WillKirkby··on Show HN: Coding Font – A game to find your favorite coding font
Bug report: on Chrome 95 / Windows, fullscreened on a 1080p display, the data-testid="RetoolGrid:container_question" element gets a dynamically-calculated translate3d transform that's not pixel-aligned, making all the text in the code regions extremely blurry.
WillKirkby··on How to format text in Twitter
If you care at all about users who depend on screen-reader software, don't do this.

GTA San Andreas (2004) did not have cross-platform multiplayer, so OP's assessment may be accurate.
WillKirkby··on G2A pays Factorio developer $40k over illegally obtained game keys
Exactly this.

Typically the keys come from legitimate promotions such as the Humble Bundle, but purchased (as you said) with stolen card details.

WillKirkby··on Finland adds the demoscene as a UNESCO intangible world cultural heritage
The 64k compo was particularly weak this year. I'd recommend checking out the 4k intro and 4k executable graphics compos for some stellar work.

Another one for "People’s names do not change." - transgender people will almost always change their name during their transition.

I really wish it didn't do the forced scroll across the whole artwork on first page load. Makes me feel seasick.
WillKirkby··on Apple has completed its acquisition of Shazam

WillKirkby··on Show HN: BitMidi – Wayback machine for old-school MIDI files
There's https://modarchive.org/ though it seems they're having some server trouble at the moment. Definitely worth checking out when it's back up though.
WillKirkby··on Kitty – a fast, featureful, GPU based terminal emulator
Seems to render The Emoji Demo [0] nice and buttery smooth, though the skintone cube scene appears a tad broken. Quite impressed.

WillKirkby··on Ask HN: After 2-3 years, what are your favorite Touch Bar use cases on the Mac?
Touch ID login is super convenient, and remapping Caps Lock as a tactile Esc key has made for a much more pleasant vim experience. That's it.

WillKirkby··on Headset unlocks phone unlocks laptop: Dread Pirate Roberts didn't stand a chance
By enabling Trusted Device unlocking you're giving yourself convenience at the cost of an increased attack surface. To maintain security you really need to consider the threat model of these 'convenience' features and stop using them.
WillKirkby··on Software compatibility and our own “User-Agent” problem
Additionally, the GameBoy's bootrom compares the Nintendo logo from the cartridge with a copy stored in the bootrom, and refuses to boot if they don't match. However, several bootleg companies realised that the console reads the logo from the cartridge twice - once to display it and once to compare it. By abusing the precise timings involved, they could display a bootlegged logo while still passing the checks.

Discord does: wrap your code in `` inline or ``` for a block.

Language highlighting can be supplied too:

WillKirkby··on How I Fixed a 10-Year-Old Guitar Hero Bug Without the Source Code [video]
> It's unfortunate that this particular bug wasn't found before release but I think the root cause wasn't necessarily this pool size being low but instead insufficient testing.

Unless I'm misinterpreting the video, the bug only occurs if you modify the game to add extra custom songs. The bug won't occur with the original unmodified game data. As with so many things in tech, it works just fine for the intended use case.

WillKirkby··on iOS Version Stats
Sure, Google run staggered rollouts for the Nexus/Pixel line, but all the other OEMs (Samsung, OnePlus, etc) take months to release their customized OS versions, if they ever do.

In addition, Android devices often have very short OS update support lifecycles (2 years seems to be common), while iOS 11 looks to be supporting as far back as the iPhone 5S (2013)
