TrueGeek··on Goodbye Xamarin Forms
I've been a Xamarin.Forms developer for a while and I'm a big fan of the framework.

The author has a point that Android support has always lagged iOS support, but I've not had problems to the point that they have. Xamarin is great for business apps, and can definitely be performant on both platforms.

TrueGeek··on Amazon Kindles with 3G will start to lose cellular network access in December
I was also offered $50 but you have two weeks before the coupon expires. This seems extremely short considering they must have had a ton of time to prepare for the cellular shutdown.

Plus, if you go to their site to buy a new Kindle it says you get $50 + 20% off if you trade in your old Kindle. Customer service told me I can't combine offers (plus trade in takes a couple weeks anyway) so it seems the $50 offer is worse than what normal customers get anyway.

TrueGeek··on Normal People Beginning to Acknowledge Their Loss of Free Speech on the Internet
He added this update:

> This articles was "flagged" by Hacker News about 90 minutes after I posted it there

I regularly get HN posts in my RSS feed that end up being flagged when I click through to them, but this url has only been submitted once from what I can tell. Plus, even if it had, adding "flagged" to the title of a post is far from censorship.

I'm not sure why he thinks HN is removing his posts.

TrueGeek··on Peter Thiel Has Accumulated $5B in a Roth IRA
> Thiel turned $2000 into this amount

Is there a history of what trades he made and over what period? A $2k investment to $5B is insane.

TrueGeek··on Unemployment declining faster in states that are cutting off $300 benefits
> until we can automate enough so that there's such a thing as a free lunch

This is a wonderful Asimovian ideal. Alternative future: we automated many people out of jobs and they are left in the cold because we don't prioritize re-training and social services.

TrueGeek··on Many people don’t want to work unless it’s from home
It is insane that recruiters send stuff like "WFH 2 days a week!!!". I had one a couple years ago that offered a "perk" of casual Fridays. They have no sense of the real world and what it takes to hires developers.
TrueGeek··on Irish police to be given powers over passwords
From the article:

> "Irish police will have the power to compel people to provide passwords for electronic devices when carrying out a search warrant under new legislation."

This is not unique to Ireland, we see this here in the US as well.

TrueGeek··on Tylenol isn't so safe, but at least it works?
If you haven't seen a Neurologist in the last 18 months, there have been HUGE advancements in prescription drugs for migraines. Prior to 2019 drugs for epilepsy were given off label. Now there are monthly injections (you give them to yourself at home) that are specifically for migraines and target the CGRP:

Note: I only vaguely understand the science, talk to a neurologist.

TrueGeek··on Tech Interviews Are Stupid
> Long trial contracts to hire

I don't understand these. If I'm going to do this (as a candidate) then why not just do independent consulting / contracting and charge a higher rate?

Only once was I offered a contract to hire and I assumed it meant the hiring manager hadn't yet secured the FTE req. When I asked for clarification he just said "that's how we do things here". I explained that a significant portion of their pitch was spent talking about their stellar benefits when they were trying to recruit me and now I wouldn't receive any of those. He said I'd get those in 6 months. I took it as a red flag and passed.

TrueGeek··on Hacker Accessed AWS for $50k+ – AWS Ignoring Me
It's still crap though. If they spin up an instance billing $1k a day you'll find out after they've already billed several hundred, if not at least $1k. There needs to be a way to set actually limits, not alerts. You should be able to say "I'm not using this service, the limit should be $0."

Of course, if OP didn't have MFA / let their keys leak this may not have helped anyway if the hacker was able to just remove the limits.

TrueGeek··on Ask HN: What's your keyboard and what you love and hate about it?
same, after having issues with pain for a while I love how little effort the Apple keyboard takes to press the keys. I just wish the Magic Keyboard came in black.
TrueGeek··on A problem repeatedly occurred with Safari 14.1
A bit off topic but I just want to thank you for such a great site. Just this morning I had been linked to it for a travel diary of LEJOG.
TrueGeek··on .NET MAUI: .NET Multi-Platform App UI
Same. OP says "going to die soon" of a framework that's been around for 9 years and is being invested in heavily. I've been working on Xamarin projects for years and have done very well with it.

Doing consulting I've done plenty of projects in React Native and played with Flutter a bit but Xamarin really is a great framework.

TrueGeek··on Tech Tent: Bye-bye Silicon Valley, hello global workforce?
This is very accurate. I'm in the US eastern time zone but working with teams in the Pacific time zone, IST, and CEST constantly. My employer cancelled all of our leases when everyone went home so we're now all remote 100%, but that doesn't really change anything about having to work remote.

Embracing async communications is the key. If I send you a message at 3am just reply when you are ready. If I need a real time meeting I can schedule it, but that's rare for developer communication.

TrueGeek··on Out of prison after 30 years and people telling him to find forms on the web
Very true. For 99% of cases I would guess they're dealing with expats who didn't get a check or have a question about medicare coverage.

The example they give of an emergency is "a 12 year old needs to have a social security number issued". I think social security numbers are issued at birth now, so I don't think it comes up often. (Coincidentally I did need to have mine issued very quickly at 12)

But, to OP's point, there are services that are indeed moving to "online only".

TrueGeek··on Out of prison after 30 years and people telling him to find forms on the web
> Government services are available offline or via phone as well

The US Embassy FBU in London has recently switched to email only. They no longer accept postal mail. [1] The FBU handles social security related matters for those out of the country.

You can visit in person only for urgent visits with an appointment which they point out are limited. [2] They no longer list a phone number of their site so appointments must be made through email as well.

Their territory reaches very far from London so in person visits for Americans in South Africa means event urgent requests are email only.

TrueGeek··on How a shadow army of ghost kitchens took over America’s restaurants
My wife and I used to go to a great little restaurant near us. The owner sold and the food drastically got worse. The previous owner spent every single morning at the market picking out fresh meat and produce. The new owner told us her lawyer said that was a liability. They switched to Sysco because they guaranteed the food was safer then buying directly from the growers.

TrueGeek··on Food delivery startup Wolt raises $530M
I've been a Prime member since it came out, but lately it's just been awful. Packages will say "delivered" but then either the photo is of someone else's porch or there just isn't a photo. I have their Ring doorbell and I offer to show them no events were triggered. They always say "oh, we must have marked it delivered too early, please wait 48 hours". Then, 48 hours later they offer to refund me and I have to start over. I've asked if they can please only deliver via UPS but they say that's not an option.
