USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on Congress fights to keep AM radio in cars
Would it be also odd if feds said that a house must have a smoke alarm during its sale? Both of these items you probably wish to never be thankful to.

Also, in grand scheme of things, AM tuner is probably a fraction of a dollar. Optimizing it out is weird.

PIT maneuver is not a T-bone. Even if you cut across a lane (from C to A) there won't be enough of lateral velocity to make it potentially deadly. That's one the of the major points of roundabouts.

With the insane amount of investment put towards appeasing cars [sic] I think it's just a matter of prioritizing.

USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on Why Apple Uses JPEG XL in the iPhone 16 and What It Means for Your Photos
Well, I assumed Exif and embedded color profile would have been expressive enough for this. I do agree I'm a bit out of my depth when it comes to raw photo data but Exif seemed to have properties for everything, even counting the kitchen sinks in the image.

USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on Cobb Tuning Hit with $2.9M Fine over Emissions Defeat Devices
Quite ironically, turbochargers remove a big deal of sound from exhaust, because the energy is extracted back to do useful work. Otherwise it would be emitted as noise pollution, which some sociopaths cherish for some reason. I believe exhaust systems can (and most likely are) acoustically tuned to do similar thing by fluid dynamics too.

By that train of thought alcohol and tobacco were harmless until nasty bureaucrats came along and demanded that things must be explicitly labeled. Website operators are anything but blameless.

Could you perhaps muster up the courage to clearly substantiate what you're criticizing? These terms "government", "regulation", "lawmakers" come off as dogwhistles. It's not like evil Ursula von der Leyen walked up to the blue lectern and said websites now must present a dialog with one button before you can look at the content.

If you're talking about GDPR, then it regulates that businesses have to have reason to store and process PII. I don't see a reason to be unhappy about that.

USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on Diesel shop fined $10M for making and selling Emissions Defeat Devices
I would like to see this myth tested.

From my experience even reasonably priced cars have decent enough noise insulation. Exhaust pipes face back. Inverse square law means the radio has to do very little work to be louder. All this added up you'll only hear the noise terrorist as they're lane splitting next to you.

This is the stupidest discriminatory hurdle that ought to be regulated ASAP.

USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on How to make a table row a link (2020)
Using inspector I threw together some divs and styled them using the aforementioned CSS property values and it definitely works. Columns work, and it even responds to table-layout: fixed! You only lose the ability to use rowspan/colspan attributes but that's about it.

I was thinking about posting it but checked ARIA recommendations to figure out what additional attributes would be appropriate. It strongly recommends against switching interactive elements (a link) to non interactive (grid row). For example, this doesn't validate:

    <!DOCTYPE html>
    <html lang="">
    <head>
    <title>Test</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    <div role=grid><div role=rowgroup><a href=#frag role=row>test</a></div></div>
    </body>
    </html>
I'd be inclined to agree, just leave links inside of table cells.
USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on How to make a table row a link (2020)
Not mentioned:

    display: table;
    display: table-row-group;
    display: table-header-group;
    display: table-footer-group;
    display: table-row;
    display: table-cell;
    display: table-column-group;
    display: table-column;
    display: table-caption;
I'm not sure how cursed this is for screen readers. It certainly feels less evil than JS solutions.

USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on Did Sandia use a thermonuclear secondary in a product logo?
The "quads only" rationalizations come off as quite cargo-culty.

Sure, edge rings won't have dead ends, and that's useful when adding edge loops to increase detail, but doesn't necessarily mean the topology is of high quality. Using only quads some cursed helix type topology can be constructed.

First thing subdivision will do on non-quads is ortho(1) operator, so a nice averaged vertex in the middle will be added. High side count cylinders will have weird saddles around caps, but that's due to subdivision being wrong tool for the task.

Quads can be abused to look bad too. If a mesh looks bad, it's a bad mesh. If animated mesh looks bad, it's bad rigging and skinning. Knowing "this one industry secret" won't fix those.

USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on Porting systemd to musl Libc-powered Linux
Yes, but, as the name implies, only once, and selectively at runtime. If you have a service and issue sv once on it, it will not be restarted, but its configuration is not changed so it will run normally after system restart.
USiBqidmOOkAqRb··on Porting systemd to musl Libc-powered Linux
Yet systemd doesn't have an equivalent to runit's sv once. Also, everything's so opaque that I can't figure out why nftables ruleset isn't loaded on boot, but systemctl restart works correctly (all on Ubuntu 24 server without any kind of frills added).

This is a poorly explored avenue. I think a lot of these more advanced APIs ought to be permitted to "installed" PWAs. Maybe it could even look like permissions menu for apps in phone OSes.

I was a bit dismayed when mozillians in the bugtracker dismissed the idea of requiring consent to initialize WebRTC. F'k it, scan the local network.
