TomMarius··on Ask HN: Why are there fewer non-tech personal blogs? (athletes', architects')
Yes, it's very much like blogger.com, but older.

What we have on 'our loca internet' is a few community hubs, one of them is a general one for all kinds of freelancers where they can put a link to their blog, and also the blog platforms have a general listing of blogs separated into categories that you can explore. I don't know of any such community hubs on the English speaking internet.

TomMarius··on Ask HN: Why are there fewer non-tech personal blogs? (athletes', architects')
These blog systems hosted by the news sites do not have FTP access, there is a simplistic web interface that you use to publish articles and set up categories/tags. There are "freehostings" that give you a 3rd level domain and FTP access to a LAMP server (in exchange for displaying an ad banner), but that's a different thing.

I am not sure what you mean by your question, could you clarify?

TomMarius··on Ask HN: Why are there fewer non-tech personal blogs? (athletes', architects')
In my country there is at least 10x political blogs than technical ones. They're using local simplistic blog platforms (usually hosted by news sites) that let you have your own third level domain.
TomMarius··on Fed announces details of new interbank service to support instant payments
I had that happen to me while doing the same (trying to get my girlfriend off insurance she didn't want). I said I am ill and that was it, I had to know her 'birth number' though (date of birth + four numbers). Am European.
TomMarius··on Interview with Bill Gates on Covid, social media
That's because the country loosened the restrictions. It worked, and should've been kept. Sadly the leadership here is populist too, which worked at first (the popular thing in Europe was to restrict) but then didn't (the popular thing became to open up). If they listened to our experts instead of being populists, we wouldn't have opened up and the cases would go to zero, as it nearly did a few months ago.

TomMarius··on When Day Traders Do Well, It’s Probably Just Luck
Suppose that's true, how can people after they get training get so lucky they outperform even most software engineers with their earnings - consistently, for decades?
TomMarius··on Do countries lose religion as they gain wealth? (2013)
Then it would make you believe someone else is so incredibly wise. Posts can contribute to the discussion and suggest side points at the same time. If they didn't want to suggest how much Jesus of Nazareth was wise, they would simply post the quote without the "truth of Jesus of Nazareth [the name used for Jesus the historical figure] words" part.
TomMarius··on Do countries lose religion as they gain wealth? (2013)
The comment I replied to attributes the quote to Jesus of Nazareth, and presents it as evidence that he was an incredibly timelessly wise, even god-like being. Normally when people make out a person to be way too incredible, other people refute that with actual history.
TomMarius··on Do countries lose religion as they gain wealth? (2013)
You know the original bible was lost and written from scratch by the wishes of the new author at least one time sometimes around year 100, right? The first schism. Jesus of Nazareth probably never said such thing.
TomMarius··on There’s no such thing as a tech expert anymore
So what do you call a (tech) (expert) if not a (tech expert)?

TomMarius··on Facebook removes QAnon conspiracy group with 200k members
> Who says it's stronger? It's OK at best

It's what the Americans point to when they discuss reforms of their education system - and I am the one saying it's not really that strong, or rather, does not seem to be the actual solution.

TomMarius··on Facebook removes QAnon conspiracy group with 200k members
How come they deleted a group, then? They should've only banned the offending members.

P.S. I fully agree with the removal.

TomMarius··on Facebook removes QAnon conspiracy group with 200k members
Catholics and other religious groups do exactly that too, using 'god's wish' as their excuse.
TomMarius··on Facebook removes QAnon conspiracy group with 200k members
These conspiracies are rampant in Europe too. Why didn't the stronger education system help here?

TomMarius··on Scientists rename human genes to stop MS Excel from misreading them as dates
> This is the exact sort of thing that indicates market-power being concentrated to a point requiring severe, acute regulatory action.

This is what I react to. Sorry I missed that you're not the original commenter, that's my bad.

I am not sure though what other tool should the biologists learn - they usually know R and Python and they use Excel because they need what Excel offers; there isn't any other software that allows them to easily do whatever they need to do with the data, quickly iterating on the ideas AND then present it nicely.

The solution here should be to fix Excel, but it really is a small issue (that has been worked around, too; and if you know how to use excel correctly, it does not happen to you) compared to making another Excel, which seems like a monstrous task.

TomMarius··on Why did the atomic spy do it?
I do not say that it's not happening. That does not mean we do not welcome the US, or that its actions here are comparable to the actions of the SU, or that the SU, a comparably much worse regime which caused dozens of millions deaths after the war (many in the SU itself, but not only), helped Europe more.

I guess I should thank the SU for stealing our uran, making my fellow citizens forcibly work in the mines as a punishment for not being communist enough, and for hindering our economical development by decades (of the country that used to be one of the most advanced European states before the war, and got destroyed AFTER the war so much that it fell below Africa in HDI)? Well, thanks...

TomMarius··on America’s Unholy Crusade Against China
> Only one country – the US – has a defense strategy calling for it to be the “preeminent military power in the world,” with “favorable regional balances of power in the Indo-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, and the Western Hemisphere.”

Did Russia cease to exist? What about Iran and Turkey (thankfully not as successful)?

TomMarius··on Why did the atomic spy do it?
I know of the US presence in NATO countries and we welcome it. It is absolutely incomparable to the Warsaw Pact occupation of our country (for example, the US forces didn't shoot anybody nor ran over people with a tank) which is the reason why we welcomed the US forces and joined NATO as soon as we could after 1989. Not sure what citations should I send you, I live here (Czechia). You can probably read about it on Wikipedia, I'd do the same.
TomMarius··on Why did the atomic spy do it?
I don't know, why does it matter? How does it change their final goals, visible from their political actions since around 1943? Why do you think I claim they had a master plan from the beginning?
TomMarius··on Why did the atomic spy do it?
We don't feel the US did more in terms of quantity of dead men, we know more Soviet-affiliated troops died there. However with hindsight we now know the real plan of the Soviet Union - it never was to help Europe, but to conquer it. So in conclusion the US government helped us more (and not just during the war), while the SU government sent more people to die for their shady goals here. Nobody is discounting the heroism of the individual soldiers. The sad thing is that the current Russian government is using their legacy to pursue their shady goals again.

TomMarius··on SpaceX test flight of Starship SN-5 [video]
What country are you talking about? I don't know a single one where the majority does not feel financially stressed with too many children. (usually more than 3, but even 2 is too much for a lot of people, in many countries for the majority, probably including the United States).
TomMarius··on SpaceX test flight of Starship SN-5 [video]
It happened in the United States before the first world war, and continued for a few decades after that. Pretty long time to be called "immediately". While it was unpleasant from our current POV, it was way better than anything else at that time, and didn't end because it dissolved, but because the world wars needed funding.
TomMarius··on SpaceX test flight of Starship SN-5 [video]
Was it really shown? Is there a single country that did not replace stress of violence and starvation with economic stress? Do we have at least one larger example of what would happen if the general population was rich?
