TobyGiacometti··on Backblaze B2 Down
I wonder why backblazeb2.com is registered with GoDaddy but backblaze.com with Enom...
TobyGiacometti··on Spybot Anti-Beacon: Disable Tracking/Telemetry in Windows
Gaming is also one of the main reasons why I still have a Windows box. However, thanks to https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton, this might be less of a problem in the future.
TobyGiacometti··on Ask HN: How do you handle the fear of complexity?
I think the first thing is to realize that this is normal. Whenever you start something that is outside of your comfort zone, you will most likely feel discomfort. So, trying to get rid of something that is normal won't really work :) However, what you can do is change the way you look at this discomfort. Ask yourself where it is coming from. Are you maybe afraid that you will fail? Once you see what causes the anxiety, you can start seeing it for what it is: just a feeling that comes and goes.
TobyGiacometti··on OfflineIMAP: sync and backup tool for IMAP
I have just checked how much it uses on my side: doesn't go above 50%, but I do consider that pretty high and can totally understand how it could use 100% with bigger mailboxes. For me, this was never a problem since I only run it once daily for backup.

Thank you for mentioning mbsync, I will keep it in mind.

TobyGiacometti··on OfflineIMAP: sync and backup tool for IMAP
Are you using the OfflineIMAP SQLite driver? If not, the maintainers did say it was more performant and reliable than using text files which was the default before version 7.
TobyGiacometti··on OfflineIMAP: sync and backup tool for IMAP
What is the difference between the GitHub version and the paid version on the website?
TobyGiacometti··on OfflineIMAP: sync and backup tool for IMAP
OfflineIMAP is not a graphical email client. It is simply a tool with which you can either backup emails from your provider using IMAP or sync a local Maildir with your provider. The tool uses the Maildir email format. More information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maildir

I don't think imapfw is widely adopted yet, it seems to be work in progress so most people probably opt for the more stable predecessor OfflineIMAP.
TobyGiacometti··on HTTP/2 Performance Anti-Patterns
> headers in HTTP/2 are compressed using HPACK which negates the issue you mention

You are right, my statement is not correct. It certainly does not completely negate the overhead of additional headers. It does greatly reduce it though. So far, I have only heard of compression inefficiency being a real problem when not concatenating. Do you have some examples of header overhead actually being a real issue? Would be happy to update the post.

TobyGiacometti··on HTTP/2 Performance Anti-Patterns
Thank you for your input! I have tweaked the Caveats section to better outline that compression efficiency is usually not a problem.
TobyGiacometti··on HTTP/2 Performance Anti-Patterns
Thank you for your feedback! I tried to keep the article as simple as possible, so I have left out some details on purpose. Like WorldMaker pointed out, headers in HTTP/2 are compressed using HPACK which negates the issue you mention. More information: https://blog.cloudflare.com/hpack-the-silent-killer-feature-...
TobyGiacometti··on Ask HN: Would you launch without T&C and privacy policy?
I would also say that it is essential. On top of that, a site with ToS and privacy policy is more professional and will instil trust. I have just launched a product myself and it took just a couple of hours to have something decent.
TobyGiacometti··on Show HN: Whisper Walk – Siri for Walking
I really like the idea of not having to constantly pull out my phone or be distracted by the turn-by-turn directions of a robot thinking I am a car :)
TobyGiacometti··on Show HN: Whisper Walk – Siri for Walking
Thank you very much, will do that right now :)

Sorry to hijack this thread! I just have a quick question: I have just posted a Show HN and can't figure out how to write a comment, the comment field is not showing. How did you manage?
TobyGiacometti··on Ask HN: Built a generic monitoring service – which niche to target?
I am currently not managing any server environments anymore, so there is nothing to try it out with, but thank you for the offer! :) I certainly would have paid for it though...
TobyGiacometti··on Ask HN: Built a generic monitoring service – which niche to target?
I've used Zabbix before for monitoring a server environment of moderate size. The flexibility led to certain things not being very simple to configure. So your idea of targeting a niche is certainly a good one, you can make your product easier to use. The 2 areas that would be most useful for me are cron and database monitoring.
TobyGiacometti··on Ask HN: What would you do with 6 months?
Something similar happened to me last year. Instead of just relaxing or taking time off, I used those 6 months to work on my life :) Most of the time I would advise people to keep the wheel rolling: use the momentum to turn your idea into reality. Taking too much time off can make it difficult to get back into it. Of course, if you need a break then take it, but keep momentum in mind...
TobyGiacometti··on Employee burnout is becoming a huge problem in the American workforce
> The corollary is that it is as easy to stay in place by standing as by running on a treadmill.

I like this metaphor! However, once we realize that we are the treadmill, we can turn it off and walk away...

TobyGiacometti··on Employee burnout is becoming a huge problem in the American workforce
While companies should definitely be doing something about this, at the end of the day it is our responsibility to look after ourselves. Too many people tolerate this type of treatment out of fear. I understand that this is easier said than done, but I do not think the situation will change much unless people start standing up for themselves.

Remember the number 1 regret Bronnie Ware observed while caring for people in the last 12 weeks of their lives: I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

TobyGiacometti··on Ask HN: How to proxify emails?
For email forwarding, you can have a look at https://github.com/danisola/forward-cat. However, I do not know if this would work for your setup. On top of that, I do not think it handles replies to the email alias, but I am not sure.

What could work is to just use an internal system for messaging, so that each of your users has a private inbox in your store platform. Kind of like direct messaging in a forum...

TobyGiacometti··on Ask HN: What VPN service do you use?
Have a look at https://thatoneprivacysite.net/vpn-section/ to get a detailed comparison chart of many different providers.

Personally, I can recommend IVPN.

TobyGiacometti··on Ask HN: What is the best web dev front end and back end framework?
I don't think there is such a thing as the best framework. One of the reasons being that there are so many to choose from and each of them does something better/worse than the other. I am mostly talking about PHP frameworks here, I don't know about the other languages, but assume it might be similar. At the end of the day, if the framework helps you get the job done, you have picked the right one :)
TobyGiacometti··on Ask HN: Devs in open space offices: How do you manage to focus?
I too have benefitted from noise-canceling headphones (Bose QuietComfort 25). On top of that, I use a technique called neural entrainment: an audio track with a specific repetitive beat which helps you attain a state of focus and flow. In fact, I am in the process of creating a product with neural entrainment audio tracks. If you are interested, let me know...
TobyGiacometti··on How to explain to a layperson why a developer should not be interrupted? (2011)
One tactic I would use (and have used before) if I can't switch places is to just put on headphones and listen to music. You could even leave the music away and just have the headphones on. This was usually quiet successful in letting people know that I don't want to be distracted.
TobyGiacometti··on Show HN: Simple website for posting updates on your side projects
I really like the idea, keep it up!

A couple small typos:

• Your side projects belongs here: belong/project

• Dont and doesnt: missing apostrophe

TobyGiacometti··on Ask HN: How can I come up with numerical metrics for my work experience?
In my opinion, programmers have a very high impact. While salespeople help sell the product, the programming you put into the product is what creates the actual impact.

Something you could do is contact the customers and ask them for numbers. They will most likely know what kind of impact the website or app you helped develop made. You can then use these numbers in your CV.

Another thing I often see people forget: let your uniqueness shine. Include a catchy phrase, a quote or something else personal as the first thing on your CV. This will certainly spice up your CV and make it less boring.
