TobiasCassell··on Ask HNC; Can you suggest an alternative to Gmail?
Thanks Kqr2, this looks great!
TobiasCassell··on Ask HNC; Can you suggest an alternative to Gmail?
Interesting that I can access my Gmail account from Android but not the laptop...

Spectacular! Reminds me of of Le Mystere Picasso eh, PG?
TobiasCassell··on Ask HN: advices for presenting a project
"Presentationzen" by Garr Reynolds and "Slide:ology" by Nancy Duarte will be exceedingly helpful to you. Here are links to their blogs and Amazon descriptions. Good luck!

You should also find a copy of Guy Kawasaki's "Reality Check" or "The art of the start". Even if you don't have enough time to push through the whole book, just read the chapter on pitching. Should be very helpful.

TobiasCassell··on The Curse of Information Addiction
I enjoy HP's service for this reason. It's a joy reading my online content while riding public transit and I find I can keep my focus and delve as deep as I need to. Sure they are just trying to sell more ink cartridges, ($1500 a gallon- I would too) but in doing so they are giving us a worthwhile tool/service. Here is the link- http://www.tabbloid.com/
TobiasCassell··on Ask HN: How do I get to that next level of traffic?
I joined and roamed around a bit, its really beautiful. I very much admire the minimalist style. But I think it is possible the very thing that makes the site such a joy is what makes it hard to gain traction, and that is the lack of content/information outside of the actual music. Users need to be getting a constant stream of info to hold their attention. If a site doesn't do this it sends a subliminal message to the user "nothing new here, I'm never coming back"- they may not even be aware of this and they may have nothing but great things to say about your site but they might not return either. I feel you may need more emotional branding of the artists to hold everyones attention, and more intimate connection to the music industry. In a perfect world you would not have to clutter up your site with any of the following suggestions but maybe there is a way to incorporate some new elements without sacrificing the gorgeousness of it all.

1)Video content never fails to resonate with users, it would be great for artists to embed their existing online video content somewhere on your site. 2) Do any of the artists have their own groups on Ning? Can you create a loop somehow? 3)Do the artists have flickr groups? Are they on tour, can you integrate their Dopplr profiles if they have them? 4)Geographical info mashup? Where is the music coming from? Where do the artists live? Can you figure out how to provide information regarding gigs? 5)Take the blog more seriously. Maybe don't hide it? Blog more often, mention music related links and stuff that may not directly concern the site. Maybe you should think of the blog as the marketing? (feedback loop again)

I could continue but I'm not sure if I'm on the right track here. I look at everything with a marketing/social engineering prospective, I don't write code. Let me know HackerNewsCommunity and I'll give it some more thought.

I second this request.
TobiasCassell··on 37signals: Put a dent in the universe
Thanks Anti, thats the quote alright, it seems I incorrectly remembered the "dent" line came from that discussion, I was wrong. (So many books, so many quotes, so many people, so much information!)

Carry on then...

TobiasCassell··on 37signals: Put a dent in the universe
I don't remember the exact quote so try not to flame me for getting it wrong- A while back Steve Jobs was courting that guy(forgot his name) from PepsiCo for the CEO position at Apple and he said something like; "Come on Man, stop selling sugar water and help me make a dent in the universe"
TobiasCassell··on Ask HN: List of Hacker Blogs?
I will run the risk of annoying everyone as a master of the obvious but this should be included, yes?

TobiasCassell··on Only the Rich Can Afford It. Should Taxpayers Back It?
Mr Stross appears to be on a mission not to have his content reflect anything other then the tone of that sensationalism title of the article. I investigated his bio, he has written a lot of books, mostly technology related. And he is no stranger to Silicon Valley, which makes me wonder if he is playing out some personal vendetta against the people behind Tesla.

How about the American government making sweetheart deals with the oil industry so that the diesel fuel available in the United States isn't compatible with any of the many fuel efficient automobiles in use all over the world. What would that title be? "Only the Poor/Middle Class & Rich Can Afford It. Should the Collusion Between the Oil Industry & the Government Back It?" Or how about the American government turning a blind eye (or even worse) as the oil giants snapped up many of the patents for battery technology over the last decade so nobody can innovate with them? Is it possible Tesla's initial round of funding would have gotten them a bit of traction if they would have had access to some of this battery technology? This technology that already exists but is being squandered thanks to big oil? What would Mr Stross have used as a title for that one? "Only Everyone Will Be Able To Afford It. But It Is Not In The Best Interest Of The Oil Conglomerates, Should Anybody In Power Bother With It?"

Grow some balls Randall.... what happened to the NYT?

TobiasCassell··on Is it going to rain?
Looks gorgeous. Has anyone built a startup addressing how hard it is to properly search if an idea already exists?

TobiasCassell··on Ask News.YC: Were logical people born logical?
SOLD! Threadstarter was first!
TobiasCassell··on Ask News.YC: Were logical people born logical?
I didn't know that. I'm at TobiasCassell@Gmail- the book is still up for grabs.
TobiasCassell··on Ask News.YC: Were logical people born logical?
I didn't see this here, I'll send the book out to whomever emails me first.
TobiasCassell··on Ask News.YC: Were logical people born logical?
Got it.
TobiasCassell··on Ask News.YC: Were logical people born logical?
I have an advanced copy. My father sent it to me, pops doesn't care for nonfiction and he knew I'd enjoy it. He used to own a bookstore so he still gets the gallys(spelling?). I'm almost done with it Unalone, email me and I'll put it in the post for you.
TobiasCassell··on Ask News.YC: Were logical people born logical?
Malcom Gladwell has a new book coming out in a couple of weeks called "Outliers".. He delves into all of this, I'm half way through it and I cant put it down. He has so much proof! Proof of all of the contributing factors that go into the exceptional accomplishments of certain extraordinary people. People like Bill Gates and Bill Joy. It's a little mean of me to mention the book as I think it gets released on the 18th, until I saw your post I resisted mentioning it.

The only answer I have for you is probably not what you are looking for- there is a Buddhist expression called "mu". It means you have to un-ask the question before we can proceed, your question is like saying "are you still beating your wife?" Of course, either way one answers is incorrect- if you say "no" it could mean you used to beat your wife, and if yes thats quite bad as well. The correct answer can only be mu. So, in essence, there are too many factors involved for a yes or no . Get the book and then email me if you would like, I'd love to chat about it, its fantastic!
