VB6_Foreverr··on Driving Directions from Pakistan Military Academy to Bin Laden's Compound
Someday google will have a streetview of the most wanted with his face blurred out
VB6_Foreverr··on Driving Directions from Pakistan Military Academy to Bin Laden's Compound
The best place to hide is the last place you'd be expected to. Also when you hear of cases like the man in Austria who kept his daughter captive in his cellar for years and of Phillip Garrido in California maybe people shouldn't be so quick to assume the worst motives of the Pakistani authorities
VB6_Foreverr··on Kelly Criterion For Sport Betting
If the true odds are greater than 50% then you are more likely to win the bet than to lose it. So even if the odds given imply true odds far greater than 50% (ie poor odds) then you will still probably win money if you bet just 1 bet.

"Can I at least bring a tube of toothpaste with me when I travel now?"

Only toothpaste, what about your shaving gear? Maybe we shouldn't have any security at all, it's so inconvenient.

VB6_Foreverr··on Kelly Criterion For Sport Betting
The best strategy for this is to only do it for a limited period at large stakes so that your actual outcome is more likely to deviate from the expected outcome
VB6_Foreverr··on Kelly Criterion For Sport Betting
The minute in football where most goals are scored is the 90th (because it is often as long as 5 mins long). I remember where someone laid at huge odds (in running) a horse after Tony McCoy fell off only for McCoy to get back up and win the race http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcEjgnBXP40
VB6_Foreverr··on Kelly Criterion For Sport Betting
I wrote a program to calculate my kelly stakes based on supposed 'true' odds (ie no bookie overround) on English football matches. Maybe it would have worked out in the long run but I gave up owing to the effect it was having on my bank. I got my true odds from the Fink Tank column in the Saturday edition of The Times and bet on betfair for convenience and the ability to lay as well as back. I have no doubt that if your true odds are accruate it would maximise your returns. The hard part of course is estimating odds

VB6_Foreverr··on On Becoming a Math Whiz: My Advice to a New MIT Student
I am no math whiz but I did have one road to Damascus moment that helped me feel less daunted. Proofs of theorems can be very intimidating. With a lot of effort I might eventually be able to understand and reproduce a proof. However I'd think that the mind that could come up with such a proof in the first place must be orders of magnitude smarter as some of intermediate steps would seem so unintuitive. As in what possessed him to try that route?

But what you have to remember that what you're seeing can be the result of years of effort, trial and error that eventually gets tidied up into a narrative that's analagous to sticking your arm into a haystack and picking out the needle in one smooth action.

It would help people a lot if this was pointed out more by teachers I think.

It's not even that, it's KISS for users

I'd love to work at somewhere like fogbugz. Is there anywhere like it that accepts crap programmers?
VB6_Foreverr··on Why I, Jeff Bezos, Keep Spending Billions On Amazon R&D
I bought an xbox and a game for it at the same time from amazon. The xbox was fine the game disk was defective. I contacted amazon via my account, got a call from a human in less than a half hour (mainly I'd say to confirm the xbox itself was OK), received the new game a couple of days later and a refund of my return costs for the game itself. The only (very) slight quibble I'd have was that the postage on the return exceeded what they refunded. They made the return process itself simple by emailing me barcoded return labels and frequent reminders. I feel very confident buying off amazon a lot more so than ebay for example

VB6_Foreverr··on Poll: Display points on comments?
What would be an interesting experiment would be no points and no name displayed. Let the comment rise or fall purely on its own merits rather than the rep of its author. It seems to me that some people need only to cough to get karma

VB6_Foreverr··on IKEA's delayed gratification results in 60% impulse buying
I visited IKEA for the first time last week. I guess having all the names of items in Swedish is officially viewed as a feature. I think it's a bug as it's easier to remember a name than a (bar-code) number or a word you cant pronounce. I needed a set of a particular item which always come in 4s. When I got to the pickup area they were all loose, I assumed someone had opened a box so I picked up a sealed box went to the self-service checkout, scanned, paid and left. Hours later and 160 km away I saw that I had only paid for 1 item and had a box of 16. The barcode on the box was the same as the one for each item. Next time I'm there I'll take back the excess and pay the extra but I don't think it's entirely my fault so I'm not going to go out of my way to do a 300km round trip
VB6_Foreverr··on Celebrating 20 Years of Linux
I never knew Android OS was derived from Linux. If android is suitable for tablets is it only a matter of time before ubuntu is squeezed from its already small desktop share?

VB6_Foreverr··on Why Is It Rocket Science That Laws Should Apply Online Too?
Point taken. What people should say is "it's easy" or "it's not difficult".
VB6_Foreverr··on Android
I just got a cheap android smartphone for the equivalent of $100. I was afraid it might be crappy but I'm delighted with it. It has resistive rather than capacitative touch which aparently is not as good but you then don't miss what you never had. Imo the market works great though I've only downloaded freebie apps so far, chess, sudoku, google sky map. Glad I didn't fork out 5 times as much on an iphone. Google have done me a big favour
VB6_Foreverr··on Why Is It Rocket Science That Laws Should Apply Online Too?
Why do people use this tired old cliche. Surely it's not heisenberg debugging to come up with something other than rocket science (or brain surgery?)

VB6_Foreverr··on Learn to remember everything: The memory palace technique
There is another memory technique where each item is like a member of a linked list. Say you have to remember bread, milk and sugar. So you imagine a loaf of bread that when you cut a slice off a cascade of milk comes gushing out and topples a dam made of sugar cubes. Then you discover that you already have milk, so you alter the image to a colossal slice of bread crashing down onto the sugar cube dam. I'd like a technique analogous to this where you start with 52 cards in your list and as the cards are drawn from a deck they are also dropped from your list. It would make it easier to see what's left
