VincentEvans··on New research reveals longevity gains slowing, life expectancy of 100 unlikely
You haven’t quite come to grips with mortality, I think.
VincentEvans··on We put a coding agent in a while loop
I imagine something along the lines of cloud platforms rolling out functionality that caters to vibe-coding crowd - one stop shop: you enter your prompts and it spins up your code along with the infra. I mean why wouldn’t they - seem like a goldmine.
VincentEvans··on We put a coding agent in a while loop
I assume you have some software engineering fundamentals training.
VincentEvans··on Meta just suspended the Facebook account of Neal Stephenson
Last time meta blocked my account was because I gave away free framing lumber after demolishing my poorly framed basement. Somehow it got flagged and that was that. Thankfully I don’t give a damn, and now never will.

Ps: some couple happily picked up 100 or so 2x4 studs of various lengths to build a greenhouse for their garden with.

VincentEvans··on We put a coding agent in a while loop
There will be a a new kind of job for software engineers, sort of like a cross between working with legacy code and toxic site cleanup.

Like back in the day being brought in to “just fix” a amalgam of FoxPro-, Excel-, and Access-based ERP that “mostly works” and only “occasionally corrupts all our data” that ambitious sales people put together over last 5 years.

But worse - because “ambitious sales people” will no longer be constrained by sandboxes of Excel or Access - they will ship multi-cloud edge-deployed kubernetes micro-services wired with Kafka, and it will be harder to find someone to talk to understand what they were trying to do at the time.

VincentEvans··on Blue-collar jobs are gaining popularity as AI threatens office work
“In the past” trades did not enjoy nearly the income levels they do now. The rise in demand for their services and corresponding raise in their compensation are linked to the wealth of the other half of the economy.
VincentEvans··on Blue-collar jobs are gaining popularity as AI threatens office work
Who are these trades going to sell their services to when a large proportion of people employed in white collar work are looking at a prospect of reduced income or loss of jobs?
VincentEvans··on Time travel is self-suppressing
Tall, powerful, beautifully bald, multitudinous and decease resistant!
VincentEvans··on Time travel is self-suppressing
Maybe they are all mostly dead and ever-more-feral survivors ridden by the crippling radiation- and pollution-borne genetic sicknesses are birthing still-born and slowly dying out while picking through the debris left from the civilizational collapse caused by global warming, ai, and the resulting world wars.

And the last stronghold of civilization are genetically superior, warlike, numerous, but illiterate Tate descendants hidden in the mountains of Romania, unable to build anything more advanced than a cudgel used in the rituals to determine the alpha leader.

VincentEvans··on 1976 Soviet edition of 'The Hobbit' (2015)
I always thought that the passages that talk about Smeagol before he was corrupted by the ring - made it rather easy to think of him as a hobbit or maybe a human.
VincentEvans··on Job Listing Site Highlighting H-1B Positions So Americans Can Apply
Curious, just based in the facts of what has been stated - does this pass the sniff test to you, not exploitative at all?
VincentEvans··on Job Listing Site Highlighting H-1B Positions So Americans Can Apply
I can’t even tell how this would be different from what is commonly termed as human trafficking.
VincentEvans··on Someone keeps stealing, flying, fixing and returning this man's 1958 Cessna
To be accurate I am “miffed” at the blasé response of airport admin and local police. No “criminal negligence”, no “dereliction of duty”. Not even administrative punishment for utter incompetence at a primary job with rather serious potential consequences.
VincentEvans··on Someone keeps stealing, flying, fixing and returning this man's 1958 Cessna
While until recently I had to, in the name of flight safety, carefully pack my bags while consulting the sizes of shampoo containers allowed in the carry-on baggage, surrender my unapproved nail clippers, and with my shoes in hand and pants belt-less - stand in line to be x-rayed and patted down on my way to board a plane…

… someone can without anyone ringing any alarm bells and not phasing the local law enforcement one bit - take off multiple times unnoticed and unidentified on a private plane, and, if they choose to, fly it straight into a freshly refueled jet that I am sitting in waiting to take off.

