Vaslo··on 56k.rip – the 1996 dial-up internet experience
A lot of people don’t know how cool it felt to dial into the internet or a service like Compuserve or Prodigy and suddenly have this whole world open up to you. Even at 56k.
Vaslo··on Have Another Drink! Govt sponsored study on alcohol doesn't stand up to scrutiny
You messed up your link.
Vaslo··on MicroLLM Lab – Try 7 tiny LLM's in the browser

Vaslo··on 13 Months Sober (2025)
The term for folks who fail to do what you’re saying is “dry drunk”. It’s a good indicator you’ll be returning to alcohol.
Vaslo··on Show HN: HN.watch – Videos of all Hacker News posts
This is great - many of us who are technical but not working in hardcore tech probably scroll by quickly on stuff we have never heard of. Getting a quick synopsis like this may drive more traffic and understanding.

Thanks!

Vaslo··on Owed a billion dollars in Nvidia stock
If you’ve exercised them, you’ve essentially bought the stock at that price and own it. Most people just sell them right away because they’re more interested in the payment on the difference between option price and current price. But you technically could exercise/buy it and just hold.
Vaslo··on DeepSeek Elastic Compute (DSec)
That number of authors though
Vaslo··on Transformers Explained Visually
Could have been the cars that turn into robots for that matter
Vaslo··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
I’d rather have a defense system over space junk.
Vaslo··on Grok 4.7
No, we don't
Vaslo··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
Other than the rare books than have been ruined, all the same knowledge is still out there though. So it’s not robbed in the sense of a bank heist. Maybe in the sense of pirating a movie.

The markup is the millions in training they committed and the connecting the knowledge. Seems like a reasonable trade off to me. You can choose not to use it though.

Vaslo··on OpenJev
Your question makes me think of the last scene in the movie Night of the Comet.
Vaslo··on Hister: A private search engine for the pages you visit and the files you keep
It's really great you've done all that work for importing from other apps - I use Karakeep and at first didnt know how much redundancy I have between the two, but now I am going to try this since I have so much of it already setup.
Vaslo··on Cherenkov Radiation
It can happen with minimal radiation
Vaslo··on Pandas Should Go Extinct
I use polars or duckdb now exclusively. Better syntax, better performance. But pandas is deeply entrenched - I try to get my team off it but it’s an uphill battle. It’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
Vaslo··on Stop Omarchy
The site is already down lol
Vaslo··on Resist "AI"
All I’m seeing is mediocre or inexperienced coders executing at a similar level to traditional coders, with traditional coders not liking it. Im guessing this is similar to any situation where new tech replacing old tech, and old tech potentially empire building to protect themselves with articles like “resist the helpful new technology!”
Vaslo··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
I feel like we never get real data on autonomous cars as we never do with data centers. It’s hard to tell if bad stories are anecdotal or rooted in truth. I hear the vast majority of accidents would be things that no human could avoid either - but then I’d also be anecdotal.
Vaslo··on Among European Companies That Use a CDN, Nearly 9 in 10 Use Cloudflare
This is all in your head. We just expect people in Europe to begin picking up more of the tab for things like NATO, and don't want our enemies (your enemies if in western/central Europe too, BTW) to get control of future energy/minerals. You call it "aggressive colonial control", Americans call it "time for Europe to accept more financial and personal responsibility.
Vaslo··on Tesla killing Solar Roof is leaving installers with six-figure losses
Clearly it’s very expensive and people aren’t paying for it.
Vaslo··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
Who?
Vaslo··on Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns
Mastodon is an utter mess. Between that and censorship, we will just stay on X.
Vaslo··on Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns
I guess if that’s how you have to make yourself feel better about the worlds first trillionaire and his success after success, have at it.

Streisand effect only works when everybody is against the person being Streisanded. In this case many folks support Twitter and will work with them to get the links taken down
Vaslo··on EVE Online moves to Python 3
I’ve played off and on for years - even multiple accounts, lots of hours, and a very helpful org, there was too much to do, and I quickly felt overwhelmed. I just can’t imagine them getting many new players, but it’s clear the game is 20+ years of upgrades and content.
Vaslo··on Show HN: How much of Hacker News is AI?
I tried to click on the link at work and it got blocked as "pornography".
Vaslo··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
Because Millions of people including myself love the app, and we're not Nazi's last time we checked. We just disagree with leftism.
Vaslo··on Bookshelf – Self-hosted eBook library that runs on object storage
Have you done calibre web or others? How does it compare?
Vaslo··on Omacom Foundation funding hits $10M
I’ll bet some of this money will benefit Arch.
Vaslo··on Omacom Foundation funding hits $10M
Not if you see the ridiculous codes of conduct projects like Gnome and Nix have - many were begging for an alternative path and DHH brought it. Congrats to him for delivering on it!
