The only thing keeping me from using Linux is the lack of OneNote support in Wine. Essentially, it is only this bug that needs to be fixed: https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47135

I can't really understand that if there is a patch made which works, why it has not been merged into master yet?

The Dutch bicycle-network is safe enough to not have to wear bike helmets. We have a really nice system of seperation of car/bicycle/pedestrian traffic. In addition, a lot of tought is given to design roads in such a way that car traffic automatically adapts to the correct and safe speed that is needed.

TomJansen··on SEO Is Gentrifying the Internet
When content ranking is done algorithmically, the inevitable consequence is that you have people that game the system. I don't have a solid idea on what a sustainable alternative would be, but I believe that we need to move to a search engine which is human-curated. Maybe an implementation is a search engine where you can whitelist sites. That, in combination with crowdsourced lists of sites or content could be one solution.
TomJansen··on The first DNA 'tricorder' in your pocket
I didn't realize that they were this far with Nanopore technology. Really awesome stuff.

The weird thing in this article is that they say that "Most of the studying of DNA: aligning, analyzing, is done on large server clusters or high-end laptops." but that an iPhone app can replace that. In my experience, aligning is not computationally intensive at all.

TomJansen··on AlphaFold: a solution to a 50-year-old grand challenge in biology
According to [1], they must release enough information for others to replicate the AI model: "As a condition of entering CASP, DeepMind—like all groups—agreed to reveal sufficient details about its method for other groups to re-create it. That will be a boon for experimentalists, who will be able to use accurate structure predictions to make sense of opaque x-ray and cryo-EM data."
