Uchikoma··on There's a coffeeshop called java.update() in GTA V
He was bashing a programming language - you call it Enterprise Java - for laughs and karma, not seeing languages as tools you can use based on your judgement. I hope we once will grow beyond bashing.

[Edit] And this is the highest voted comment on a thread about how cool GTA V is to include programming references and how deep their open world is.

Uchikoma··on There's a coffeeshop called java.update() in GTA V
Language bashing is what characterizes our industry.

I have the dream that one day we will recognize languages as the tool they are and be mature enough to chose tools by utility and not by hype, hipness or pop culture and see there benefits and limitations.

Uchikoma··on Deciphering the Business Card Raytracer
Nice!

We did a real time raytracer with 2 spheres where you could move around one with C and a cluster of DEC Alphas 20 years ago, funny to see this on my laptop in Javascript (!) now.

Elop was placed to hit the ice berg, he did, mission accomplished.
Uchikoma··on DivX Now Installs Malware
I have a very high opinion of PG

But he's not objective if topics touch Y-combinator startups¹, the same happened during the AirBnb PR disaster.

¹ and when he talks about programming languages ;)

Uchikoma··on [dead]
In German there are two words - perhaps in English too.

It's "verliebt" and "liebe/lieben". The first is in the beginning, the second after some time (although people will tell you they love you "liebe dich" from the beginning, while in reality they are "only" "verliebt"). When dating you are usually "verliebt" I think. Some fall on love with being "verliebt" and then split up again and again.

Uchikoma··on To my daughter's high school programming teacher
Thanks. The gender of a poster seems very important to you. It's not important to me.
Uchikoma··on To my daughter's high school programming teacher
I'm feeling sorry for the daughter.

The poster is hard to take seriously, one mention of the harassment ("sandwiches"), at least three times he mentions "Visual Basic? Seriously??". He seems more concerned about language wars actually.

So many people confusing programming and programming languages - the act and the medium.

On top the "(violence and rape references)" that had nothing to do with the incident of the headline "To my daughter's high school programming teacher".

This is a disservice to all people who work on more gender equality in tech.

[Edit: As pointed out, it's a she. Thanks for pointing this out. Sorry for over reading this, I usually don't care about the gender of a person. Yes I've read the article very fast as it is 90% not about the headline]

Uchikoma··on PayPal Freezes Mailpile Campaign Funds

Paypal: If you presale we might freeze your account
  Merchant does presale
  Paypal freezes account
  Merchant: Why you did that?
Uchikoma··on PayPal Freezes Mailpile Campaign Funds
Or you could read the terms of the business relationship with PayPal:

  Am I allowed to presell?
Yes, you are allowed to presell items as long as you follow these guidelines.
  Off eBay presale requirements
If you sell items in an online store (not eBay), you must guarantee delivery
within 20 days from the date of purchase and make sure that the customer
knows they are buying a presale item.
  [...]
If you are selling goods or services in an online store (not eBay), you may
be allowed to presell items but we may hold your money in a reserve
account or limit what you can do with your account to reduce the higher risks
  associated with presale items.
Or as the ruder ones of us said in the 90s on Usenet: RTFM.

Uchikoma··on PayPal Freezes Mailpile Campaign Funds
You're right, but then there was no PayPal when PayPal reached their size, so the situation now seems different to me.
Uchikoma··on Geeking Out on the Logo
Love the boldness. Going against flat is bold - and ugly.

It reminds me of a book I had in the 90s which showed 5-click Photoshop tricks, there was a golden bevel trick in there (and marble, and shadows, and stamping).

Uchikoma··on How not to check the validity of an email address
1.) Yes, the article was about choosing the right approach for validation

2.) I urge developers to step back and think about the requirements they get. Concerning those I would have thought what validity in this situation means, e.g. light validation in JS, send validation / validation list on the server etc.

Uchikoma··on How not to check the validity of an email address
For me it depends on what "validity" means.

1.) Prevent typos etc. Regex or Mailgun or Kicksend is enough. 2.) Prevent bounces, prevent wrong signups one needs to do double opt in.

Uchikoma··on 29% of Bay Area's particulate air pollution comes from across the Pacific (2010)
"Riding a bike vs driving actually causes more pollution (because farms make lots of pollution) [unless you replace exercise you anyway do with bike riding]."

This is a very interesting point, do you have some numbers to back that claim? Food production costs, car production, oil production etc.?

Uchikoma··on Tesla Model S achieves best safety rating of any car ever tested
Tesla S is an excellent car. Loved it when I sat in one.

What came to light in Germany some years ago, with a heated discussion, is that automotive companies seem to optimize their cars towards specific tests. The discussion raged around what tests are more realistic, with those that let the car makers look bad (foreign tests) being "not realistic".

Uchikoma··on Don't Comment Your Code - Write Better Code
I'm a proponent of self documenting code (method names, variable names, immutable variables etc) but this only helps document the WHAT and sometimes HOW but seldom the most useful WHY or WHY NOT or what I have tried before this and what didn't work so I changed it.

Astonishing as it belongs to the same foundation as Germanys Aldi, and Aldi is not known for it's people management.
