WaterSponge··on The price of managed cloud services
"Switching from OpenSearch to running elastic search ourselves did require some initial setup, but we're not changing the size of the team at all in the longterm to accommodate for this switch. Because running things on premise is not a materially different scope of work from running it in the cloud. That's the whole premise behind our overall cloud exit: The team it takes to run our scale of operations in the cloud wasn't any less than what it takes to run that same scale on our own hardware."

and thats the rub... in generic enterprise land everyone has there own ES cluster multiregion to support 100GB of data and 50 rds dbs that could run one instance... what even is a DBA in today's world?

WaterSponge··on Introducing Infrastructure Manager: Google Cloud Resources with Terraform
Is they why they changed the license? they got a hint google was releasing a product based on Terraform?

"The configuration should be actuatable by Terraform version 1.2.3."

So its currently pinned to an older Terraform release...

WaterSponge··on The OpenTF Manifesto
What if Microsoft buys it for there devtools business like NPM, Github, VSCode + Terraform,Consul,Vault.. all just more gateways into azure but like all the others they own allow you to use it how you want opensource.
WaterSponge··on Role of Vitamin D in the prevention of Coronavirus 2019 infection and mortality
accept Ecuador is being particularly ravished by Covid-19 so dont know what that says.
WaterSponge··on Developer salary spreadsheet compiled from tweets
A guide to corporate awareness. Great to read every year to make sure you're not lost in the madness.

"Play your part in the comedy, but don't identify yourself with your role."

WaterSponge··on New Windows 10 Devices From Microsoft
The merger of these threads really takes away the scope of the announcements made and the different discussions being had. The editorializing and changing of URL really alters the environment for conversation in a way that's not healthy and hurts the scope of these things. Then the second highest comment on the thread becomes about the design layout on the page.

So be it if Microsoft/Apple/Google/Android/Amazon/Uber is on the front page multiple times...

WaterSponge··on Android 5.0 Lollipop reviewed
Universal search (once a part of Android) has long been stripped out due to patent issues with Apple.

The app permissions system on Android is all or nothing. Which I think would benefit from a more rigorous approval process. All the access is disclosed though before install.

Glad the world has options.

WaterSponge··on Busy Parents Uber Kids Around for a Carpool Alternative
To add to your point and take it a couple steps further. The continuous automation of physical muscle and mind muscles will reduce white and blue collar work.

Either 300mill was a steal for AOL or Valuations are out of hand?...

Which one is it?

WaterSponge··on Linux Design Tools: High-end Design on a Low-end Budget?
The tools are competent. The problem is usability and training.
WaterSponge··on Comcast Acquiring Time Warner Cable In All Stock Deal Worth $45.2 Billion
Not going to happen: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Cable_%26_Telecommunic...

Just wait till Aereo gets screwed in their Supreme Court case. Then we really will be.

In fact no matter which way they rule in Aereo's case we are screwed. If they rule in favor of Aereo the content companies (Comcast owns NBC) will just start taking content "cable only".

WaterSponge··on Comcast Acquiring Time Warner Cable In All Stock Deal Worth $45.2 Billion
I don't think they compete directly in vast majority of markets and for this to go through they will surely forfeit those smaller contested ones.

I think this will go through. Then they will have a huge "content and subscriber" stick to wave around at Aereo, Netflix, Apple and anyone else wanting to play the net content hero.

WaterSponge··on Comcast will reportedly buy Time Warner Cable
That makes for a rather large "content and subscriber" stick to wave around.
WaterSponge··on Mac Pro (late 2013) replica inside a real trashcan
So modder gets close to fit/finish with his hands and then its not good enough cause the "insides"... which you can't see BTW is the real good stuff is. Design can be just for design sake and not for technical or mechanical superiority.

Your thought train is living somewhere between these: https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/no-true-scotsman https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/special-pleading

WaterSponge··on 3 Enemas Later, Still No Drugs
The sooner all cops shifts are "GoPro'd" for lack of a real product the better. Tech has reached a point where we can archive a shifts worth of video for atleast 6 months.
WaterSponge··on Samsung Profit Drops as New iPhones Win Sales, Won Gains
As Google continues its refinement of Android and mobile hardware is further commoditized Samsungs profits are destined to fall.

Apple on the other hand has a cyclical money printing machine by just releasing new versions of hardware design that fits the margins they would like.

WaterSponge··on Google patents ad-powered taxi service that would offer free rides to shoppers
They day I can give up my driving commute and order a ride uber style and for a reasonable subscription. I'll be all over it.
WaterSponge··on Why I Leaked the XB1M13 Agreement
I think its safe to assume any youtuber or blogger may have some paid endorsements. I thought getting paid for mentions or endorsements required disclosure by the FTC.

WaterSponge··on Amazon Considering Online Pay-TV Service
They do this and package in web DVR like Aereo and I think they have got something.

Problem is DSL and Cable operators are internet operators. Municipalities need to get on top of deploying fiber to the home.

WaterSponge··on Google discards extensions that force feed users ads in Chrome
Why not add the human element?

Just a bit of passive moderation by a humans like students or amazon turks in app-stores/extension libraries for fake and malicious apps would go such a long way.

WaterSponge··on Windows 3.1 written in JS/HTML
Good minesweeper implementation as well.
WaterSponge··on Amazon Wants to Ship Your Package Before You Buy It
I've always wondered if buying Bestbuy and turning them into store, showroom and local warehouses would be a workable model for Amazon.
WaterSponge··on What The Chinese Tech Industry Is Like
So I think the world understands that doing business in china requires some special attention.

Despite all of that they are doing business in China. Serious dollars are being made and value being delivered to millions of users. We should want in on that or to at least have some understanding of how its being done in comparison to US/EU.

WaterSponge··on What The Chinese Tech Industry Is Like
He is an executive at a Chinese tech company. They have PR awareness so he isn't going to get into anything politically controversial.

Also I don't think he was there to pitch you into doing business in China.
