VWWHFSfQ··on Airbus to migrate critical apps to a sovereign Euro cloud
Europe will just end up doing whatever is cheapest. It's the same story as always. They'll say some stuff publicly but they'll quietly come back to American tech once they see the price tag difference. They're very cost sensitive and their investors are extremely risk-averse.
VWWHFSfQ··on Mistral OCR 3
I think there is a lot of broad support, but they're just kind of hamstrung by EU regulation on AI development at this stage. I think the end game will ultimately be getting acquired by an American company, and then relocating.
VWWHFSfQ··on Canada's Carney called out for 'utilizing' British spelling
It's ironic that USA lost 60-some thousand troops in Vietnam trying to prevent a communist takeover, only for American companies just to enslave them all anyway. I wonder how different the dynamic with Vietnam would have turned out if it had been more of a Korea situation. USA certainly never enslaved South Korea.
VWWHFSfQ··on Rahm Emanuel says U.S. should follow Australia's youth social media ban
If that was actually true then states would have banned or blocked already. This is not a new issue and it has been challenged unsuccessfully many times.
VWWHFSfQ··on Rahm Emanuel says U.S. should follow Australia's youth social media ban
I feel like those laws are different because they specifically target pornography, which is seen as an evangelical moral sin. They would prefer to ban it completely, but that most likely runs afoul of the Constitution. So their next best bet is just to try to limit it to over-18s.

Obviously the end result is the same, but I think the motivation is different.

VWWHFSfQ··on Hunting for North Korean Fiber Optic Cables
It will definitely go down as one of the biggest failures of mankind. Especially since it was so easily preventable if MacArthur was permitted to just take the whole peninsula.
VWWHFSfQ··on EU Council Approves New "Chat Control" Mandate Pushing Mass Surveillance
This is such a weird sentiment and I see it often when talking about EU politics. Is this just how the European constituency feels? Just like beatdown citizens in a government they have no passion about and no control over?
VWWHFSfQ··on EU Council Approves New "Chat Control" Mandate Pushing Mass Surveillance
> restrict their first amendment rights

how is this relevant in the UK

VWWHFSfQ··on Tell HN: Happy Thanksgiving
Research what the Iroquois did to the Huron people, what the Apache did to the Pueblos, and what the Aztecs did to everybody.

The continent what a slaughter show for thousands of years.

VWWHFSfQ··on Tell HN: Happy Thanksgiving
North American natives were exterminating and enslaving each other long before the Europeans got there.

Nobody has anything to be proud of.

VWWHFSfQ··on APT Rust requirement raises questions
Is the apt package manager a pointless place? It seems like a pretty foundational piece of supply chain software with a large surface area.
VWWHFSfQ··on France threatens GrapheneOS with arrests / server seizure for refusing backdoors
> They successfully argued in court that being forced to insert code the government wanted would be equivalent to compelled speech

This isn't true, they never "successfully argued in court". There was never any judgement, and no precedent. They resisted a court order briefly before the FBI withdrew the request after finding another way into the device.

VWWHFSfQ··on France threatens GrapheneOS with arrests / server seizure for refusing backdoors
I seem to remember the FBI attempting to compel Apple to decrypt a criminal's iPhone, only for Apple to refuse and claim that it wasn't possible. I'm not sure exactly what happened after that. I think it was suspected that the NSA was able to do it by exploiting an unpatched zero-day. So they didn't need Apple's help anymore and the issue was dropped from the public's eye.
VWWHFSfQ··on Fast Lua runtime written in Rust
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like this is using the mlua Rust bindings (which are excellent). It's not a Lua runtime from-scratch in Rust. It's the regular C Lua/LuaJIT with a Rust interface.
VWWHFSfQ··on How a French judge was digitally cut off by the USA
It was signed in 1994? That's 30 years. I guess you're counting Crimea? I was think just starting from the full Russian invasion.
VWWHFSfQ··on How a French judge was digitally cut off by the USA
> We all know how much the security guarantees of that agreement were worth.

They were worth 30 years of peace. It wasn't a treaty. Everyone knew it was a handshake agreement without consequences for breaking it. It prevented an immediate war in eastern Europe after the fall of the USSR. A war that could have been much worse involving nuclear weapons.

Unfortunately the war came 30 years later.

