This was awful in Fallout 4, but a lot of fun with friends in Fallout 76
TranquilMarmot··on A mysterious kidney disease has arrived in Texas
I assume that they do not have regular access to medical care, especially if they are immigrant workers.

Anecdotally, I have chronic kidney disease that would not have shown up on routine bloodwork / urinalysis. Only after multiple acute episodes did I get a biopsy for a diagnosis, and even that took a year of bouncing between specialists in a big city with good healthcare.

TranquilMarmot··on Creating backup storage sucks
What cloud object storage do you use? I went with Hetzner because I was optimizing for price.
TranquilMarmot··on Creating backup storage sucks
Right now, I just restore everything to a new folder and make sure that I can stand up Immich, Forgejo, etc. again and point it there and have it working. DB backups for Immich are handled automatically, but for Forgejo I had to write a custom script that does a dump of the DB every night. I'm not sure I could do a partial Immich/Forgejo restore since it would be missing so many files.
TranquilMarmot··on Creating backup storage sucks
I have a server in a closet with a few hard drives attached to it. All of my devices connect to it via Tailscale.

I use the wonderful https://github.com/garethgeorge/backrest as a web UI around restic.

Every night, I back the data up to a Hetzner storage box https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-box/ which is only ~$3.50/mo USD for 1TB of data.

I have three "tiers" of data for myself:

1. Important things I care about: these go into a folder that gets backed up to Hetzner (examples include photos in Immich, code pushed to Forgejo, etc)

2. Smaller files I sort-of care about: these usually just go into Proton Drive (examples include design documents)

3. Large files I don't care about losing: these go into a folder on a hard drive that is not backed up (examples include media)

This took me about a day to set up and I just check in on it every once in a while. Once a year I will do a practice disaster recovery run.

TranquilMarmot··on Waymo in Dallas
If they were taking the bus in Tacoma, it would be owned and operated by King County Metro which is publicly owned and uses roads that are publicly owned. A great deal of the buses are electric or zero emissions, using electricity from Seattle City Light which is publicly owned.

Needing large context window is a skill issue
TranquilMarmot··on Kimi K3-256k
Using Claude/ChatGPT I rarely hit >256k context for most basic coding tasks. Sometimes if I need to do something more "intense" (bigger refactors, new features) the 1mil window is nice.
TranquilMarmot··on The Strongest El Niño Ever
> I'm talking about a sizeable percentage of the world's population dying because of heatwaves, shall we see desperate measure being taken?

At that point, won't it be too late?

TranquilMarmot··on The Strongest El Niño Ever
I live in the US in the Pacific Northwest, one of the *least* air conditioned regions in the country. I have never had built-in AC since moving here in the early 2000's.

Back in the 2000's, it was fine - maybe a few hot days in the summer, but bearable with shade, fans, proper clothing like you said.

But the last ten years or so, the summer has gotten to be more and more brutal. Heatwaves where it's 70-80% humidity and 100+F outside for more than a few days in a row. We have a portable A/C and find ourselves hooking it up more and more often.

TranquilMarmot··on Bitchat is now on Radicle
> Messages route through nearby devices (max 7 hops)

How far, realistically, could this reach using just iOS and Android devices? If each device can reach ~100m, that means you could theoretically reach somebody 700m (2.3k feet) away? Or would it be further if two devices are at the edge of their radio range?

TranquilMarmot··on Roblox Officially Supports GrapheneOS
Um, ackshually

https://grapheneos.org/usage#grapheneos-camera-app

> GrapheneOS includes our own modern camera app focused on privacy and security. It includes modes for capturing images, videos and QR and barcode scanning along with additional modes based on CameraX vendor extensions (Portrait, HDR, Night, Face Retouch and Auto) on devices where they're available (Pixels currently only have support for Night mode).

I am indeed using the "Pixel Camera" app, which I would consider the "stock camera" for Pixel devices. It is just labelled as "Camera" in the app drawer.

TranquilMarmot··on Roblox Officially Supports GrapheneOS
I did have RCS issues with GrapheneOS (on T-Mobile in the US) for a while, but at some point that was fixed and it works flawlessly now.

As for camera apps, the stock GrapheneOS camera app is a bit clunky, I just download the stock Android "Camera" off of the Play Store...

Not sure if the agent stuff is shared in the "channels", though.

TranquilMarmot··on Show HN: Rowboat – Open-source, local-first alternative to Claude Desktop
I've heard that refrain ("we can switch models so we won't be obsolete!") a hundred times, but it doesn't hold any water for me. OpenAI and Anthropic command such a large percentage of LLM usage that it doesn't really matter which one implements your product - either way, you're screwed.

Your end users literally do not care what model you use behind the scenes or if you're using "the right tool for the job".

> Claude still doesn't have image generation

What? It has for years. Go ask it right now.

TranquilMarmot··on GPT-5.6
I agree. Some sort of weird placebo effect that people get.
TranquilMarmot··on GPT-5.6
The results here match up to my real-world experience using these models every day at work and switching between them regularly.
TranquilMarmot··on GPT-5.6
Any actual data backing this up? Or is this just your personal experience?
TranquilMarmot··on Show HN: Rowboat – Open-source, local-first alternative to Claude Desktop
I have a hunch that both OpenAI and Anthropic are building towards this very quickly. It's one of the startup ideas that will be killed overnight when it's "officially" launched. Claude Tag was just released which lets Claude participate in chats in Slack - only a matter of time until they move those chats out of Slack and into their own platform.
TranquilMarmot··on Codeberg Is Down
I use it to sync projects that I mainly host on Codeberg up to GitHub. It was a "set it and forget it" kind of thing.
TranquilMarmot··on Codeberg Is Down
This seems like a weird comment since Codeberg is only for open source projects, you literally cannot use it for private code. On-prem Forgejo would be the equivalent to on-prem GitLab, both of which are unrelated to this outage.
TranquilMarmot··on FUTO Swipe – A new swipe typing model
Seems like this is a new swipe model, though, so it should be more comparable. I also had to switch back to GBoard on GrapheneOS since I was spending more time fixing typos than actually typing with FUTO but I'm willing to give it another shot.
