Ultramanoid··on Ask HN: Amazon Deliveries
Extremely densely populated though. Amazon orders are coming several times a day, every single day, all around us.
Ultramanoid··on Ask HN: Amazon Deliveries
Japan, and yes we are close. In fact we could get delivery in one hour if we chose, either at home or in the nearest konbini, of which there are at least a dozen within a 5 minute walk.

Still, getting a service we're not paying for. And it actually makes me distrust Amazon, since we've been enjoying the same service as a paying customer, for free and without an obvious explanation.

Ultramanoid··on The Huawei Disaster Reveals Google’s Iron Grip on Android
Mostly E-mail. ( We had mail in phones in Japan way before iOS or Android. SMS has always looked like a regression if you ask me. )
Ultramanoid··on The Huawei Disaster Reveals Google’s Iron Grip on Android
I use several devices, lately usually HTC or SONY. I run my own build based on a barebones cleaned up LineageOS ( no Lineage applications or many libraries ), just need the core OS and monthly security patches up to date. Applications are my own binaries, packages available through Termux, and from developers either through F-Droid, GitHub or XDA forums.

I only need LTE and very rarely WiFi, so Bluetooth and NFC if available on device are disabled and neutered. Devices are encrypted but hold no data other than that in use, all data is always kept on external encrypted cards, and those go up to a tera now, so no issues even with large, very large files. Makes no sense to me that people tie data to a device, be it laptop, smartphone, tablet or desktop.

The 'phone' part is just for emergencies; police, ambulance, that sort of thing. Otherwise even a mid-range device works as a fully fledged laptop substitute for me, can be my main computer, and has for years.

Edit : Most of what I use is open source, and no adware, spyware, analytics, or crash reporters anywhere on my system. The current software business model based on data mining needs to die. Also, a decent web browser does, and better, what 90% of so-called 'apps' do.

Ultramanoid··on The Huawei Disaster Reveals Google’s Iron Grip on Android
Does it reveal Google's iron grip on Android ?

Really ?

I'd say it rather reveals most users' unhealthy addiction to Google's services, without which, this whole thing wouldn't be the 'tragedy' and wake up call it's turning out to be for many.

I have used Android for a decade now completely Google-free and no one could pay me enough money to be tracked and to run pure spyware 24/7 at this point... I enjoy immensely having a laptop replacement always on, always with me, in my pocket. No use for Play Services, advertising companies data mining all I do at all times, or 27, 42 or 59 'social media' applications running to give purpose to my life and 'communicate' with my 'friends'...

File manager, web browser, terminal, editor, LTE... That's what I need or care about. I guess not many of us left.

Ultramanoid··on Foreign Minister Taro Kono to ask media to switch order of Japanese names
In Spain there are two last names, not a last name "with a space" between words. Traditionally paternal first, maternal second, although the law has changed to be able to use any order. Both must be present in legal documents or ID card, passport, etc.

It is a real pain for Spaniards living abroad. It is not a middle name, a two worded last name, or anything of that sort. Full legal name = First name + Parent A's 1st last name + Parent B's 1st last name.

Edit : As pointed out in another comment, a Spanish last name can be a two worded one, and a first name can be as well, and often is. So you could end up with for instance, a 5-word nightmarish José Carlos ( 1st name ) García ( 1st last name ) De Maestre ( 2nd last name ).

Ultramanoid··on Study Finds Ultra-Processed Foods Drive Weight Gain
There are people who eat literally the same meals every day, for years, and the opposite would stress them for a number of reasons. There was a recent article about it linked in HN too, I think ?
Ultramanoid··on Japan plans to create 10B 14-digit phone numbers with 5G era approaching
Same here, indeed. And for 3 decades too.
Ultramanoid··on Japan plans to create 10B 14-digit phone numbers with 5G era approaching
We exchange cards as a matter of daily interaction. The biggest issue is reading properly a name ( kanji ), not the other data in them.
Ultramanoid··on Japan plans to create 10B 14-digit phone numbers with 5G era approaching
Does anybody actually remember phone numbers these days ?

