UIUC_06··on Ex-OpenAI board member reveals what led to Sam Altman's brief ousting
Oh no, it's the HN police again. Everyone duck and cover!
UIUC_06··on [dead]
It's so important to stay grounded.
UIUC_06··on Daniel Kahneman has died
Kahneman was a giant among men. Anyone rattling on about "the replication crisis" probably isn't fit to carry his folders.
UIUC_06··on She Wanted to Make Her Frank Lloyd Wright House Greener
Oak Park in the 19th century was not quite as urban as it is now.
UIUC_06··on Apple to EU, Drop Dead
You say The Law as if it's something magical, come down from Mt. Sinai.

Instead of the political decision of a bunch of unelected Brussels would-be "elites" which would never pass a general referendum. If they ever had such things, which they generally don't.

Would we call a rule that "phones must have a USB-C connector" The Law? No, it's just lawyers with too much time on their hands.

UIUC_06··on Apple to EU, Drop Dead
> the law
UIUC_06··on Apple to EU, Drop Dead
This became a meme because it's true.

World: We're having a global party!

China: We'll bring the hardware!

U.S.: We'll bring the software!

EU: We'll bring the lawyers!

UIUC_06··on Americans are spending billions on stuff they forget to cancel
Recent story: I had Duolingo, for some reason I've forgotten. They sent me a "we are about to renew" message.

So I went there and cancelled my account, and they even sent me a "sorry to see you go" message. They definitely got it.

Then they went and charged my card anyway. But it was declined, because I'd closed the privacy.com virtual card I'd given them.

That's why you do this.

UIUC_06··on The Weight of New York City: Subsidence from Anthropogenic Sources
According to Snopes, the mass of the water held back by the dam (39 trillion kilograms, or 42 billion tons) is sufficient to change the rotation of the earth:

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/china-three-gorges-dam/

https://interestingengineering.com/innovation/13-facts-about...

So why is this being downvoted, when the subject is ground subsidence from man-made structures?

UIUC_06··on Predictive policing software terrible at predicting crimes
NYC is a little bigger sample than Plainfield, NJ:

https://ccnmtl.columbia.edu/projects/caseconsortium/casestud...

UIUC_06··on One robber baron’s gamble on railroads
Not original quote:

If the government ran the Sahara, within five years there'd be a shortage of sand.

UIUC_06··on Covid patients breathe out large amounts of virus early on
27 years ago, there was a movie that perfectly shows that mindset:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114323/?ref_=fn_al_tt_5

If it wasn't covid, it'd be something else with people like your friend.

UIUC_06··on The fall of Stack Overflow, explained?
> unfounded attacks and accusations

it's "founded" because you are all over this topic, and it's legitimate to ask why.

UIUC_06··on The fall of Stack Overflow, explained?
So are you getting paid by SO or something? Are you one of these moderators everyone hates? Why are you so all over this?

SO has built up a toxic reputation over many years. And yet somehow, according to you it's false? Why don't you just let this one die? You can collect your paycheck from SO now; you've done your bit.

UIUC_06··on San Francisco Airbnb bookings plunge as city battles bad press
Or you could try responding to the fact that a 60-40 election result doesn't happen because of a few advertisements.
UIUC_06··on Fractal Vise
Since you've used this repeatedly: it's spelled "vise" not "vice"
UIUC_06··on San Francisco Airbnb bookings plunge as city battles bad press
Proof that someone can't think well: when all they can say is "racist" and "dogwhistle."
UIUC_06··on San Francisco Airbnb bookings plunge as city battles bad press
Funny to see the lengths some people will go to spin the news their way. It's just a flesh wound! I've had much worse.

"questionably skewed interpretations of city statistics" -- LOL. Who you gonna believe, me or your lying eyes?

"It was all the pandemic!" Right, right. LOL again.

Boudin lost by 60-40. Face it: it wasn't propaganda from big money; people just hated him. The DA does, indeed, have the "privilege" of deciding who to charge; what bail to demand, if any; and what plea deals to make; and that's why George Soros poured so much money into DA races all over the country. If the DAs were just automatons no one would bother.

UIUC_06··on The Rise and Fall of CORBA (2006)
There's the idea, and then there's its execution.

You're saying someone else's successful (and partial) execution of an idea somehow validates the original failed execution.

UIUC_06··on Titan sub vs. refugee trawler: how much is a human life worth?
Didn't Stalin say (roughly), "One death is a tragedy. A million deaths is a statistic" ?
UIUC_06··on Brazil develops tropical wheat and predicts self-sufficiency in 5 years
> You're lying and you're not even very good at it

educate us: how can he become better at lying?

UIUC_06··on Tony Hsieh and the Emptiness of the Tech-Mogul Myth
Pick almost any music hero or sports champion and there's your lesson about too much money too early. There is no lack of those stories already.
UIUC_06··on Are We Close to AGI?
oh, I beg your pardon. You did say "very few of them have been in the trenches with ML (not just using, but designing and building the actual architectures, working on theory, or writing cogent philosophy about it) long enough to have good opinions about it worth listening to."

I thought you meant that your opinions are worth listening to, unlike the other HN'ers. Are they not?

UIUC_06··on Are We Close to AGI?
Gene Wilder meme:

Tell me all about how your opinions are better than everyone else's!

UIUC_06··on The AI PR Industrial Complex
Big question: will AI last longer than spiral croissants? I vote Yes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAbPaWosphk

Yesterday morning, I saw a line of 15 people waiting to get into a bakeshop that apparently has them. LLMs take a little more time & investment than spiral croissants.

UIUC_06··on What is it like to be a bat? (1974) [pdf]
No need to define it or prove it. Just assume it.
UIUC_06··on Whistleblowers are the conscience of society, yet suffer gravely
James Clapper needs to be cuffed and perp-walked in front of the TV cameras, for so many things besides this.
UIUC_06··on The flop that changed Apple forever [video]
indeed, the Mac building (on Bandley) famously had a "pirate flag" flying over it.
UIUC_06··on Dark Patterns in Substack
I figured "dark patterns" must mean "a lot of people I don't like are publishing there."

But no. A trivial complaint that's easily handled in any of a dozen ways. This isn't the late 90's anymore.

UIUC_06··on San Francisco could collapse – what should California do about it?
> the one city that's supposed to be theirs

LOL. Since when?

SF existed in the 1850's. There was no such thing as a tech bro then.
