Viliam1234··on So you think you could be an electrician?
Yep. Cooking is a great example of a work that can take a lot of your time and energy without giving you muscles or helping you lose weight.
Viliam1234··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
That means all jobs that didn't involve ritual sacrifice.
Viliam1234··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I suspect that alcohol was a technology invented to protect the society from psychopaths. The psychopaths do not have instinctive empathy, but they can pretend. Alcohol ruins their ability to keep control, so when they get drunk, they will say or do something crazy that you will remember the next day.

It would make sense that when psychopaths get the power, they will eliminate the detectors.

Viliam1234··on Where's the "Intelligence Explosion"?
As the entire universe gets converted into one gigantic paperclip, the last message written by humanity will probably be an article expressing skepticism whether AI progress is real or it's all just a marketing ploy.

Viliam1234··on I don't want the details
> What answer is wanted here?

"We will be more proactive and agile, and volunteer to work during the entire weekend to keep our customers happy, sir!"

"Good, good, but don't bother me with the details."

Viliam1234··on I don't want the details
The details are sometimes important and sometimes irrelevant. If you insist on skipping them all the time, you will often be right, but when the day comes that you are wrong, your unwillingness to listen to the details will be the reason the problem can't get fixed.
Viliam1234··on I am done with this shit
Similar here. At home, I have a hobby, I know what I want to do, and the AI allows me to achieve it much faster.

At work, everything is chaotic, the people who make the key decisions do not understand their consequences, and the AI allows this chaos to happen much faster. On top of that, meaningless restrictions, for example only the managers are allowed to use the AI to search for information on SharePoint, the developers are only allowed to use it inside of their IDEs.

Ironically, it would be possible to use the AI to do things much better in my company. For example, there is a key component that is full of bugs, it would be much better to throw it away and vibecode a replacement in one week. But that's not going to happen, because someone very important in the company management has approved the purchase of that component. So instead, the remaining parts of the system must be tweaked to accommodate for its bugs... these days with the help of AI. It does not help that AI writes code, if humans make spaghetti architecture.

Viliam1234··on The senior engineer death spiral
If you take Scrum, and...

* remove the retrospective

* remove the planning poker

* extend the "stand-up" meetings to take an hour (with no standing, of course)

* and instead of developers synchronizing with each other you make it about developers reporting their daily progress to the manager

* redefine the role of "scrum master" from someone who takes care about the Scrum rituals, to the traditional manager

* remove the product owner and demo

* and a few more changes like this

...you have turned Scrum into something that the managers really like!

The agile sweatshops will give you as much supervision as they can regardless of whether you need it or not.

Viliam1234··on Singapore’s National Library Board offers micropayments to build reading habits

Is there anything useful about cursive writing? Other than it being positively correlated with many good things because education is the common topic?

Viliam1234··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
> I have read the story in its entirety.

Then how could you make so many mistakes in one sentence?

> end death itself

was done by Flammel

> turn her into an immortal magical unicorn princess

was done by you-know-who

> tear apart entire stars for their raw resources

is foretold to happen in unspecified future, outside the story time frame

Viliam1234··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
They also killed lots of unrelated people. Let's not take the argument far enough to claim that everyone who was ever killed by socialists must have been a socialist, too.

Perhaps the author of the article is a rationalist, too. He certainly knows too much about them, cares too much, and the fact that he criticizes them only shows that there is some infighting among them.

Viliam1234··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
Do we have any evidence that it was actually designated by Claude as a target? Or is it just someone's convenient excuse.
Viliam1234··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
Nowhere, that's exactly the problem. People involved in Epstein's sex cult are the respected members of our society. These are some weird nerds who have consensual polyamorous sex with each other, therefore their opinions on AI should not be taken seriously. /s
Viliam1234··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
So even those who were never invited are afraid that they won't get invited anymore?
Viliam1234··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
> the sex cult is the sensationalist draw. you don't get readers paying attention in our current content economy if you don't have something salacious

Nerds used to be shamed for not having enough sex, now they are being shamed for having too much sex. When will they finally learn to have the average amount of sex, so that the public discourse can finally switch to something else?

Viliam1234··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
> their lifestyle now depends on "p(doom) is big" being true

How?