Edit : I do remember the half a dozen I use or might really need, and already feel like an outlier. ( And as pointed in another comment, they're already 11 digits each. Not that much of a difference. )

Ultramanoid··on Cats rival dogs on many tests of social smarts
I'm expanding on what the article already makes clear. Dogs have been intensely selected and bred, to the point of differing significantly from their ancestors, cats have not. As the article also says, cats have largely domesticated themselves. Humans have done next to nothing to change them, in absolute contrast with dogs. This is not an opinion, it is a fact. And it has nothing to do with intelligence comparisons.

The point is that the animals being compared, while considered 'similar' domestication wise, are anything but.

Ultramanoid··on Cats rival dogs on many tests of social smarts
That's a good point.
Ultramanoid··on Cats rival dogs on many tests of social smarts
There is a remarkable difference in the time period of human intervention, for one thing. Dogs for around 30,000 years versus cats for 9,000.

There are ten times more dog breeds than cat breeds, almost entirely due to humans.

I'm trying to find for reference a recent study of cats' genome [※] that also mentioned how today's house cat is not much different genetically speaking from primitive feral cats, whereas as already said, plenty of dog breeds have never even existed in the past and are completely a product of human driven genetic selection.

( There ARE cat breeds also a product of human intervention, of course, but not in the numbers and variety of dog breeds. )

Edit : May as well add, human selection of dogs has altered them in fundamental ways. Selecting for co-habitation, so they don't attack farm animals, but protect them instead. Selecting for intelligence, so they can obey specific commands. Selecting for strength, so they can pull and carry. Etc. Most selection done with cats has been purely for aesthetic reasons, leaving behaviour aside.

Ultramanoid··on Cats rival dogs on many tests of social smarts
Dogs today are essentially a human creation, through genetic selection and breeding, not so much domesticated as, for all intents and purposes, created. And cats, by and large, aren't.
Ultramanoid··on Cats rival dogs on many tests of social smarts
> Both cats and dogs are animals that have been domesticated by humans.

From the article : Dogs and cats traveled different roads to the human home: Dogs evolved from the social, cooperative gray wolf and are the product of thousands of years of intensive breeding and selection by humans. Cats, by contrast, descend from the fiercely antisocial and territorial Near Eastern wildcat, and they largely domesticated themselves, as the tamest cats began to hang out and hunt rodents in early farming villages.

Ultramanoid··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Android Firefox Browser?
Short answer; no. Everything else is based on Chromium, which is basically Google-sponsored spyware.

That said, try Bromite : https://bromite.org

Edit : Unclear from your question if you're aware that the problem was fixed -- just update to the latest version.

Ultramanoid··on More Spanish than Russians,English or Irish, know what is causing climate change
Not strange, as desertification, already underway and well-known by residents, will change large parts of the country according to climate models.

There is a Ministry of Environment, which in the Spanish original name is called "Ministry of Ecological Transition" [ to a decarbonised economy ].

Ultramanoid··on Ask HN: Firefox Users, Alternative Browser
Firefox is miles ahead of anything else when it comes to privacy.

That said, look into Ungoogled-Chromium or Iridium :

Both projects try to clean up the spyware that Chromium essentially is by design.

Ultramanoid··on Ask HN: If You Could Make Anything, What Would You Make?
Transporter, as in the Star Trek series. We're talking of particles these days, but let's get it done for people and objects.

Imagine the changes to society... Instantly visiting someone on the other side of the planet, or for that matter, shipping anything to and from a colony in another planet.

Ultramanoid··on Ask HN: Do you still use Antivirus in 2019?
Don't use it in 2019, just as I didn't in 2009, or in 1999.

Furthermore, have had to remove it from plenty of machines of non-techie people asking for support, where it was not only doing NOTHING to protect them, but also preventing their systems from working as intended.

Now, if you want to talk about uBlock Origin and the likes though, that's a good conversation to have these days about actually essential protection.

Times have changed. The biggest virus today is convenience.

Ultramanoid··on China’s vast fleet is tipping the balance in the Pacific
China can be many things, 'insecure' is not one of them. Maybe try 'patient'.

Edit : From a Chinese perspective, the Pax Americana has been a blip in history.
