VanTodi··on Ask HN: Who is using MCP in production?
I don't know if it counts as production, but I use it for my task tracking, as well as a web GUI. When talking to Claude and working on a plan for a feature, I tell it to cut the tasks into small tickets and write it to my selfmade Ticketboard.

My phone's AI assistant can talk to it too, so if I remember a task mid walk out in the sun, I can just talk to it and it can write it down.

Awesome tool! I gave it a spin last night and it worked surprisingly well. But apparently the AI had a different rotation view on the item as the stl browser preview? i tried to make a bottle-holder with the opening on top (which makes sense) and the whole element was rotated 90° to the side. i tried verifying with the AI and it said the opening was on top in their view when crosschecking against my screenshots. was this a error on my side or did other have that too?
VanTodi··on Good sleep, good learning, good life (2012)
We are living on a Farm. So we have a huge main building where the aunts and grandma lives and we live in a different building. Kids can just run over, since it's no road in sight and everything. I feel rather blessed
VanTodi··on Good sleep, good learning, good life (2012)
In my area there is a saying like "it takes a village to raise a child". i believe that a good social network is not only important for the kid, but for the parents too. it helps so much to have a partner, grandparents, aunts/uncles, who can look over the kid just for a hour or 2, so you can get your rest. And its usually fun for the kids too. Now that i have 2 kids, a loving wife and 2 families around me, i have the highest respect for all the single moms/dads out there.
VanTodi··on What is jj and why should I care?
Guess he was talking about the presentation, not what the tool can achieve. It has no hard proof on the first page, which could easily just be a LinkedIn pitch, but not on hackernews
VanTodi··on An AI Vibe Coding Horror Story
since its a .ch domain, i believe its in swiss. In germany we have our DSGVO (GDPR), and you can report it too. If a breach happen, you have to inform all your customers. if its a first time and you tried to your own best, the punishment is not that hard, but since these are medical infos they should have known better.

Lets really hope they learned from their mistakes

VanTodi··on Show HN: Apfel – The free AI already on your Mac
Just a small thing about the website: your examples shift all the elements below it on mobile when changing, making it jump randomly when trying to read.
VanTodi··on Verification debt: the hidden cost of AI-generated code
I've come to the point where I think generated code is nothing better than a random package I install. Did I read it all and just accepted what was promised? Yes Can it bite me in the butt somewhere down the road? Probably, but I currently at least have more doubt about the generated code than a random package I picked up somewhere on git which readme I just partly skipped over.
VanTodi··on Why your website should be under 14kB in size
Another idea maybe would be to load the heavy library after the initial page is done. But it's loaded and heavy nonetheless. Or you could create svgs for the formulas and load them when they are in the viewport. Just my 2 cents

The very first video was of a toddler doing their first steps. I don't know any of them and had no clue where they are from. Someone just wanted to share their magic moment and after 15 years, I was involved.

The internet truly can be a marvelous place.

Just uping the Font size for the interactive stuff shouldn't eat to much bandwidth. The rest can stay smol.
VanTodi··on Impacts of lack of sleep
in 2 months she has no excuse anymore. as a father of a 1 1/2 year old, i can relate to you. i wish you all the best.
VanTodi··on I digitalized Berlin's registration form
to be fair, it's way easier now to do your taxes (as a private person). We can do it completely online with no paperwork involved and its actually quite alright. so some innovation is happening, even in the public sector.

what happens in the company is another thing. it really depends on the people working there.

VanTodi··on Bitsummit 2023: Steam Decks everywhere, no VR, and impressive indie games
Most Games have comfort settings Like Teleportation, Fading etc. My wife gets motion sick pretty fast with VR, but reading a book while driving is no issue. It's rather strange to me
VanTodi··on Bitsummit 2023: Steam Decks everywhere, no VR, and impressive indie games
IMHO the entry to VR is for most people to cumbersome.

- you should try it first to check how bad your motion sickness gets when playing. If you have it bad, all your bought VR equipment is unusable.

- you need specific hardware for it which (mostly) only works for gaming (and maybe porn). Putting 400+ bucks into the hardware for that sole purpose is to much for most people.

- you need a dedicated place for it. You can play it sitting down, but that's not even half the fun of VR.

I have a VR headset myself and really like it, but even for me it's a hustle to free up the space and set everything up for a session. I rather pick up my steamdeck and play wherever I might be.

VanTodi··on More than 75% of Steam games tested are playable or verified on the Steam Deck
Maybe you were one of the unlucky ones and got the loud fan. They switched to a much quieter fan in the newer machines.

You can try to replace it with some parts from ifixit or somewhere else.

I refunded my first too because it was just too loud and I didn't had the right situation for it.

Now one kid later and a newer deck with a silent fan, I'm very happy with the deck again.

VanTodi··on Show HN: Automating daily reports, because fuck it
Had to do something similar in my company. We had to write how long we worked on a projects and what the task was. This was due every month and of course I only did it at the end of the month. It was all already planned and everybody knew what was being done, it was just an annoying layer on top that took hours. So I made a script that listed my git commits, searched the Jira ticket associated with it and gave me the tags in those tickets. The art of being lazy amirite
VanTodi··on Former Dolphin team member addresses Steam/Valve’s takedown of Dolphin emulator
"it's easier to provide the software to steamdeck user this way instead of 'sideloading' it"
VanTodi··on This blog is hosted on my Android phone
Ubuntu touch supports some old phones you can buy used. It's technically not a android phone anymore, but it's possible. I tried it on my oneplus 6 and I worked, I'm just not ready for the ecosystem yet
VanTodi··on Now offering 2TB SSDs for Steam Deck in the Framework Marketplace
I used ThinkPads before too and swapped to tuxedo books now. They make laptops specifically for Linux and even provide software updates etc. For Linux. I'm quite happy, but it's more expensive.
VanTodi··on Announcing Masonry 0.1, and my vision for Rust UI
I really hope you succeed. Sounds like it's a missing part of the eco system and your plan and thought sounds great to me.
VanTodi··on Announcing Masonry 0.1, and my vision for Rust UI
So it's the vision of a single person and another UI library is being born. I'm being sceptical at this, cause it looks like the same problem with JS and all the frameworks: I can't find anything that has all the features I want, so I start a new one, which potentially never becomes stable. I'm not a Rust developer (yet) and have a background in PHP and JS, so I'm glad if some vets can elaborate on the GUI problem with other programming languages.
VanTodi··on CarSized: A way to visualise car dimensions
Sadly no marauder in the selection. Would love to see the comparison
VanTodi··on Documenting software architecture with arc42
Can confirm that it's a great framework. We use it in all our Team and just having the same structure is a great start. It's a bit tedious the find the right place for the information in the beginning, but overall we are were happy with it
VanTodi··on CAD files for the external shell (surface topology) of Steam Deck
I'm hyped for a long time and apparently you can install whatever you want. It's just a very small computer. Steam has a history of working on tho support of Linux gaming, so I think Ubuntu should be no problem. Edit: they even release a docking station for the real desktop PC feeling
