VladimirIvanov··on The Disturbing Secret Behind the World’s Most Expensive Coffee (2016)
There's a paywall. Could only see the first sentence about Civet feces
VladimirIvanov··on What's SAP?
That's just a lie though. Custom software can be audited. I have first hand experience with this
VladimirIvanov··on Stress That Doesn't Pay: The Commuting Paradox (2004) [pdf]
I'm definitely in no commute camp. My office is less than a 5 minute walk away from my apartment. It's literally a distance of two blocks. I'm in apartment right now for lunch cooking myself a meal.
VladimirIvanov··on Economists Are Rethinking the Numbers on Inequality
Bezos also had parents that gave him a several 100 thousand dollar loan that they never expected to be paid back. He's a product of Montessori and Ivy League education. Definitely not a rags to riches story
VladimirIvanov··on My Experience as a Remote Worker
Companies where vacation time is close to zero will also say they have "unlimited." Always ask the interviewers how much vacation time they took specifically. In my experience they'll try to tell you how "someone" took 4 months of vacation but then omit the fact that no one else has taken more than 4 days and median is 0.
VladimirIvanov··on The Bus Ticket Theory of Genius
Yes, and it's often enabled by the manager and the rest of the team who allow the 10xer to work from home several days in a row on a sprint until he's changed the code so drastically that only he can understand it
VladimirIvanov··on The Bus Ticket Theory of Genius
I'm going to have to disagree with you there. Being a top chess or go player in modern times necessitates being a child prodigy. The skill gap in chess and go is enormous. I don't think the number of players is the primary indicator of how difficult it is to be at the "top" of an activity.
VladimirIvanov··on If People Were Paid by Ability, Inequality Would Plummet
It would also dramatically change society as currently valuable social networks that do not improve ability would be abandoned in favor of groups that improve ability. The MBA degree would become irrelevant overnight as it's a very expensive networking and screening process.
VladimirIvanov··on Engineer Says Software Firm Cut Her Maternity Leave Short After Her Baby Died
I'm in the US and a coworker came to work the next day after giving birth. There is no time allotted for maternity leave and she had already used her vacation time at the beginning of the year before she was pregnant. I was at a charity event with the CEO and he was laughing about it saying."she was born to breed."

VladimirIvanov··on The making of Jim Simons
Do you remember what the titles of papers? I'd like to read them.
VladimirIvanov··on The Global Fertility Crash
The marginal cost per child has increased dramatically. In developing economies an additional child can sometimes be an asset as they are free labor for a family farm or business. In a developed economy(specifically the USA) the cost per child is primarily driven by educational expenses. College education and also private high school and elementary education. Despite what people say it much more difficult to be successful without a college education. The options for obtaining a college education without your parents money and without student loans are slim. There are two possibilities; military academy/ ROTC program or athletic/academic scholarships. The ROTC military is the most likely one but not everyone is accepted. There are many medical disqualifying conditions such as ADHD ect. So if you are a college graduate and you want your children to have the same life opportunities that you did, then there is a limit to how many children you can have based on your income and net worth.
VladimirIvanov··on The Global Fertility Crash
If you intend to send your child to college then the cost per child is very high. If you don't then the marginal cost per child is very low. Another consideration is whether the mother works and if it's possible for her to keep taking time from work every few years to have additional children. One thing I notice about large families is that they usually do not pay for their children's college education. TLDR - marginal cost per child increases in developed countries.
VladimirIvanov··on The Global Fertility Crash
There are studies that show are an inverse correlation between female fertility and IQ.
VladimirIvanov··on Lots of Job Hunting, but No Job, Despite Low Unemployment
When corporations stop using stock buybacks as a tax free mechanism to return value to shareholders
VladimirIvanov··on Early Retirement May Speed Up Cognitive Decline: Study
I plan to study and play chess and go once I retire. I also want to contribute to OSS. I think if you engage in truly intellectually challenging activities daily then you will be lucid for your entire life. The brain needs stimulation like a muscle in order to retain its ability over time.
VladimirIvanov··on Xi Jinping's daughter has returned to US to resume studies at Harvard
The article gives an interesting perspective that sending her to the US tostudy allows him to recall her back as a sort of gesture in the future
VladimirIvanov··on NBA's China dilemma: $4B at risk as Chinese TV cancels game broadcasts
I didn't follow this at the time but I can immediately see that there exactly two ways to interpret the "Chinese pig" comment and one is very insulting. I'm guessing that the person who said the quote did not mean it as an insult
VladimirIvanov··on How Adam Neumann’s Over-the-Top Style Built WeWork
"Both Neumanns could be impulsive at times, former executives say. Ms. Neumann has ordered multiple employees fired after meeting them for just minutes, telling staff she didn’t like their energy. She and Mr. Neumann have sent maintenance and IT staff to their homes to fix various items."

