ViViDboarder··on From Plex to Jellyfin Media Server
It’s not hard for my parents. Just “search for X thing”. It doesn’t really matter what server it’s coming from.

3 & 4 aren’t issues for me. My home upload speeds suck (same for many people), so transcoding to optimize for this is unfortunately necessary. And I don’t even have subtitles downloaded.

ViViDboarder··on From Plex to Jellyfin Media Server
Exactly. Actually, this blog post is about how it’s not very painful to migrate.

I’m not sure I understand. With Emby you still have to trust that they have a secure password and don’t share/get them compromised.

> No retailer is going to let a company advertise how to buy products cheaper somewhere else.

Many do. I’ve bought plenty of products that, inside the packaging or via product registration, try to get you to use their first party store fronts.

I agree that nobody works allow you to advertise this on the packaging, but within the package is a different story.

Sure. That just means higher unemployment and fewer overall consumer options.

Was this sarcastic? I’ve literally abandoned or avoided all those products as well. I don’t want to support abusive companies or exploit user privacy.

Yea. I think that’s the opposite point that you’re trying to make. That’s what would make them less qualified as reviewers since the domain is very different.

> Yes. Because if not each and every restaurant, who gets to pick and choose? If the restaurant owners, none. If the disabled, all. And there isn't really an in-between is there? So all is better than none.

I think this is why some laws state “reasonable accommodations”. If a ramp is impossible or unaffordable with the restaurants margins, what should be the course of action? Should the restaurant close? If so, that doesn’t actually improve accessibility.

The current law may already use this barometer and the horror story examples may be overblown, but at least this seems like a reasonable way to approach things.

The permissions don’t differentiate, which is why an honest privacy policy is important. If they have access to the contacts but the policy states that they do not transmit, store, or process the contacts on their servers I can feel safer.

It appears to me that Google is asking companies to lie about their policies or otherwise make it their policy to retain contact data on their servers.

The only reason I can see for this is to make Google seem less bad when it comes to privacy compared to other companies because they can point to all these other companies you’re giving permission to store data with.

I didn’t think they did major version auto updates while security patches are offered for the current version. I could be wrong.
ViViDboarder··on (Redacted) has hacked and stalked me for 12 years [pdf]
To be fair, they are damned if they do and dammed if they don’t. Don’t include auto updates, you’re in the news and people are upset that they have been hacked or catching viruses.

For the average user, auto updates are a blessing.

Nearly every system I’ve used does still give you control by allowing you to opt out.

If you get rid of the above organizations, the local police become the organization with the capability to destroy any single individuals with no repercussions. Though they have few already, the FBI does investigate local law enforcement agencies.

The fact that the head of the FBI is an appointee of an elected official, there is some public accountability through voters if there is enough transparency to inform voters of what is going on.

I suppose the same is true for most local police though. As it stands, we don’t get much transparency. For a democracy to work properly, the public needs to be informed. The stonewalling by law enforcement at all levels prevents the public from holding them accountable.

ViViDboarder··on Covid Vaccine messenger RNA found in breast milk

It’s not for one party. The VPN protects your traffic from any party other than Cloudflare. Exactly as it would with any VPN.

It’s not really a discount because the plan is typically more expensive than a BYOD plan. In a sense, you’re amortizing the cost of the phone over the terms of the plan.

If you look for examples of that, you’ll find it looks like nearly every loan. So cars, and houses function pretty similarly.

ViViDboarder··on Twilio cutting 11% – Letter from CEO [pdf]
Totally agree. Saying they are ensuring that their layoffs didn’t disproportionately impact minorities and pregnant women doesn’t mean disproportionately fire white men.

It’s got that. You can open Wallet, go to your card, hit the button in the top right with numbers and then there’s a button to get a new card number. I haven’t used it, so maybe it’s not instant or something.

I think HCL is very nice. Easy to read and write, has clear types, has basic functions (arithmetic, string manipulation, etc) with the ability to extend with custom functions as well. It can also be easily converted to JSON, which is a pretty cool way of adapting for machine manipulation.

All the examples I’ve found are Docker…

Most use of Vagrant I saw was in demoing how to set up and deploy a cluster. So deploying 3 Nomad nodes within 3 VMs created in Vagrant.

Oh, I’m the opposite. I find HCL so much nicer that when I was attempting to use k8s for my home servers I decided to do it with Terraform. Now I’m running Nomad, Consul, and Vault.
