VincentEvans··on New York medical school eliminates tuition after $1B gift
Trailing 10 year performance is a standard reporting metric used to facilitate risk-and-return decisions in an uncertain world.

Here it serves to simply add weight to an argument that expecting a 5% annual return for invested endowment funds is reasonable and supported by historical evidence.

If things do not go as well going forward - all it means that principal will erode over time.

VincentEvans··on How I build and run behavioral interviews
… which just serves to reinforce the point that the interview becomes a rehearsed dog and pony show where interviewer asks contrived questions that are compiled and put into an “interview prep course” shilled on Linked In, and interviewee “references notes” they prepared from said course on how to best answer said questions. All done while claiming to look for “genuine insight”.

Maybe it’s just me, but whenever I hear a question like “tell me about a time…” - I simply can’t remember. These routine job-related things just don’t stick out in my mind as something to catalog for some future contrived performance and disappear out of my mind together with other uninteresting and unimportant noise, like a name of the clerk at the DMV or what was advertised during the commercial break when I turned on the TV in my hotel room.

I suspect that people who readily jump in with an answer - are the ones you claim to guard against, those who drilled and trained for giving responses to these interviews.

“As of October 2023, Harvard's endowment has an 8.2% 10-year return. In fiscal year 2023, endowment returns averaged 7.7%, with smaller endowments posting larger returns. Institutions with over $5 billion in assets have historically had higher 10-year average returns of 9.1%.”

I didn’t say risk-free, I said “conservative”.

But let’s turn to examples:

- 1B in donations at 5% APR conservatively invested will yield 50M every year.

- At yearly tuition rate of 59K the earned interest is enough to pay for 850 students without drawing down the invested principal.

- Albert Einstein college of medicine admits about 150 freshmen every year and medical school is 4 years long. So at any given time there are 600 students studying medicine at this school.

It seems to me that simply earned interest on this donation should be enough to allow students to attend this school free of tuition indefinitely.

It’s not “declining” but rather being actively replaced and rejected by the population. When your nation suffers brutal aggression perpetrated by the neighbor - it makes it no longer fashionable to speak the language of the aggressor. The fact that Russia also denies that Ukraine and Ukrainians are even a real nation and culture distinct from Russia fuels the sentiment too.

Pfft. I like my car.

VincentEvans··on Wind turbines are friendlier to birds than oil-and-gas drilling
If you stand by the pumpjack, and the sun is at just the right height, and you carefully position yourself in such way as to place the pumpjack structure directly between yourself and the sun - you could personally experience the abject misery of having a moving shadow be cast upon your person - so that you can experience the horrors of the wind turbines first-hand.

However do take care of not breathing any fumes or stepping into any toxic spillages in the vicinity of oil equipment as not to pollute your immersive experience with any negative effects that are unrelated to the wind turbines.

Lol, thats it? This is the downside compared to the oil and coal?

Elaborate. Haven’t stood next to either. My curiosity is piqued. What should I be expecting when I find myself so lucky?
VincentEvans··on ChatGPT for Teams
Here’s an idea - ChatGPT app for Apple Carplay. Right now while driving i often do “hey siri” - but instead of carrying on a conversation where I can ask clarifying questions, I am most greeted with “i cannot show you this information while driving”, because rather than summarizing the answer, Siri tries to show me some website link.

Quickly, how many feet in a mile? What about quarter of a mile? Eighth of a mile? How many inches is a half of a mile?

Now try with kilometers, meters, and centimeters. I think this is the point that is being made.

VincentEvans··on My 3-year experiment as a digital nomad
Lol, it’s clearly not for you. I’ve been actually living this lifestyle, but even at the planning stage i never bothered to even make a list of cons, speaking nothing of the long and detailed one you manifested on the spot just to post on HN.

Maybe there’s a market opportunity for an EV trailer - something that has own batteries for extra distance, or even it’s own electric assist motors.

Not californian, but my interest was piqued by this “idea”. So what you are saying is - if my property values double - so do my taxes? Is the goal here to force me out of my home?
VincentEvans··on How we turned the tide in the roach wars
By the way, you mileage may vary based on construction etc, but in brick row homes where I rented - I found that roaches from neighbors weren’t an issue. Once eliminated in my unit - I didn’t see them coming back from the neighbors.

Mice however, were much harder to control. I was never able to completely eliminate them. Nearly but never entirely gone - they travel between shared walls. In a single home - I was able to completely eliminate them relatively quickly and easily, but not in a row home.

VincentEvans··on How we turned the tide in the roach wars
When I was a landlord - i found foggers that I bought at Home Depot very effective. Nuked roach populations between tenants multiple times. Had personal experience living in the same unit - after putting out traps, fogging, and subsequently keeping the place clean - no more roaches. But as soon as nasty people move in, they come back.

VincentEvans··on Waymo outperforms comparable human benchmarks over 7M+ miles
I find it a pretty optimistic take when someone claims success of a safety system after conducting a test that basically equals 600 people using it for an average year worth of driving…

Is it enough to support a pretty extraordinary claim that a fully self-driving system that will then be sold in millions of vehicles is now perfectly safe?

VincentEvans··on Record global temperatures and U.S. billion-dollar disasters
Wouldn’t adjusting historical values for inflation actually increase the magnitude of the numbers? Eg $100 in 1980s is $300 in 2023 (or whatever, not real numbers) - the number is larger, not smaller.
VincentEvans··on Record global temperatures and U.S. billion-dollar disasters
Climate change denial has fluently shifted from outright refusal to accept the reality of an impending catastrophic change in climate - to refusing to accept human origins of the change.

It now goes along the lines of “weather has always fluctuated dramatically since the ancient times and this is no different” without skipping a beat or admitting to pushing a counter-productive agenda for the last 20 years.

VincentEvans··on Ukraine forced to cut military operations as foreign aid dries up
When authoritarian regimes can outwait their democratically elected opponents while manipulating populist politics to achieve their desired outcomes - we need to face what will ultimately happen: condemn if not ourselves, then our children to much bigger war in not so distant futures.

Normal people choose an app that works for everyone. If they can’t be bothered to switch to something, like Telegram, or Whatsapp, or Discord, or Line or Signal, or… is because they value your companionship not worth the bother.

So buy an iphone to fit in, or respect yourself a bit more and move on and find a better group to interact with.

VincentEvans··on Tesla Cybertruck Pricing and Specs
There are a couple of cars: Plymouth Prowler, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Volkswagen new Beetle, and now Tesla Truck

… that after initial splash will look super lame, fad-ey, gaudy, and dorky. Close your eyes and visualize two Plymouth Prowlers next to each other at the red light - it’s going to look just like that.

I hope they follow it up with a stylish but otherwise classy looking variant.

I wonder how is the second-hand market for PT Cruisers…