Shhh, hope “terrorists” don’t read this comment. Or the article in LA Times.

VincentEvans··on How to negotiate your salary package
Did Patrick write anything about negotiating a raise?

Or maybe someone came across any actionable advice they’d like to share?

VincentEvans··on Retailers will soon have only about 7 weeks of full inventories left
It seems that many did not come across https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emperor%27s_New_Clothes … and are still busy trying to figure out the allegedly intricate but evidently incorporeal designs this administration is wearing.
VincentEvans··on California overtakes Japan to become the world's fourth largest economy
It may have been a subtle joke. Eg US would then consider it a break-away territory and president would declare a timeline of bringing back into the fold.
VincentEvans··on Thieves took their iPhones. Apple won't give their digital lives back
>hit lock button 5 times so it forces a passcode

I didn’t know what that meant - so I googled it. And it says something entirely different….

Quote: Pressing the lock button (or side button) five times quickly on an iPhone or many Android devices will activate Emergency SOS. This will prompt a countdown and eventually, if not cancelled, initiate a call to emergency services, potentially alerting emergency contacts and sharing your location.

VincentEvans··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
… or churches
VincentEvans··on Framework temporarily pausing some laptop sales in the US due to tariffs
> US margins are underwater

Increase price and pass cost of tariffs down to consumer

VincentEvans··on Capitol Trades: Tracking Stock Market Transactions of Politicians
IMO broad categories of government employees should be restricted to owning broad index funds. But at least as far as upper echelons of political power - house, senate, supreme court, president and his cabinet - there should scarcely be any debate at all.

Personally I would prefer restricting them to SNP500. US does well - they’ll do well.

VincentEvans··on Utah becomes first US state to ban fluoride in its water
When you watch any British tv the first thing you notice is teeth indeed.
VincentEvans··on Project Operation Whitecoat (2010)
Being treated from tax perspective the same way as every other legal entity without extraordinary privilege is “breaking separation of church and state”?
VincentEvans··on Project Operation Whitecoat (2010)
The meaning of the words “freedom” is for you to be able to make your own choice, and for others - theirs.
VincentEvans··on Project Operation Whitecoat (2010)
Thank you for thoughtful post. I know near nothing about Sufi religion. Sounds enlightened and good for them/you! My words were very influenced by frustration rooted in my experiences in US, especially as of late.
VincentEvans··on Project Operation Whitecoat (2010)
What other antics and policies do “we” groan about and then nevertheless elect politicians to govern the rest of us? Policies attacking female reproductive freedom? Attacks on LGBT? Attacks on freedom of religion? Attacks on separation of church and state?

I feel like you are trivializing the dogged, uncompromising, and ceaseless war organized religion wages against intellectualism, progress, and tolerance.

VincentEvans··on Population much more than 8.2B, rural areas underestimated
Using your own contrived math - if you have just 30 helpers - you can count population of China in 1 year. Or with 219 helpers you can do the same for world population.

In US, for the 2020 decennial census, the U.S. Census Bureau hired approximately 500,000 temporary workers across the country to assist with the count.

VincentEvans··on Amazon plans to lay off 14,000 managerial positions to save $3.5B yearly
I am curious how do you just hire 14,000 managers at the cost of $3.5B yearly more than you needed?

Maybe they should fire the guy responsible for THAT.

VincentEvans··on Tesla Cybertruck deliveries on hold as trims are flying off 'bulletproof' truck
I will acknowledge this, thought its not exactly what I had in mind.

If Cybertruck marketing claims it to be a truck - I’d like to see it perform in said capacity like a truck would. My F250 tows 8,000 lbs travel trailer as an example. I am yet to see one towed by Cybertruck.

VincentEvans··on Tesla Cybertruck deliveries on hold as trims are flying off 'bulletproof' truck
When I actually see Cybertruck used to tow something - it will be noteworthy because I never seen it yet.
