Ultramanoid··on Reinventing Firefox for Android
These builds have been available and in development for months now. They are announced at this time for 'early adopters and developers' ( EXACTLY us ) and still not even a hint of add-ons, or any obvious / apparent interest in them from Mozilla.

The only way to use uBlock Origin and / or uMatrix ( which again, many of us argue are essential, on top of add-on development itself ) on Android today is Firefox. Yet there have been nothing but vague replies these past months about when development from Mozilla will pay any attention to this, arguably its biggest differentiator and advantage compared to the spyware army of Chromium / Chrome clones on the biggest platform accessing the internet today.

Wait until about:config is supported too ?

These preview builds have been available for months, not just a couple of days.

Nothing I or my co-workers can actually test yet in them.

No official statement about add-on support which should be at the forefront of development in any Firefox version, the best we get is vague replies about it coming later.

Ultramanoid··on Reinventing Firefox for Android
Tell me how am I supposed to test add-ons on this Firefox as a developer before the release then.

Edit : And again, most of my work if not all related to Firefox, I do on the Nightly build. I expect things to break, but this preview ( of which there have been builds for a while already ) is a non-starter.

Ultramanoid··on Reinventing Firefox for Android
I am a developer and spend half my work time in Firefox Nightly. This is not usable for me despite being exactly the target for this preview.
Ultramanoid··on Reinventing Firefox for Android
Like others have said, uBlock Origin ( or solid alternative; uMatrix, etc ) at this point is a prerequisite for any browser.

I am not testing something that puts me in danger and throws me into the festering garbage dumpster that internet is these days without it. It's like testing a car that doesn't have brakes yet.

Ultramanoid··on Ask HN: Can we create a new internet where search engines are irrelevant?
This is what we had in early internet days, directories of links. Early Yahoo was the perfect example of this. You jumped from one site to another, you asked other people, you discovered things by chance. You went straight to a source, instead of reading a post of a summary of a site that after 20 redirections loaded with advertising and tracking gets you to the intended and actually useful destination.

Most web sites then also had a healthy, sometimes surprising link section, that has all but disappeared these days.

Ultramanoid··on A Chinese invasion of Taiwan would be a bloody, logistical nightmare
Short answer, a declaration of independence means war with China.

The status quo allows for what are effectively two separate nations to keep face and avoid disaster -- for both. It is a unique and somewhat absurd state of affairs for sure.

Long answer is... Long. Probably reading on the history of China and what happened after the Communists won the war and the KMT retreated to Taiwan would be a good starting point to understand what's going on with Taiwan today.

( Edit : https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20263049 )

Also, no country in the world can have official diplomatic relations with Taiwan if they have them with China. ( Most do unofficially. ) Taiwan is consistently blocked by China from international organizations starting with the UN, etc. Not everything is as it should be in a 'truly' independent nation, with the status quo. A declaration of independence would therefore also affect every other country and the international order of things.

Ultramanoid··on A Chinese invasion of Taiwan would be a bloody, logistical nightmare
> evidence...

It seems so obvious to anyone in touch with Taiwanese society it didn't occur to me the need to provide it, my mistake.

http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/front/archives/2016/05/28/20...

Identifying as a Taiwanese only does NOT equal support for independence, by the way. Things are not that simple.

And beyond issues of identity, the vast majority of Taiwanese, however they identify themselves, overwhelmingly support the 'status quo', meaning no declaration of independence, no reunification. No one wants war, which seems assured with either of those two options.

Edit : Just seeing now that the article claims 51% for independence, but that can't be right, maybe a typo, both independence and reunification are always on the extremes, shifting anywhere from 10 to 25%, and status quo is consistently the preferred option by far.

Ultramanoid··on A Chinese invasion of Taiwan would be a bloody, logistical nightmare
Every decade, and it's been several now, the proportion between the population that considers itself Chinese-Taiwanese versus only Taiwanese shifts closer to only Taiwanese. It is 'inevitable' as well that as more generations live and work in a de facto independent nation, 'reunification' becomes an impossible objective for the mainland, unless force is used.

No need to look farther than the Sunflower movement when the previous Taiwanese president ( from the KMT ) tried to build stronger economic ties with China. The young movement literally occupied government, and on the next election the DPP swept to power.

Ultramanoid··on Get your fax right: Bungling officials spark nuclear scare
You can send / receive faxes from konbini ( tens of thousands of stores open 24/7 ) as well, not even needed to actually own a fax machine -- I don't, but have to use the service a few times a week.

