Two4··on Baffling purple honey found only in North Carolina
A bit of digging, and it turns out there's a Coca-cola bottler in Aberdeen, the same area as Dees Bees Apiary. I'm willing to bet that purple honey coincides with grape Fanta spills or dumps
Two4··on Baffling purple honey found only in North Carolina
any soft drink plants in the area? A bottler near where I used to stay got caught dumping out expired flavourant packs when honey in the area started turning red.
Two4··on How Beef Tallow Made a Comeback
The same applies for plant oils though. Only high value oils like olive oil are commonly shipped packaged and debulked.
Two4··on Why hasn't anyone built a receipt tracker app to verify restaurant tips?
Is it not commonplace for US banks to send a text notification for card transactions? In my country, this is considered table stakes when choosing a bank card or credit card.

Two4··on How often are children genetically unrelated to their presumed fathers?
In the grand scheme of all social issues the UK is beset with, this is small potatoes. It's not hugely important, it's just hugely important to you because it's an emotional issue.
Two4··on Anime fans stumbled upon a mathematical proof
You seem well versed in anime - can I give you a few math proofs to work out?
Two4··on Grad School Is in Trouble
Academia has been in trouble for a while, what with the exploitation of PhDs and postdocs and low wages - they can't attract or retain the necessary talent. This will just accelerate the decline.
Two4··on Antidepressant use among teen girls and young women has skyrocketed (2024)
What makes you say that teenage girls are the most chemically imbalanced group?
Two4··on How often should you poo?
If you've exhausted possible causes, you might want to consider nuking your gut flora and getting a stool transplant from a healthy donor
Two4··on Taiwan detains Chinese-crewed ship suspected of cutting undersea cable
What's the motive for Taiwan to cut Baltic Sea fibre cables?
Two4··on Brazil justice orders ban of video platform Rumble
Cookie banners are not mandated by law, disclosure of and consent to tracking and capturing private user data and its sharing to third parties is. Cookie banners are just the easiest UX pattern to slap on to an existing website, and lends itself to dark patterns so users blindly click "accept all". There's multiple browser extensions that exist that will automatically opt you out and you never have to see those cookie banners again.
Two4··on Declaring a National Energy Emergency
As a warning to US citizens: this is similar to how state energy production and regulation was captured in my country, leading to massive corruption. A crisis was whipped up, and emergency powers were given to key individuals in the energy supply chain. These emergency powers were used to enrich certain companies and politicians, and exacerbate the energy shortage to perpetuate the need for emergency powers. We are still recovering from this, near a decade after the scandal was uncovered. Watch how this declaration of emergency will be used to enrich certain parties in the US, and possibly abroad (despite the emphasis on domestic energy).
Two4··on Ask HN: Why is Cursor IDE accessing all my env vars?
Using env vars for secrets has become semi-normalised because of container-based development and deployment. It's okay-ish in the limited context and scope of a container, but it's not good at all in a host OS or VM context. Some dev practices have leaked through, possibly because it's an approach that works in all environments even if it's not best practice
Two4··on When your last name is Null, nothing works
Afaik, there does exist a decree in most teams at MS to not use null if it can be avoided, and any attempt to do so is likely going to be flagged in code review - or so I'm told.
Two4··on Ask HN: Opinion on efforts to find prior art on outrageous priced drugs
Jean-Pierre,

This is an internet forum. Structuring your replies like an email is entirely too formal and comes across as stilted. Please feel free to treat it like a text message thread.

Two4··on Show HN: Immersive Gaussian Splat experience of Sutro Tower, San Francisco
Kinda makes you wish there was a massive earthquake while everyone was safely tucked away at a Beyonce concert in an earthquake-proof stadium.
Two4··on "Uber for Armed Guards" Surges After UnitedHealthcare CEO Assassination
I've organised security for tourists wanting to film in sketchy neighborhoods, and this app would have been much easier. Gig work makes up a surprising amount of all jobs for VIP protection firms, so this seems like a natural progression.
Two4··on "Uber for Armed Guards" Surges After UnitedHealthcare CEO Assassination
They (VIP protection outfits) tend to recruit former law enforcement into their ranks so they can maintain connections that allow them to skirt the law
Two4··on "Uber for Armed Guards" Surges After UnitedHealthcare CEO Assassination

Two4··on 'You've Blown a Hole in the Family': Inside the Murdochs' Succession Drama
The best quote I've seen to explain this is from the Men in Black movie: a person is smart, but people are dumb.

Group dynamics and identity politics are massively underestimated by many as motivating forces to get people to act against their interests.

Also remember: half of all people are below average intelligence.

Two4··on Meta's job cuts surprised some employees who said they weren't low performers
No - underperformance is relative to a benchmark, be it based on a median plus a set percentage or a set percentile. Only one person can take the top spot in a rank stack, which makes it a poor model for performance measurement. Overperformance is nice, but not sustainable for the majority of employees.

Two4··on French train passenger fined €150 for using phone on speaker
Tinny cellphone speakers play noisy, low-fidelity speech audio captured with a mic that's likely clipping and compressing the caller's voice (audio-wise, not data-wise, although that too is happening and likely doesn't help). Actual people speaking is broad-band, has full fidelity and dynamics, and is directional and context sensitive
Two4··on DARPA solicitation for the Active Social Engineering Defense program (2017)
You've made a diagram showing statistics of immigration encounters, and from that you deduced that prisons are being emptied into the US? Bit of a stretch. The diagram is nice, but you're missing the point: the picture being painted for you that you're trying to prop up is false.
Two4··on DARPA solicitation for the Active Social Engineering Defense program (2017)
Turn off Fox News dude - you're severely lacking perspective of your own country. Everyone outside of the US media sphere(or rather spheres - there's two) laughs at your news media and how entrenched misinformation has become.
