Defederation wars is not the solution. There needs to be finer grained tools. But I don't have any good answers.

But we were told "You can access all content in the lemmyverse from any server/instance" (1). If lemmyworld is a "problematic" instance, why is it one of the recommended sites to join? Seems like the messaging is confusing for new users.

Vvector··on Math has changed the shape of gerrymandering
Isn't the converse true as well? Rural people lack basic understanding of urban issues.

A funny story about Seven Cities of Gold. My friend and I both had a copy, no manual. The "food" counter showed how many days left before starvation. I was a calculated number based on how many soldiers and food units you had.

My friend showed me how to get more food. Just stand in a village and let the natives attack. The food counter would rise. I had to explain it to him that is was rising because his soldier count was decreasing. Once he realized that, he had to restart.

Vvector··on Remembering GitHub's Office, a Monument to Tech Culture
When you are at the office, who watches your kids?

I had a few coworkers that skipped out on daycare when they worked from home. Then they complained about being interrupted all the time by their kids. IMO, there is nothing wrong with putting the kids in daycare while you are working at home.

Vvector··on Lawyer cited 6 fake cases made up by ChatGPT; judge calls it “unprecedented”
Did you really expect ChatGPT to be a full blown dungeon master?
Vvector··on Turds in AI Generated Art
Here is more nonsense shadows by AI. Oops, not AI, but famous paintings by famous artists.

Five is right out.
Vvector··on Cases where full scans are better than indexes
Joining a table on a column without an index will require a linear scan of the column. You almost always want an index on JOIN columns
Vvector··on M.U.L.E. 40th Anniversary Special
I remember Archon being in the same type box.
Vvector··on M.U.L.E. 40th Anniversary Special
C64 supported 4 players out of the box as well. Two joysticks, which were hotseated for each players turn. And two of the users used the keyboard for the auction phase. It worked well enough.

My favorite tactic was to monopolize SmithOre, and then buy/release all the MULEs so everyone after me couldn't build anything. Apparently a need for MULEs causes SmithOre to skyrocket.
Vvector··on Study finds 90% of Australian teachers can't afford to live where they teach
> Fact remains, 90% of teachers can't afford buying a house with their current salary and market conditions.

Is that any different than general population today? Most people cannot afford to buy a house in today's market.

Vvector··on Updating our inactive account policies
Maybe the USPS? No way I'd trust them
Vvector··on Majority of gig economy workers are earning below minimum wage: research
There is confusion between "commute time" before and after my shift and "driving time" required between deliveries or job sites.
Vvector··on Google promised to delete sensitive data. It logged my abortion clinic visit
I park on the street in one of the spots in front of Antigua Coffee and Planned Parenthood. Google doesn't know if I am getting a coffee or an abortion, or maybe both. What specifically should Google software do?

This isn't a contrived example. This is one of the examples the author complained about. "One time, it labeled my visit to a Planned Parenthood clinic as the coffee shop next door, and kept the record." Google isn't a mind reader yet.

Vvector··on NYPD urges citizens to buy AirTags to fight surge in car thefts

Vvector··on Intel Core Ultra Meteor Lake CPU Breaks Cover with 128 GPU Cores
He means the standard residential circuit (like you would plug a PC or TV into) is typically 15 amps. Larger appliances, like an AC, are dedicated circuits, usually at a higher amperage. It's not uncommon for AC to be on 30A or 60A
Vvector··on Automakers are starting to admit that drivers hate touchscreens
> In my experience it was almost always a matter of the hardware being stretched way past its limits.

I find this hard to believe. An Intel 486 from 30+ years ago could run Doom full screen with nearly instant key press response. A 6502/6510 C64 could repaint the entire text screen each frame. Why would today's auto hardware require 500ms to respond to touches on a static menu?

Vvector··on What I learned unsubscribing from 22 newspapers
That works 99% of the time. But that one unscrupulous company sells your email to their "partners" and now you have to block dozens of domains.
Vvector··on Why do prime numbers make these spirals? (2019)
30k±1 = 6x±1 where x = 5k and so on. Why use four formulas when one will suffice?

Vvector··on 20% of Sierra Nevada conifer forests are stranded in habitats that are too warm
"stranded" is a weird adjective to use for a tree.
Vvector··on Launch HN: Electric Air (YC W23) – Heat pump sold directly to homeowners
It's not designed to work in those houses. It's specifically designed for homes with ducts.

"The most common heating system in the US is a natural gas furnace connected to ductwork, with the hot air ultimately coming out of vents in each room. This heat pump is a great replacement for the furnace and air conditioner in these ducted systems."

Vvector··on Ask HN: Post-SVB, what are other areas where groupthink leaves us vulnerable?
Sometimes the title is changed to match the title of the linked post, per HN rules. This can make it look like the post gone. It's still there, just named differently.
Vvector··on Oceania Always at War with Eastasia: Generative AI and Knowledge Pollution
> It’s completely unreliable because it sounds confident and plausible even when it’s wrong.

That applies to my boss, college professors, Wikipedia, or my neighbor after a couple of beers. It's not designed to give the correct medical steps to diagnosis a brain injury.

Vvector··on LLaMA: A foundational, 65B-parameter large language model
Microsoft makes dozens of "really bad moves" every year. This is nothing.
Vvector··on Apple orders entire supply of TSMC's 3nm chips for iPhone 15 Pro and M3 Macs
Launching new processes and building fabs for them is expensive and very risky. Pre-selling the output helps mitigate some of those concerns.
Vvector··on Dark energy from supermassive black holes? Physicists spar over radical idea
"...humans are so confident that our models of reality are correct..."

Dark Matter is just a hypotheses to explain our current observations. Future discoveries may back up dark matter, or point towards something different. This is how Science works.
