Toine··on Still no consensus on testing private methods
Private methods generally are a code smell anyway. If you have dozens of private methods in your class, something is probably wrong in your general design.
Toine··on The Miseducation of Maria Montessori
Montessori schools are expensive in France.
Toine··on SPAs Were a Mistake
This is way oversimplified. You can build a completely static website with NextJS. What I love about it is that you can do everything : SSR by default, SSG as an option, and awesome features like ISR etc.

However, the way NextJS implements SSR is really weird right now : if you use their <Link/> component, the pages props are actually fetched with an XHR request, then the page is rendered. I don't know why. It does feel like an SPA in the end.

Toine··on Italy gets its first unicorn as Scalapay raises $497M from Tencent
Because we're in a gigantic bubble where money is pouring so massively into so many startups that every metric is completely twisted/reversed, valuations are completely disconnected from reality, and the social validation they get from buzzwords on LinkedIn is more important than actual value delivered.

TLDR : madness

Toine··on Simple passwordless authentication for web projects
Juste use Firebase/Auth0/anything else. What a I missing ?
Toine··on How to write untestable code (2008)
I completely disagree with the general sentiment here, this is still very relevant today, misunderstood, and much needed in many codebases.
Toine··on Back-end languages are coming to the front-end
Doesn't NextJS solve this ?
Toine··on Major breakthrough on nuclear fusion energy

Toine··on Containers are not just for Kubernetes
Exactly. If you're big enough, these tools are fine. The thing is 99% of companies are small. Like, really small. Today, 50k users is really small.
Toine··on Containers are not just for Kubernetes
You're not alone. I lost it. Microservices, k8s, Terraform, etc. I don't understand my industry anymore. 99% of the time, they're completely useless and add a ton of complexity to the project. Just sheep, junior mentality. Your product isn't going to succeed because you use the same stack as Amazon or Netflix. If anything, it reduces your chances of success.
Toine··on Don't forget Microsoft
When Microsoft tries to innovate it fails : it's not an innovator
Toine··on Procrastinate: PostgreSQL-Based Task Queue for Python
Postgrastinate.
Toine··on Docker for Mac Without Docker Desktop
"Exterior design and heavy marketing is their sales strategy" this is old, boring and not even true.
Toine··on There’s No Such Thing as Clean Code
These are minor inconveniences relative to the massive benefits all these techniques bring to your codebase. "Go to implementation" shortcut is a thing and solves the first 2.

"One assert per test" -> just test one "concept" per test, not literarily 1 assert statement per test. IE :

  assert(loc.x == 10.3)
  assert(loc.y == 10.4)
  assert(loc.z == 10.5)
is absolutely fine (even you could do it in 1 assert).
Toine··on Age and high-growth entrepreneurship
And this : "Prior experience in the specific industry predicts much greater rates of entrepreneurial success"
Toine··on Age and high-growth entrepreneurship
I guess it heavily depends on the person. I got a huge boost of motivation and energy to launch something when I got my first kid. I guess it's the opposite for others.
Toine··on Favor real dependencies for unit testing
Agreed. Push all external dependencies (DBs, APIs, etc) to the edge. That's it ! Why do you need a functional core though ? You can use decoupled classes and an ioc container that does the wiring for you.
Toine··on Young people from Brazil's favelas set out to conquer digital world
I cannot take someone who calls himself a "crypto artist" seriously.
Toine··on Why Apple’s iMessage is winning: teens dread the green text bubble
So messaging services must be "inclusive" now ? What is that supposed to mean
Toine··on The Big DevOps Misunderstanding
100% this, same for microservices.

One of the most damaging belief a developer can have is "if my stack looks like * insert unicorn *'s stack, we will be a unicorn"

Toine··on Tailwind CSS v3.0
Using @apply is the ultimate last resort though.
Toine··on Ask HN: How to convince big tech team that tests and code quality matter?
Depends on the state of the culture. It has to be at least "fixable" with somewhat open-minded people at the top. There are 10x more people who try to fix cultures but end up burning out and being a scapegoat for everything.
Toine··on The Impending Cloud Reshuffle
I think most of us, senior included, SEVERELY underestimate the cost of having a deeply fragmented stack.

I believe having 1 or 2 max vendors, providing most of your services, is immensely beneficial in the long run, for many reasons.

Toine··on Update on Omicron
This whole thing will never end, will it ? Should we be prepared to live with masks, mandatory vaccination, QR codes and worse for the rest of our lives ?
Toine··on Books that changed my career as a software engineer
I thought only boomers do this.
Toine··on In major shift, EU says vaccine boosters should be considered for all adults
Doing that would require humility and honesty.
Toine··on Macron says France will build new nuclear energy reactors
Janco on HN, finally !

> This will be the only way to keep our standards of living and keep an habitable home.

Jancovici uses physics and maths to prove we definitely won't have western standard of living for 8B people. Even for 2, not for long.
