Valord··on Show HN: Free Plain-Text Bookmarking
Is this possible with tooling available today?
Valord··on How web bloat impacts users with slow devices
This, although I often feel near modern web frameworks (React, similar) do not provide better developer experience.
Valord··on Show HN: GodotOS – Fake operating system interface made in the Godot engine
What does low latency have an effect on, productivity?
Valord··on Shoelace: A library of web components
Can you please elaborate on what this means ?
Valord··on In 2024, please switch to Firefox
Also checked LinkedIn, no issues in FF on a mid-2014 mbp.
Valord··on Show HN: Cami.js – A no build, web component based reactive framework
I just nope out of the Shadow dom in lit to get external css using createRenderRoot. Mentioned here https://stackoverflow.com/questions/55400222/how-do-you-use-...
Valord··on Show HN: Cami.js – A no build, web component based reactive framework
I use pure no-build lit for the "interactive islands" the repo describes. Nice to see others have the same idea even if we're not taking the same approach.
Valord··on Why Is the Front End Stack So Complicated?
I have been totally happy with aspnet core razor templates and regular 'ol javascript when interaction is need in the FE. If/when I need to get fancier Lit (lit.dev) is on my radar.
Valord··on Ask HN: Why did Visual Basic die?
Vscode supports many enthusiast development stories.
Valord··on Nginx Unit – Universal web app server
My previous company ran quite a bit through asp.net running in Linux docker containers in k8s etc. I hardly consider it extremely rare.
Valord··on De-cloud and de-k8s – bringing our apps back home
Agreed. I was having similar feelings reading comments.
Valord··on This is the year of the RSS reader?
Lol I see what you did there
Valord··on This is the year of the RSS reader?
I have been using feedbin since Google Reader was killed. No regrets, I happily pay for it.
Valord··on Rclone is 10 years old today
Rclone is great! I used it in a CI/CD pipeline to sync a files from a git repo to S3 for CDN distribution.
Valord··on Rclone is 10 years old today
No, while it supports a number of big-box cloud provider storage systems it also includes smaller providers and various protocols. Protocols like HTTP, FTP, SFTP, SMB, local filesystem, and things like "S3 compatible".
Valord··on My Favourite Computer, an Old Mac
Thanks for mentioning this, fitlet looks neat.
Valord··on Ask HN: Is Ansible Still a Thing?
I still find Ansible compelling when I don't want to go full blown K8S. For example it's much easier to run a linux instance and use Ansible to move files and restart systemd hosting my web-app.
Valord··on To improve search results on YouTube, use the search prefix “intitle:”
I am building a webapp that pulls YT subscriptions, lets you categorize them, and view videos by those categories. I have been using it daily for ~6 months instead of visiting YT directly. Considering finishing the last 20% and charging a small monthly fee in the $2-3 range. Not knowing how to find users for it has led to much procrastination.
Valord··on Ask HN: MacBooks seems to be the only viable option these days
Another anecdote, writing this on a mid 2014 MBP that gets regular use. No issues.
Valord··on Ask HN: Do you watch streams (on Twitch, etc.)?
Short answer: nope. Long answer: I haven't found Twitch to be suitable as a platform and I think it's because I aged out of the demographic it is targeting. I have attempted to watch live coding streams, competitive gaming, casual gaming, and even some streams that my friends do. Nothing seems to keep me attentive. I find the chat is mostly flooded with nonsense. I'm impressed that streamers can interact well with a lively chat. In the off chance the streamer is doing something interesting to me - they'll interrupt it by interacting with chat.

Higher level you may want to focus on what a great educator does when teaching. A big part of being a good educator is understanding the different ways that people learn and accommodating for each of them. I think? If you can leverage Twitch's chat system to help groups that learn differently you might have more impact. (Personally I would want an educator to present ideas and get through fully-thought out concepts before taking questions and interacting with chat).

Valord··on Ask HN: Do you have a guide on how to use feature flags?
Check out some of the blog posts from https://launchdarkly.com/blog/
Valord··on Alright, amigo, let's build some affordable housing
I agree. On the odd occasion something interesting pops up as a Twitter thread I use an unroller. Much better UX.
Valord··on What are you doing, WordPress.com?
Also applaud.
Valord··on Ask HN: Why is Firefox losing marketshare and how would you save it?
My data point, FF has worked fine for me on MacOS and Windows for years.
Valord··on Poll: Why are people leaving their jobs?
The first part for sure. I raise the assertion that the feeling can be positive.
Valord··on Using HTTP Basic Auth in 2022
This is what I've been doing for simple projects, easy.
Valord··on PSA: uBlock/AdBlocks on Chrome to lose function thanks to Manifestv3
Firefox. I switched on all of my machines, MacOS and Windows, a few years ago and rarely have any issues. I was expecting it to be a rough ride based on what I hear around the internet but it was quite the opposite: seamless.

As with most things you'll hear comments on HN with both sides liking and hating it but I never experience the terribleness that comes from those that say it sucks. I also don't mind switching to Chrome when I absolutely have to.

edit: I also use FF on Android and I will admit it has a few more issues than it has on my PC, but nothing that is bad enough to make me use Chrome.

Valord··on Reddit Is Down
Very likely to see a post-mortem for the incident show up right here on HN :)
Valord··on I can only think that modern front end development has failed
I also want to know this.
Valord··on Do you really want Linux phones
Wouldn't other non-Google ROMS such as LineageOS be more popular than they are?
