TrickyRick··on EU Chat Control Bill Postponed
There is no "pirate party" in France? I've found them to be the only privacy minded parties these days sadly.
TrickyRick··on EU Chat Control Bill Postponed
Figma Initial release date: September 27, 2016

Sorry, disqualified according to your own arbitrary rules.

And regarding AI startups there's about a bazillion of them in EU, just as in the US. Sure, ChatGPT was invented by a US company but you can't really claim that there's "nothing" in the EU. Just because you haven't heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

TrickyRick··on Stop EU Chat Control
Considering they keep racking up fines I seriously doubt it. It's become like banking regulation, fines are just a cost of doing business and you just have to factor in the percent chance of getting caught times average size of fine vs revenue.

Mandated USB-C was good, swappable batteries that's coming in a few years as well. GDPR was mostly useless and the only real consequence is more cookie banners that people accept as a knee jerk reaction and a lot of money that went to lawyers and "consultants" which helped smaller businesses get "GDPR ready".

Chat control is not really tech regulation though, even if it affects tech the proposal is written by people who have no idea what the fuck they are doing. Ylva Johansson (The MEP responsible for it) has even said straight out she has no idea if or how this should be complied with but "They will figure it out" (They being tech companies). With people like that deciding our laws of course you end up with shit like this.

According to that same page the trend is also moving worryingly upwards (Utvecklingen sedan 1990).

So to answer the OP's question (Instead of trying to cheat by answering a completely different question) it's about 2x worse now than 10 years ago. The fact that we were once on this level before is completely irrelevant.

TrickyRick··on The Concise TypeScript Book
jQuery is a bit of a poor example in the context since most of the stuff jQuery provides HAS been integrated into the standard making the lib obsolete. If the ES standard introduces types in a good way that will of course make TS obsolete.

Ah I see! Might be US exclusive. Anyway the VPN solution works well in all countries.
TrickyRick··on Altstore: Home for apps that push the boundaries of iOS
You mean the feature literally called YouTube Premium Lite? ;) https://www.youtube.com/premiumlite

Another option is to just VPN to Turkey when setting it up (Can be done with a UK account and UK card) and then it's about $1.5/month.

Hardly, every other video is filled with "This video is sponsored by Shit Company X". This is what Sponsorblock solves.

Like the other person wrote we switched from a home-rolled system to LaunchDarkly.
TrickyRick··on Show HN: We built an open-source LaunchDarkly alternative for B2Bs
Most companies are not in the business of building UIs for rule engines, A/B-testing, user segmentation, etc. The value of giving non-engineers the power to roll out features without code changes is worth quite a lot.

(Where I work we recently went from a home-rolled feature flag system similar to what you described to using LaunchDarkly)

TrickyRick··on Near-miss between FedEx and Southwest flights in Austin
This is like saying "I don't wear my seatbelt because I've never been in an accident". Safety systems isn't about one or the other, it's about having multiple systems and procedures in place to prevent a disaster. Proper procedures are good, and it's a first line of defense, but humans make mistakes and are imperfect in other ways (Such as not being able to see through fog). Proper procedure in the case of near 0 visibility would be to greatly increase separation between planes, something which wasn't done in this case, and something which would slow down traffic a lot more than passengers and companies like.

We've learned the lesson once already that not having ground radar is a bad idea.

TrickyRick··on 3M to end 'forever chemicals' output
Even the most environmentally conscious person in an industrialized nation will emit massive amounts of CO2 in their lifetime, provided of course that nobody invents a "quick fix" for CO2 emissions in their lifetime. Of course in theory the child could be that person to invent that quick fix, but the expected value is still that the child will contribute to a lot of CO2 emissions.

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, the whole list is banks.
TrickyRick··on Wells Fargo Penalties Since 2000: $22B
Maybe the statement should rather be "most banks racking up billions in fines are too big to fail". Wells Fargo certainly is.

TrickyRick··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
Free speech applies to all speech, not just political speech. If you want "free speech as long as it's legal", this should be allowed. If you don't that's also fine, but then you can't cite "free speech" as a reason to reinstate Trump (Which Musk did). Although regardless neither of these is a "free speech" issue (In the constitutional sense) since it's about a corporation banning certain things on its platform, which it's perfectly entitled to do. It's just very clearly shown the hypocrisy with which Musk now runs Twitter.
TrickyRick··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
So privacy protection only applies to the rich?
TrickyRick··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
It's possible to do great things and still be a terrible person. I know some people might find it hard to believe but it's also possible for people to change as they age/get richer/get more powerful/get less powerful/get poorer etc. Elon 10 years ago isn't Elon today.
TrickyRick··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
I heard some people walked in to a big building in DC after Trump tweeted which later got him banned. Imagine if it was your building! Or does free speech only apply to things Elon likes?

The press made a big thing of them using "emojis in a chat app" (Presumably Slack) for approving expenses. I wonder if they actually used Jira?
TrickyRick··on My IDE is too heavy so I moved to Emacs
Today you can usually customize everything anyway. And if you just want the default setup from another editor there's probably a plugin for that. I remember when moving from Eclipse to IntelliJ a long time ago I brought some of the most commonly used shortcuts into IntelliJ. I then later moved those with me to VSCode and still use them today, took me a maximum of 30 min to configure ONCE so I really don't understand the author's reluctance to configure that in a new IDE.

And also the money's gone (Probably). It's not like he has tonnes of money hidden away like other rich people on trial, so even if he gets bailed out by being buddies with the right people, it's not like he will make billions in campaign donations again any time soon.
TrickyRick··on The United States of America vs. Samuel Bankman-Fried Indictment [pdf]
I'm impressed it took a whole 33 minutes for this to be linked!

Yep, it was a way of getting more managers to the same number of engineers. Granted it was only 1 org so maybe they were just bad, but I had one line manager and one (Or sometimes multiple) project managers. The project managers compete for engineer time, which is supposed to be managed by the line manager allocating you to different projects. In reality nobody wants to say no and it was very easy for project managers to lowball project estimates thereby squeezing people in on 2 or sometimes even 3 projects at the same time.

"How you manage your time was up to you but the spreadsheet says these 3 projects will fill 40 hours a week, if it actually takes 100 hours maybe you're bad at time management" was a pretty common attitude from managers. I didn't stay long and neither did anyone else who had even the slightest talent.

The company was a major telco in a European country, so not a small startup with growth pains but a proper enterprise org with several thousands employees.
