Pinterest from essentially spamming some search queries by using the tld hack?
Winterflow3r··on Ask HN: Why does Pinterest dominate Google text search results?
Yep, exactly. I find that Pinterest is slowly making me less and less likely to use Google. Pinterest shows up as the dominating search result even or very specific long tail keywords where one could argue that a collection of images on a login-gated page is not helpful at all.
Winterflow3r··on Ask HN: Why does Pinterest dominate Google text search results?
Ha good question! I run a company that builds visual search engines and one of the sites I build and develop is a colour search engine for lipsticks. One of the main ways people discover it is through Google searches so I was studying which sites rank highest for queries like "nyx budapest lipstick dupes" etc. So yeah, for sure, queries for stuff that lends itself well to visual curation will be full of Pinterest results unlike stuff about Greek philosophy.
Winterflow3r··on Ask HN: Why does Pinterest dominate Google text search results?
Yeah - I've just been reading some of the Pinterest engineering blogs linked above about their sophisticated SEO experimentation framework and ugh, I think it's time to load up my browser with extensions or move away from google completely.

Image search has been borked due to Pinterest results for a few years now, but now my text queries have also started being dominated more and more often by their search results. I'm bummed that Google doesn't count the different Pinterest country domains as duplicates and remove them. instead there is like pages upon pages of the same Pinterest result.

Winterflow3r··on Ask HN: Why does Pinterest dominate Google text search results?
We might be doing very different queries :) If you search for makeup related content, Pinterest comes up a lot because people tend to pin and curate makeup related stuff there

Winterflow3r··on Ask HN: Looking for some feedback on my jewelry business idea
Hey! I checked out your landing page and I'm not sure I fully understand what "sold as a software product" means. Does it mean I get a digital file with a jewelry design that I can then do myself or do I actually get a physical product I can wear?
