Whitespace··on Nuclear physicist explains why fusion ignition is hailed as a major breakthrough
I find it interesting that people talk in absolutes ("fusion will never be economical!") when the devices they're using were "impossible" only a few decades ago.

Also the difference between a 4:00:00 marathon and a 3:59:59 is less than a 0.007% improvement but it's a huge victory nonetheless. Once someone proves an arbitrary numerical barrier can be overcome humans tend to make a lot of progress shortly thereafter.

Whitespace··on High-documentation, low-meeting work culture
Seems like the Diataxis author came up with the framework while working at Divio: https://github.com/evildmp/diataxis-documentation-framework/...
Whitespace··on Apple Rankings
I long for the days when the internet was filled with sites like these. Every hour spent tying up our only home phone line on my 14.4 was an hour well spent.
Whitespace··on Ask HN: SaaS You Happily Pay For
I recently discovered knapsackpro.com and I'm so glad to pay for it. CircleCI build times are essentially linear with parallelism now. Builds finish faster so we pay for fewer resources. 15 minute build is now 3m45s at the same cost.

Whitespace··on Soldering Wires – Here's a different way
If you have that many stripped wires to tin, you can use a tub of flux and a solder pot. Dip the wires into the flux, then quickly dip it into the solder pot. Perfectly tinned end with no plastic melting. Really hard to mess up vs a soldering iron, a wire, and solder wire.

You can even dip multiple wires into the flux and solder bath at the same time, as well as use the flux tub again before you solder the tinned wire to the contact.

Whitespace··on Faster CPython 3.12 Plan
I'm glad to see this as an outline, which is how I structure most of my project work. It can be hard for others to follow, but it's very concise and scannable (just read the first indentation level for the top-level idea).

To paraphrase Adam Savage from his excellent book, Every Tool's a Hammer, lists [of lists] are very powerful way to tame the inherit complexity of any project worth doing.

Whitespace··on I've locked myself out of my digital life
As joshstrange mentions above, iCloud password prompts don't support password managers, which is the main reason why I have a memorable one.

Password managers are more useful to me than a spreadsheet in iCloud. I don't see why having a memorable iCloud password implies I should get rid of a password manager.

Do you have a spreadsheet of passwords in a cloud account somewhere?

Whitespace··on I've locked myself out of my digital life
This recently happened to me after my laptop and phone were stolen on vacation. Everything is in 1Password. I of course didn't have the recovery paper with me. I recently changed my iCloud password to be more secure, and luckily I remembered it. But I needed 2FA to log in still.

I had to go to an AT&T store, port my phone number to a different iPhone, restore from an iCloud backup using the SMS 2FA, and then I could finally log into 1Password for my passwords and MFA.

If I didn't have a memorable iCloud password this would have been impossible without the 1Password recovery paper.

Devices are often lost/stolen on vacation where the myriad layers of protection are extremely hard — if not impossible — to penetrate.

Whitespace··on From Shader to Metaball
Any recommendations for doing generative art with shaders on the web?

I've been doing some 2D stuff in Processing, but it's very slow, as the CPU doesn't have the same parallelism as the GPU.

Whitespace··on Brave Search replaces Google as default search engine in the Brave browser
I read it as, "that's too big a discount to ask [qualified CEO candidates] and their families to commit to."

In other words: good luck finding a qualified person to run Mozilla.

Whitespace··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
My iPhone 13 has an amazing front facing 1080p camera, FaceID scanner thing, speaker, and other stuff crammed into a small notch, but the notch on this is even larger and only has a camera? What gives? Why is the notch so wide?

(I'm still getting one to replace my 2012 MacBook Pro)

Whitespace··on A shot to prevent Lyme disease could be on its way
Ahh you're correct, I'm 90 miles from Lyme, not 20.
Whitespace··on A shot to prevent Lyme disease could be on its way
I caught Lyme earlier this year. Recently moved to upstate NY (20 miles from Lyme, CT) and tick checks are a daily thing. Found an adult embedded in my side. Developed a 103ºF fever and fatigue. Dr. took blood for the Lyme test but didn't wait for a positive and prescribed 2 weeks of Doxycycline.

A few days later I found a bullseye rash on my leg (not near the bite area) which pretty much confirmed it.

I felt 100% around 5-7 days after developing fever symptoms.

Whitespace··on Managing Staff-Plus Engineers (2020)
Larger organizations can have a more defined job architecture than just Principal.

At my company Senior Principal is like a Senior Director, and the IC track continues past that. Here's the list for IC / Management tracks:

Software Engineer

Senior Software Engineer / Engineering Manager

Staff Engineer / Senior Manager

Principal Engineer / Director

Senior Principal Engineer / Senior Director

Engineering Fellow / Vice President

Whitespace··on Managing Staff-Plus Engineers (2020)
"Growth" in this context means impact to and relevance within the organization. It's mostly a leadership thing.

Essentially, you don't need to micromanage the work that Staff+ Engineers do, but it's critical to stream information to them throughout the week and sync with them once a week to align and calibrate.

If you do this consistently week over week, that engineer will flourish within the organization. If not, they'll continue to work within their domain until they see no more growth opportunities and then they'll leave.

Source: I've been a Principal Engineer for about four years and didn't really grow under some managers who left me alone. Once I found a manager that consistently invested in me I really thrived, and now I'm a Senior Principal Engineer and feel more comfortable in my current role than earlier.

Whitespace··on Topology 101: The Hole Truth
> A hollow torus can be cut twice — once around the tube and then along the resulting cylinder — so by this definition, it has two holes.

Fascinating! This idea of an inner hole that is hidden and connected is quite unintuitive to me. I majored in mathematics in college but I wouldn't have reached this conclusion through intuition.

Whitespace··on Reddit Community Points
IANARedditor, but this reads to me as a feature of reddit.com for redditors to use. What does that have to do with the rest of the internet?

Is reddit itself not one of the amusement parks / walled gardens that this very page is decrying?

Whitespace··on Google Pay reimagined: pay, save, manage expenses and more
> Most importantly, Google Pay will never sell your data to third parties or share your transaction history with the rest of Google for targeting ads.

I seriously doubt this, but I find it interesting that they address the elephant in the room in the launch announcement.

I wonder how many other Google launches will note this as a perk before the hammer comes down from up high?

Whitespace··on What if a pill can change your politics or religious beliefs?
Ahh yes, with "soberly" being the operative word here. Is there a political variant of Buyer's Remorse?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buyer%27s_remorse

Whitespace··on What if a pill can change your politics or religious beliefs?
Yes, I have taken many, many psychedelics, in high doses up to ++++ on the Shulgin scale.

Delirium was the wrong word, delusion was what I should have said.

cf: https://psychonautwiki.org/wiki/Delusion#Delusion_of_enlight...

Whitespace··on What if a pill can change your politics or religious beliefs?
From personal experience and readings a very interesting aspect of a powerful psychedelic experience is the strong urge that everyone you know should try it. "What if all the senators did LSD/MDMA together!"

Many popular religions spend a great deal of time/energy getting others to join.

I wonder if that desire to proselytize is endemic to all powerful religious/spiritual experiences, or if it's just excited delirium in the case of psychedelics.

Whitespace··on What if a pill can change your politics or religious beliefs?
I understand your sentiment WRT political tools, but to bring it back to the medical therapy discussion: I cheer surgery/chemotherapy while also not wanting my enemies to use surgery/chemotherapy against my will (which amounts to torture)