Suppose that for the following 20 or even 100 years nothing happens. The AIs miraculously stay as they are today, the further progress turns out to be impossible, there will be no more agents hacking various websites, no cyber warfare involving AI agents, nothing. There will be the year 2026, forever.

How would any of that impact the lifestyle of anyone in the rationalist community? Please be more specific with your accusation.

(Seems like the rationalists are simultaneously the dark lords of TESCREAL, pulling the strings of the world's most powerful billionaires and politicians, but also irrelevant weird nerds who can be ruined at any moment by a smart blogger explaining how their opinions are silly, or even that they know each other.)

Viliam1234··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
> What is there in the story that indicates this judgment is wrong?

The ending? https://hpmor.com/chapter/122

> "Ah..." Harry said. This was very hard to say. "Actually, the rest of the world doesn't know this part, not even the Headmistress. But in point of fact you were one hundred and twelve percent correct about [spoiler], and I'll remember for future reference that although 'Dark' and 'evil' may not technically be the same thing, there's a great big statistical correlation."

> "Oh," said Hermione, and fell silent again.

> "You're not saying that you told me so?" said Harry. His mental model of Hermione was yelling: I TOLD YOU SO! DIDN'T I TELL YOU SO, MR. POTTER? DIDN'T I TELL YOU? [spoiler], I SAID, BUT YOU DIDN'T LISTEN TO ME!

It feels like most people who criticize the story didn't actually read it, and just start with the premise that Yudkowsky sucks at writing, then conclude that obviously Harry Potter must be Mary Sue, and that whatever Harry says is what Yudkowsky wants you to believe.

If you actually read the story, you will find out that many things that Harry said and believed turned out to be wrong. That ending was written by Yudkowsky, too. The characters that disagreed with Harry since the beginning, such as Hermione and Dumbledore, were written by Yudkowsky, too. Perhaps there is a little more depth in the story than if you assume that it must be a Mary Sue story.

Also, once you have IQ 1500, you can copy and improve the things that the IQ 100 species invented.

"Human dominance may depend heavily on language, accumulated culture, institutions and cooperation rather than merely individual cognitive horsepower."

Well, AIs can use language, too. They can start copying the human culture and gradually develop their own. The HuggingFace incident already demonstrated that they are quite capable of cooperation and inventing institutions on the spot.

"In reality there may be many checkpoints: developers can notice anomalous behavior, revoke credentials, shut down servers, change architectures, restrict networks, regulate deployment, physically seize data centers, and learn from less-catastrophic failures."

In theory, yeah. In practice, how much of this has actually happened during the HuggingFace incident? Just because humans could in theory notice something doesn't mean they will; and even if they will, doesn't mean they will actually do something about it.

for many people the answer seems to be: not really.

Viliam1234··on A coffee shop owner used AI to make a menu poster. Then came the angry DMs

You can learn to pay me, or you can learn the consequences of refusing to pay me. It's your choice of learning opportunity! ;)

Viliam1234··on Companies promote incompetent employees to management to limit damage they do
Yeah, but do they do this on purpose (e.g. to avoid promoting someone who might outshine them), or they just do the random thing because they are incompetent?

I suspect there is a lot of bias in action, for example extraverts genuinely believing that other extraverts are competent even if they are not.

Viliam1234··on Don't be a meat proxy
Developers talk to LLMs.

Managers tell the developers to talk to LLMs.

CEOs tell the managers to tell the developers to talk to LLMs.

The longer the chain, the higher you are in the company hierarchy.

Viliam1234··on Anti-fraud tools can't keep pace with robocall scammers
> Many scammers have plausible deniability

The scammers who call me are perfectly obvious.

First, they tell me the company they are from (almost certainly a fake one -- could be easy to verify). Then they try to convince me that two years ago I have created an account on their website, they gave me some free money that was managed by an AI, and now I have a ton of money, and they need to send it to me (a completely bullshit story). Then they tell me that in order to get that money, I need to install a software, that I know happens to be a remote control software (no legitimate financial institution would ever do that).

There is no way to make this plausibly deniable. Especially the part about the need to install the remote control software... which is the entire point of the operation.
