USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on Are We Anti-Cheat Yet?
>It’s just the best trade-off (for all parties, especially gamers)

I fail to see how pimping out my PC to code that no one can verify is a good deal. The takeaway is, have a separate hardware to play games on and don't let it touch anything private?

I agree with the rest of the comment though.

USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on Vulnerabilities show why STARTTLS should be avoided if possible (2021)
With the amount of air conditioners and coffee makers (et al.) connected to WiFi I think lapses in correct separation is more frequent than anyone would be willing to admit. Maybe not too practical to hijack a TCP stream, but still worth to remember if anyone claims to be protected by NAT.
USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on The gigantic and unregulated power plants in the cloud
>they want their panels to be accessible when they are outside their home

I call bullshit. They've been conditioned to think that they want it, because all product brochures have it.

What kind of tangible benefit could there be to know how bright the sun is at your home while you're not there? A cool party trick to virtue signal or a break between doomscrolling, I suppose, but it's not like you're gonna jump up and drive back to... what even could you do if you knew?

USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on Video with Alpha Transparency on the Web
Video compression may only cause issues at the edges due to chroma subsampling, in which case bleeding chroma to transparent pixels would help. All other cases would be errors in the pipeline, such as incorrect gamma handling, wrong supersampling implementation, or mixing up whether content is premultiplied or not.

Also premultiplication is just a way to cache the multiplication operation:

    // using normal image
    // note that everything after the plus depends entirely on the image
    out = current * (1-img.a) + vec4(img.r*img.a, img.g*img.a, img.b*img.a, img.a)
    // using premultiplied image
    out = current * (1-img.a) + img
Which might make sense if you're drawing same bitmap very many times.

GIF only has binary transparency. Period. Also GIF is only lossless if you don't care about file size (using multiple 0 duration frames with different palettes trick) or material is limited in palette.

From my testing VP9 videos with transparency are fine if you aren't stingy with bitrate, and in general if source material isn't CGI things will be crusty at edges anyway (e.g. greenscreen with motion blur).

I don't think your private files being accessed remotely is a very desirable experience.
USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on Stop Killing Games
You're making grandiose claims that are obviously uninformed.

"This petitioner" Ross Scott is fighting remote kill-switches in games. Here's a recent video, but listening in should be enough https://www.accursedfarms.com/posts/dead-game-news/dead-game... Even if the outcome of all of this is merely correct labeling, it will be a win in his view.

What's important is setting a precedent that no, it's not fine to take money for something that will only work until a box somewhere in the world is turned on if you won't say how long you will keep that box on.

GIFs are warts. There's no way to stop them, so they endlessly demand your attention.

Are you actually trying to equate sociopaths to emergency services?
USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on Ask HN: Why are PWA user install stats so hard to find?
Oh, and you omitted that you need to scroll down the share popup. A popup that primes you as scrollable sideways, don't forget.

When my family was discussing getting an older member a smartphone, I briefly thought about it and realized that the whole lore of what's srollable would be impossible to explain. If you don't want a feature used, put it "below the fold" in a popup.

USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on Mandatory speed limiters on EU cars from 2024
Oh believe me I read the second scenario several times.

For the first one it's "blatantly obvious" that you should just stop overtaking if someone is being hostile against you. Even if you have a rally cross situation behind you, the physics works out to be safer if you abort.

Second one is rather confusing, but it would appear that this driver of D having realized intentions of C decided to brute force the situation with speed, making driver of A to solve everything again with even more speed.

This mentality of speeding just ends up amplifying until something gives.

Two wrongs don't make a right. If everyone around you is driving like a maniac you shouldn't try to best them.

I know that HN is not one person, but this is getting out of hand. Some commenters are so upset about EV sounds they write petitions to have them banned, others swear that pedestrians fall dead from their sheer quietness.

Maybe the EVs adapt to local regulations, because from my experience, depending on the model, they sound like a sad harmonica, hurdy-gurdy, or a model fighter jet, all of which are quite entertaining but fulfill the function.

USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on Mandatory speed limiters on EU cars from 2024
Even though this scenario is suggested quite often, it doesn't make it good. Overtaking does not grant you a permission to speed. Also, while it's probably easier said than done, you should not succumb to the sunk cost fallacy and simply use the other pedal at your disposal.

I'm not a motorhead, so I only skimmed second hand part offerings and found this: OEM Maserati part number 670006946. For optics it's advertised as noise cancellation system, but owners' forum [0] suggests it can work either way. They also discuss a defeat mechanism.

These are results from the first page. Not an endorsement.

From the descriptions it's unambiguous that these add-ons are not pumping 100dB into the car's interior.

Yes, you are missing something. Query for your favorite search engine is "active sound exhaust system". This is how it affects me.

USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on Microsoft breached antitrust rules by bundling Teams and Office, EU says
It is (was?) much worse than that. Last time I was forced to attend a Teams meeting roughly a year ago I used Firefox. The UI greeted me with two grayed out toggles informing that neither video nor microphone are usable. Out of morbid curiosity I enabled the responsive tester mode which, amongst other things, allows you to temporarily set the user agent string. I looked up one for Edge, grabbed the first I could find, reloaded the page, and... it worked. Joined the call with full features.

You can not convince me Microsoft isn't an evil company.