Edit : I can only confirm the relatively widespread use of it in Japan to this day, not sure what's the reasoning behind it myself.

Ultramanoid··on Ask HN: Why are so many HN readers anti-crypto ?
Great fan, student, and user of, cryptography.

Not a fan at all of resource wasting speculation schemes for no good reason whatsoever, that I wish would stop being called 'crypto'...

Ultramanoid··on Ask HN: Protecting yourself, your chidren, from food?
※ Children.

Too late to edit the typo now, sorry about that.

Ultramanoid··on Ask HN: Protecting yourself, your chidren, from food?
I'm asking a general question, everybody is affected in some way or another, and no country is spared.

For instance see the multiple articles recently posted to HN about how microplastics are present even in the air we breathe, or in water in very remote, 'unspoiled' locations.

Edit : I'm interested in what others do, specific actions, like buying organic produce, avoiding tuna, filtering water, etc.

What things they do, how often, why, etc.

Ultramanoid··on Request HN: Something nice for reaching 1000 karma

Ultramanoid··on Japan's commercial whaling to restart July 1 after 3-decade hiatus
I agree. It is not common at all in most of Japan.

My own anecdotal experience, but for reference, I believe horse meat is orders of magnitude easier to find and consume in EU countries than whale in Japan. And yet I'd argue most Europeans wouldn't consider horse meat common at all.

Ultramanoid··on Japan's commercial whaling to restart July 1 after 3-decade hiatus
There is little political opposition to the present government, which explains why a leader with such lousy support among the population at large ( Abe's administration has been riddled in corruption scandals almost non-stop, and has been hovering between a 30% and at best 50% in polls ) is about to become the longest serving Prime Minister.

The opposition is fragmented, weak in all respects, hasn't had a plan when in power, doesn't have one now, was mercilessly attacked when in power because of their handling of Fukushima among other things, and people have no real choice when it comes to voting.

Yuriko Koike took Tokyo Metropolis by storm and raised the prospect of a strong alternative political force to the ever in power LDP and the broken opposition, but then quickly fizzled out and renounced national ambitions.

This new whaling push seems to be just a political statement from the Abe administration, in essence.

Ultramanoid··on Japan's commercial whaling to restart July 1 after 3-decade hiatus
Don't have any specific figures, don't know. There isn't that much whale to deal with to begin with, it is highly regulated as already explained in another comment. We'll see if this whaling 'restart' brings changes to that -- or if it even lasts.

Seems like political nationalistic posturing from a government that's done a number of things in this regard, more than anything else. There are no real economic ( or gastronomical ) reasons to it that I can see.

Ultramanoid··on Japan's commercial whaling to restart July 1 after 3-decade hiatus
> Japanese consider cetaceans just another fish.

And Japanese are short, can't speak English, too ?

We don't eat whale at home, never have, nobody we know eats whale, neither can you see whale on display as a matter of course around you in Japan. Sure, you can find it if you want it. Also, even children as a rule can usually explain what a whale is, and how is different compared to, say, tuna or mackerel. Schools are a wonderful thing.

That said, your other point is quite apropos on the massive hypocrisy in general when it comes to meat and fish consumption.

The horrific process that brings chicken or beef to people's plates would be something to consider way before looking at whaling.

( Edit : Not vegetarian or vegan, by the way. )

( Edit 2 : And for clarity's sake : Not in favour of whaling for any reason, myself. )

I wonder how children growing up with this sort of thing will think of human interaction, and how it will differ from our generation in that regard.

Ultramanoid··on Taipei to ban smoking in front of convenience stores, coffee shops
It's toxic, literally.

I'm shocked when I visit EU countries. They are quick to regulate anything and everything, from fuel to food to drugs, and in contrast with the U.S. they act on the premise of something needing to be proven safe before authorizing it, as opposed to the need to be proven harmful to be banned like in the States.

Yet you see people smoking everywhere in streets and cafes, even young parents pushing a stroller with one hand and smoking with the other.

Some cities' streets are literally covered in carpets of cigarette butts. Paris, Rome...

Ultramanoid··on Taiwan's Press Freedom Best in East Asia: Freedom House
While any Taiwanese will be quick to remind a foreigner of the significant political differences with China, it probably has much more to do with the so called White Terror era :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Terror_(Taiwan)

After the transition to democracy, the Taiwanese of the last few decades recoil from anything that even slightly reminds them of that violent oppression in their recent past.