VWWHFSfQ··on How a French judge was digitally cut off by the USA
> unless EU nations want to put boots on the ground.

Is such a thing even possible in the EU? I understand that it's an economic and policy bloc. Does Brussels have the authority to raise an army from EU members?

VWWHFSfQ··on Nano Banana Pro
There will be a model trained to remove synthids from graphics generated by other models
VWWHFSfQ··on Rust in Android: move fast and fix things
Sure, but at a macro level the approach is still to "rewrite" Android subsystems in Rust. Just slowly.
VWWHFSfQ··on European Nations Decide Against Acquiring Boeing E-7 Awacs Aircraft
It kind of sounds like the USAF did the EU countries a favor then. If they're not interested in the technology anymore then it prevented all those countries from investing billions in a fleet of lemons.
VWWHFSfQ··on Redmond, WA, turns off Flock Safety cameras after ICE arrests
Start at Boren Ave and walk down Pike Street. Film it.
VWWHFSfQ··on Redmond, WA, turns off Flock Safety cameras after ICE arrests
> The homeless encampment problem in Seattle today is roughly now back at the same level of problem we had 20 years ago.

See, this is wild to me. Seattle has a long-time notorious problem with Tent Cities and even now it's just completely normal. I remember The Jungle under I-5 at Beacon Hill was a big problem. I'm sure it still is.

VWWHFSfQ··on Redmond, WA, turns off Flock Safety cameras after ICE arrests
Walk from Pike Place Market, 1st and Pike, east up Pike St toward Capitol Hill. Count the number of homeless camps you see sitting on cardboard boxes in the middle of the sidewalks. All along Pike St, 3rd Ave, 4th Ave. And then count the number of SPD officers you see (ignoring the fanny-pack guys handing out naloxone). You'll get it.
VWWHFSfQ··on Redmond, WA, turns off Flock Safety cameras after ICE arrests
This sounds like the perspective of a beat-down Seattlite that thinks all the problems are just "normal". I lived there for a very long time, and have lived in several other major cities since then.

Seattle's problems are not "normal". And they should not be normalized by thinking this is just how it is. It is not that way in other places.

VWWHFSfQ··on Redmond, WA, turns off Flock Safety cameras after ICE arrests
Seattle is in such a tough spot. I lived there from 2001 to 2010 and left and then went back in 2018 or so and it looked like the homeless population had doubled, or tripled in the time since. And then I went back again after COVID and it was just sad. The entire downtown area is just homeless camps. There used to be a big beautiful Macy's department store on 4th Ave that's just all boarded up now. You can't browse around outside Westlake Center without being bombarded and accosted by aggressive panhandlers. Even the iconic Pike Place Market was overrun with druggies.

The entire city is so poorly run they just have no answers, and nobody can do anything about it. Pick something. Build more housing, do a basic income. Something, anything. But they can't. And their politics just let it keep getting worse and worse.

VWWHFSfQ··on Unexpected things that are people
It would be an interesting application of that principle, but I think it would lead to a rapid deceleration in medical research and advancement since the state of the art requires so much experimentation even at the clinical and practical level.

Research institutions and universities would dramatically reduce the amount of testing they're doing if they can't get any compensation for the shit they're throwing at the wall.

VWWHFSfQ··on Vodafone Germany is changing the open internet, one peering connection at a time
I don't find that it is usually even possible to have internet without power. How would that work?
VWWHFSfQ··on Lessons from Growing a Piracy Streaming Site
Yeah the whole endeavor was pretty pointless no matter how much the author is trying to glorify it as some kind of legitimate, special, important business.

Big "Our amazing journey" vibes with this one. Except the journey ended up in prison and all they have left to talk about is how proud they were to spam Reddit with pirate stream links.

VWWHFSfQ··on Study finds growing social circles may fuel polarization
You can have 10 "friends". 3 close ones. Anything larger than that and you are way out of your depth and can't possibly maintain those relationships in a meaningful, personal way.
VWWHFSfQ··on Harnessing America's heat pump moment
A heat pump just makes no sense whatsoever for me in my northeast town. The electric bill alone would outpace the old propane bill, not to mention installation.

And it won't even work during some of the coldest winter weeks when you _really_ need it to work.

Maybe I would consider it if I was in, like, Nevada or somewhere.
