TomMarius··on Explosion rocks Beirut, injuring thousands across Lebanese capital
Every day I understand Musk's desire for Mars more. I hope I'll be able to get a ticket. I don't think Earth can survive the next 100 years without a serious change - and the "leaders" and other "elites" are trying their best to hold on to power.
TomMarius··on We quit our jobs to build a cabin
The software is only in our heads. It's mind blowing, but you can't see and feel it. I also love to build physical stuff - last month I built a bed into my car, now I can go anywhere and sleep there - what an awesome thing it is, and my girlfriend loves it too. She appreciates software as well (being a genetic biologist/data analyst/programmer), but the bed, a comparably simpler thing, is what we talk all the time about. The second thing - when was the last time you built a piece of software that helps you do fun stuff? I didn't do that for years, maybe never - all software I build is for "serious work stuff". To be honest, I don't know what program could I make that would bring me joy comparable to the car-bed.

TomMarius··on Physical attractiveness bias in the legal system (2017)
However it is not, at least not if we are talking about (agile) software engineering and related disciplines that other team members do.
TomMarius··on Show HN: I built an app that detects and scolds anyone not wearing a Covid mask
I wonder how this goes with GDPR. It runs on the front-end so it should be OK, but are the legislators, the law and the courts aware of the distinction?
TomMarius··on Physical attractiveness bias in the legal system (2017)
How do you see cultural match and the person's mentality that way? Many brilliant engineers simply wouldn't fit into my team and would be a net negative. Most of the time it's obvious to the person being interviewed too, but how would we know if we don't talk about non-technical things or don't even see each other or talk at all?
TomMarius··on Ask HN: What advice do you have for people going to in their 30s?
I am not yet thirty, but the most important thing I keep in mind is that optimism is a conscious activity, and friendships have to be cared for, and that our loved ones' time is limited.
TomMarius··on Ask HN: What is the most annoying part in Sales?
This looks pretty cool. Do you handle the stricter EU laws in some way (e.g. people sign up and confirm they want to be contacted)?
TomMarius··on Why is America stuck with bad headlights?
The worst are trucks (like mass cargo, not Ford F), they have the headlights placed way too high and usually drive with high beam always on.
TomMarius··on Ask HN: TS separate from JS would be awesome; why's no one working on it?
How about AssemblyScript? TypeScript tailored for WASM. It's early though.
TomMarius··on Silicon Valley investor tries to create 'microschool' in yard, backlash ensues
It's easy to talk about 'not introducing competition' from your armchair. It's way harder when it's your children not getting the education and childhood they deserve; and it's not just about education itself, actually IMHO (from my personal experience) it's mostly not about the education but rather about the environment at the school; I won't send my children to a public school not because of low quality teaching, but because of bullying (both by other kids and by the teachers) which the institution was unable to solve for decades or maybe even hundreds of years, and because I absolutely don't believe in exams, preparations for exams, and marks, and because I have zero control over public schools as a parent. Even a high quality school with the classic subjects/preparations/exams/marks system still would be a reason to move to a freer country to me if I lived in Finland, and in fact I have a coworker here in Prague that did just that.

Even the richest person on Earth can't fix the public schools with their whole fortune, not even a group of the top 10 could - they wouldn't be able to provide funds for more than a year. And private education is definitely not reserved to the rich, I don't think the majority of parents that send their kids to private schools have more than average income.

TomMarius··on Why is America stuck with bad headlights?
Not just "new cars" - a 2001 car that I drove had xeons with the leveling already mandatory. And it's checked at the bi-yearly technical inspection, and the police can forbid you to drive the car further if it's not working and they catch you (not sure if all around EU, definitely in Czechia and Germany).

A Google Pixel is one of the easiest flashable devices, and one of the few devices you can securely use GrapheneOS with.
TomMarius··on Ask HN: What is the most annoying part in Sales?
Yes, Sales Navigator, I haven't found anything else like it.
TomMarius··on Ask HN: What is the most annoying part in Sales?
A) Finding interested people. Cold sales is soul crushing and in my case I was unable to find enough leads to feed myself that way.

B) Running a marketing campaign with no idea whether it is lost money, or will at least pay for itself, or will find enough leads to feed myself, or will find enough leads to feed the employees too.

TomMarius··on Ask HN: What are the most interesting things in tech lately?

TomMarius··on Inside Information and Kodak Stock
What I meant is that information on Twitter is public (that was the great-GP), there is no way anyone could say I was supposed to know that was private, right?
TomMarius··on Do NLP Beyond English
I recommend you to check out NLP research regarding the Czech language. It has high quality researchers keen on making use of the language's features (it's a highly regular and expressive grammar). Sadly not much research is done, but what is done is interesting.
TomMarius··on Inside Information and Kodak Stock
Ianal too, but I don't think what you're saying about the EU is true. It might be true in some countries, but definitely not in the South-Eastern countries or the EU as an entity itself.

That's what the government is for. Either let the corporation be wholly responsible for safety (including things like surveillance, risk analysis, prevention etc), or don't complain about the corporation not doing it when there is a government saying they have it covered. Why are you not angry at the government for not stopping this foreseeable crime?
TomMarius··on Kenyan tea workers file UN complaint against Unilever over 2007 ethnic violence
> If a corporation is going to transplant workers to a plantation in an unsafe place, then the corporation has responsibility for keeping the workers safe.

Citation needed - I never heard of a corporation being required (or allowed) to do law enforcement (private security companies might be contracted bt the government, but simply going and doing is most definitely not possible). The UN declares that a responsibility of governments, and one of the keys to the land claim and recognition of the state.

In some jurisdictions it's legal to stop a crime by appropriate means, but it is not a responsibility of any private person or entity, and it also does not mean you do it normally - that's where you're crossing into the "private army" territory.

TomMarius··on Philosophers on GPT-3
Elsewhere someone replied that art is interesting in a large part because of the personal story. How is this differemt?
TomMarius··on Kenyan tea workers file UN complaint against Unilever over 2007 ethnic violence
Are (foreign!) private people or corporations even allowed to operate a private law enforcement unit in Kenya? I thought the UN discourages that, and it's outright illegal in most countries of EU - meaning the corporation can't have such unit anywhere, that applies to its subsidies too; personal participation in such units is a serious crime as well.
TomMarius··on Kenyan tea workers file UN complaint against Unilever over 2007 ethnic violence
How can a foreign private company or person be responsible for protection of people during a civil war? Or what is the complaint about? The unpaid wages? Why is my unpaid wage not a human rights issue too, then - do I need to be african for that?
