Vvector··on Tokyo's Government Is Building Its Own Dating App to Combat Falling Birthrates
Wealth and fertility have an inverse relationship. This is true worldwide, and through recent history (~50 years). Just one of many reasons, women are going to college and having careers at historical highs. And the same women are punished for having kids.

"This decreasing relationship between fertility and income is well known to economists and demographers alike. In addition, it holds true over time: Rich countries, such as the U.S., have experienced a remarkable decline in their fertility rate as they became rich. Also, the relationship holds at the individual level, as rich families tend to have fewer children than poor families." from: https://www.stlouisfed.org/on-the-economy/2016/december/link...

IMO, your generalizations are not fair. There is an inverse relationship between wealth and fertility, globally. https://www.stlouisfed.org/on-the-economy/2016/december/link... The article describes some possible reasons.

And how are we healthier? 42% of adults are obese, compared to 12% fifty years ago.

If someone lets their kids outside while not under direct supervision, there is a real risk of the government taking their kids away from them.

Vvector··on Spotify is increasing US prices again
For me, it's not the cost of the albums. It's the delivery system. Many years ago, I ripped my albums (300+), made them enabled on a media server. It was unintuitive and required maintenance. It did not pass the wife-acceptance test.

Spotify just works (for us). It's got almost everything we want to listen to. There are no tasks required for me to listen to anything. IMO, this is worth any extra costs.

$50/month for the basic hosted option. Self-hosting requires skills and resources not available to everyone. It's very easy (and free) to start on Discord. Then if it takes off, there is too much friction to move to Discourse.

Vvector··on Can turning office towers into apartments save downtowns?
Can you explain the "substantial expense" required to convert an office parking garage to a residential parking garage?

Typically, office building parking ratio is currently around 4 spots per 1,000 square feet (1). With two people sharing a 750 sqft 1BR apartment, there should be 50% extra parking spaces.

Vvector··on Can turning office towers into apartments save downtowns?
can you explain why parking would be an issue? Typically offices are more people-dense than residential. So converting office to residential should reduce the number of parking spaces needed.

There are backups (mostly). To be safe, they picked a restore date before the suspected initial entry date. This is a few weeks before the final attack. Change Healthcare is sanitizing the attacked servers, then migrating data over to the new servers to avoid losing data.

I think you are on the right path. I've seen the arguments that "minimum wage" should be able to afford a median priced 2BR apartment (30% of income). Then who rents the bottom third apartments? I'm all for a bottom tier safety net to keep people off the streets.

Vvector··on Jim Keller criticizes Nvidia's CUDA, x86

You are comparing Nvidia software with AMD hardware. It's the AMD software that has been lacking historically.