This really bothers me. I know that if I was at WeWork I would probably be fired for "bad energy" because it would be obvious that I was just working at a job and not part of the WeWork cult.

VladimirIvanov··on The grandmaster diet: How to lose weight while barely moving
Chess players are drug tested by WADA for major tournaments. Amphetamines would not necessarily help those without ADHD because they would slow down their thought process. Time management is an important part of the game and simply remaining focused is not difficult for top players.

Also amphetamines don't "make you so focused that you forget to eat." Amphetamines directly inhibit appetite.

VladimirIvanov··on California passes bill that classifies gig economy workers as employees
So what happens to Thumbtack's business model now?
VladimirIvanov··on I got fired from Facebook (for having a YouTube channel)
After looking into this more I believe he was fired for a video he made about women in tech were he advocates traditional gender roles and references Sheryl Sandberg to support his argument.
VladimirIvanov··on My Time at Google and After
It is wrong to have a relationship with your direct report. However, I'm having trouble understanding why she intentionally became pregnant with her married boss. She was around 37 years old at the time. I also don't understand why he wanted to make her pregnant and have no involvement with his child. It all just seems bizarre. He didn't marry her or make any commitment. Clearly once the child was born from an affair that violates Google's rules she would have to at least switch departments.
VladimirIvanov··on I got fired from Facebook (for having a YouTube channel)
Wow, his wife left him too. I hope he's doing okay.

I'm surprised he didn't even get a warning.

VladimirIvanov··on Meeting online has become the most popular way U.S. couples connect: study
I recently had a bizare experience. My girlfriend that I met in college and was dating for 4 years broke up with me and a week later I saw her profile on Bumble.

It was definitely very upsetting. Women have a lot more power with online dating and can essentially meet someone at anytime if they are good looking. I don't doubt that she has dozens or even hundreds of messages from guys.

I don't have many high quality pictures and I don't do very well.

In online dating it's definitely true that a small percentage of men (say 20%) has sex and the opportunity for a relationship with the majority of women (say 80%).

So I guess I will be single for awhile

VladimirIvanov··on Meeting online has become the most popular way U.S. couples connect: study
On the other hand it's a depressing thought that now it's becoming unacceptable to say hello to someone you see in a public place.

Online dating is definitely a winner take all environment. I certainly have not had much success.

It's also quite superficial to reduce everything down to a two dimensional picture.

VladimirIvanov··on Google Employee Writes Memo About ‘The Burden of Being Black at Google’
Does anyone else feel uncomfortable around people that talk about politics at work? I would much rather talk about the latest sports balls games. There's so many conversations that you can have and many different statistics. You can even have sports balls debates that are enjoyable such as who is the best ball thrower.
VladimirIvanov··on Madoff whistleblower Harry Markopolos calls GE a ‘bigger fraud than Enron’
Marlopolos point where he says the Baker Hughes investment should take a goodwill impairment charge is incorrect. GE is right when they point out that they own more 50% of the company so it needs to be consolidated.
VladimirIvanov··on Paternity Leave Was Crucial After the Birth of My Child
I worked for a company in America in the past that had a woman that came to work the next day after giving birth as their was no parental leave whatsoever. We were at a lunch after a charity fundraising event and the CEO laughed about it and said that "she was born to breed."
VladimirIvanov··on ‘I don’t smell ’ Meet the people who have stopped washing
There was this Korean guy that I used to work with that told me that Koreans have a gene that prevents body odor. The thing was he basically smelled like a high school gym locker room 247. I really didn't know what to say to him.
