Vaslo··on The Windows Subsystem for Linux is now open source
If you can do it better and use a very permissive open license, no one is stopping you.
Vaslo··on The Windows Subsystem for Linux is now open source
WSL is amazing if you work for a non tech company that is a windows house but want to do development in Linux. It’s seamless (at least to my middle ability) for VS Code.
Vaslo··on Ask HN: How much better are AI IDEs vs. copy pasting into chat apps?
I struggle in two places - algorithms and understanding all the possible inputs to make a graph in something like MatPlotLib. I find most of my time is wasted trying to get something like those to work and I can do it easily in cursor with Claude 3.7.

I’m rapidly producing something now, and feel uncomfortable with the leverage I’m giving cursor/claude but I am trying to get it done and come back and refactor.

Vaslo··on On Not Carrying a Camera – Cultivating memories instead of snapshots
When I read about this topic, I’m always reminded of David Lynch’s Lost Highway:

Ed: Do you own a video camera? Renee Madison: No. Fred hates them. Fred Madison: I like to remember things my own way. Ed: What do you mean by that? Fred Madison: How I remembered them. Not necessarily the way they happened.

Vaslo··on An Alabama landline that keeps ringing
I feel like a lot of schools had this kind of number to ask questions, including my undergrad. Though I don’t think they go back 70 years.

A popular question was “how many severed heads can fit into our stadium” and a couple of kids reasoned it out.

Vaslo··on What happens at the end of 'Trading Places'? (2013)
I thought that was actually in The Distinguished Gentleman and had to confirm but you are right. Don’t know why I misremember that.
Vaslo··on Indian court orders blocking of Proton Mail
Not reductionist at all. A country so steeped in corruption that even all its natural advantages (lots of English speakers, big population, low wages) can’t compete with China. They (their government specifically) needs to get their act together in the 21st century.
Vaslo··on Instant SQL for results as you type in DuckDB UI
I moved from pandas and SQLite to polars and DuckDB. Such an improvement in these new tools.
Vaslo··on Elon Musk shut down internal Tesla analysis showing Robotaxi would lose money
This article is more Musk bashing, but I’d like to add that this is very common in companies private or public, large or small.

CEOs and/or senior leaders get ideas stuck in their head and it becomes apparent that no amount of analysis is going to change it. Then the product/expense is more of a “we’re doing this, how do I do it the least risky/least expensive way.”

This isn’t just products. I’ve seen examples at prior companies I worked for. It’s for getting that additional jet (we got a 3rd jet, all calcs and opinions was definitely unnecessary and barely used) or putting in this additional massive plant in a non-union state to brag about how state of the art/no risk from unions we were (plant never hit anywhere near capacity just like prior analysis showed, waste of money and eventually sold at a loss.) That said, there are lots of examples where projects and products did work where analysis failed them.

This is where CEOs can steamroll their boards, especially when they are also the Chairman.

Vaslo··on 7k-year-old skeletons from the green Sahara reveal a mysterious human lineage
I’ve been enjoying a podcast called Our Prehistory. If you are interested in this kind of stuff, the first few episodes get really into this, and it’s definitely sunk some misconceptions I had about evolution (that other species groups lived among the Homo Sapiens), why they died out, more branches than originally thought etc.
Vaslo··on Louisiana prison board uses algorithms to determine eligility for parole
Thank you for creating a textbook strawman argument to share
Vaslo··on ChatGPT can now remember and reference all your previous chats
Agree - it gets stuck sometimes and it just gets time to start over
Vaslo··on A guide to reduce screen time
This is the best of HN comments. Engaging article engages a bunch of folks to share their own ideas and improve the lives of other readers. And no politics, yay!
Vaslo··on A guide to reduce screen time
This is a great point. It’s talked about in a book called Indistractabke. The author talks about trying to get rid of his phone during the day and even moving to a flip phone. But other nonsense just takes its place.

It’s essentially like being a dry drunk. You need something else to replace the alcohol or you just trade alcoholism for something else.

Vaslo··on Let's Ban Billboards
People like you say this until the other party is in power, and bans stuff you don’t like, then you will cry about free speech too.

I won’t die on the hill of saving billboards anymore than id die on the hill of not taxing billionaires but sorry, whats fair is fair.

Vaslo··on I maintain a 17 year old ThinkPad
I have one of these that was a tablet and touchscreen from my mba program in 2008. I still have it and put some version of Linux command line only (peppermint maybe) and it still works. Haven’t touched it in a few years.

Honestly was never that impressed by it and have had to replace the fans on it multiple times but it’s still kicking while other laptops are not.

Vaslo··on Tell HN: Announcing tomhow as a public moderator
I will assist in reporting brigading leftist commenters. There are many of us that want to see politics out of commentary when unnecessary.
Vaslo··on RIP Val Kilmer: Real Genius .. the Film Nerd Culture Deserves (2015)
Real Genius and Wargames made me want to do science for a living.
Vaslo··on Shared DNA in Music
Wasn’t this Pandoras original claim to fame - that they used 30 or 40 different aspects of music to categorize music and help you find what you liked?
Vaslo··on Ask HN: Is anyone experiencing "AI brain rot?"
You are right, though I think some of it is our addiction to phones and such. BUT as a very mediocre coder llms have really accelerated my ability to code. I think I am the sweet spot for them. Much more experienced than a beginner because I know when to use classes, certain data types etc and can get the LLM to do what I ask and make changes when it’s crap. But not nearly good enough to construct algorithms in my head, which is probably a big advantage to an experienced coder and LLMs help to catch the rest of us up (though definitely do not replace.)
Vaslo··on Show HN: Xorq – open-source Python-first Pandas-style pipelines
Why go with Ibis over Narwhals? Just curious.

I really tried to work Ibis into my projects when I thought the native Ibis functions could be used until I went back to another tool like DuckDb or Polars, but I was finding Ibis couldn’t do some things. At that point it was either flip over to polars to do x, or just use polars.

Vaslo··on Debian bookworm live images now reproducible
This question should be at the top. I know HN tries to stay agnostic in their report of news but they definitely fall on the wrong side of feature vs benefit (as do most open sources authors ) and plenty of folks will just pass up this article completely ignorant of the benefit.
Vaslo··on A love letter to the CSV format
So easy to get data in and out of an application, opens seamlessly in Excel or your favor DB for further inspection. The only issue is the comma rather than a less used separator like | that occasionally causes issues.
Vaslo··on Video game workers in North America now have an industry-wide union

Vaslo··on Deep Learning Is Not So Mysterious or Different

Vaslo··on Show HN: Localscope–Limit scope of Python functions for reproducible execution

Vaslo··on uv downloads overtake Poetry for Wagtail users
Switch to who?
Vaslo··on Show HN: Time Portal – Get dropped into history, guess where you landed
Ignore the AI comments, this app is so much more flexible with it, and the pictures will only get better. Great idea for an app!
Vaslo··on The DuckDB Local UI
Duckdb and polars have changed my Python development completely. Great packages that can work together, excited to see this.
Vaslo··on An election forecast that’s 50-50 is not “giving up”
You’re delusional if you think the media kowtows to him. I’m not even going to post sources, a quick search will show even left leaning sites saying the overwhelming reporting is negative about him.
