"...after __believing__ they heard Seacat fire several rounds."

Seems like that isn't even 100% certain.

ToastyMallows··on Major book publishers sue Amazon’s Audible over new speech-to-text feature
This was my first thought as well. Android will basically be able to do the same thing that Audible is doing but on a much larger scale. I wonder how many different licenses that is going to affect?

ToastyMallows··on I thought I made a hard game and then speedrunners destroyed it
I'd say it's a little of both. On a game like 007 GoldenEye (N64), people have been speedrunning the game for almost 20 years, and are now in their early or late thirties. But there are still younger people that are getting to the game just now and getting new World Record runs. And this is just one game as an example, every game is different.

I wish the App Timer was like a TV timer, where the TV just turns off after the timer is up. I'd like something that kills a certain app that is running on my phone. It sounds like that isn't what the App Timer will do.

I imagine you would need root on your phone to kill apps from another app.

If you're brave it looks like you can replace it in only 5 steps. The caveat being that those 5 steps look very difficult, and in some cases require special tools.

ToastyMallows··on DDoS Attack Against Dyn Managed DNS
+1

The only way that I could check to see if Github knew they were having problems was by searching Google for "github status", and then seeing from the embedded Twitter section in the results page that there was a tweet about having problems. Twitter also being down for me didn't help the situation either.

Thanks for the fact check! I'm glad that they're not region locked, but I know that a TON of stuff is.
ToastyMallows··on YouTube Go: YouTube reimagined for the next generation of YouTube viewers
This also struck me. I was surprised that they picked WWE of all things, you would think that video would be region locked and thus not available outside of the US, like a lot of things are.
ToastyMallows··on SignAloud: Gloves That Translate Sign Language into Text and Speech
I wonder if they've just hard coded their names for now because they had trouble doing fingerspelling, because I doubt that someone's name-sign is just a 'T'. That's really close to the sign for 'bathroom', which would be weird :)
ToastyMallows··on If cryonics suddenly worked, we'd need to face the fallout
My comment was a little tounge-in-cheek, but as mentioned there are good episodes about the perils of being cryogenically frozen.
ToastyMallows··on If cryonics suddenly worked, we'd need to face the fallout
What about Futurama? The whole show is about someone who gets woken up from being cryogenically frozen. We could stand to learn a lot about Fry and his adventures.
ToastyMallows··on I Don't Want to Hire You If You Can't Reverse a Binary Tree
> "Just about everything you do in your programming career will be related to trees."

I've never knowingly used a tree structure since college, everything is abstracted away from me. Now whether this is a good thing or a bad thing remains to be seen, but it has not been a problem yet.

ToastyMallows··on Namecheap live chat social engineering leads to loss of 2 VPS
It depends on how its implemented.

If it's "Whats your mother's maiden name?" and they let you reset it in the browser, it's a bug.

But if they send you an email (in my case to Gmail, that has 2FA turned on), then it is a feature, because then you'd be required to either 1) intercept the recovery email (and get the password reset URL) or 2) know the format of the password reset URL and just happen to guess mine after brute-forcing every possible link (assuming there is no timeout for the URL or anything else like that).

You can also report potholes on Waze. Some city governments actively follow Waze [0], so it would be easy for people to report potholes, and the government to watch and see where they need to be filled.

This sounds dubious. Do you have a source for this?

Nice! Thanks for this.

Having a file encrpyt to an HTML file is pretty interesting, something I've never considered before. Very portable.

ToastyMallows··on Show HN: Zip It – Encryption Anywhere
Is this open source? The JavaScript that encrypts the file (sjcl.js) is minified and I don't feel like spending hours trying to figure out what it does. Is this a JavaScript library that was reused from somewhere?

ToastyMallows··on Support for older versions of Internet Explorer ends on January 12, 2016
It's a good first step though. This means that websites can start telling users "we don't support this browser because Microsoft doesn't", etc., and they will die off quicker.

ToastyMallows··on VW Has Spent Two Years Trying to Hide a Big Security Flaw
I saw a report a while back that if you put your car keys in the freezer or something it blocks enough of the signal from your keys so that someone can't use this signal repeater to unlock your car, it's supposed to act like a Faraday cage (somewhat).

I know it sounds stupid but I remember seeing it on HackerNews a while back. I'm not sure if it was debunked or not.

ToastyMallows··on Original Star Wars script discovered in UNB library
I find it extremely fascinating that public or college libraries can have such a vast collection of items that something of this significance could go unnoticed for almost 15 years (article says that it may have been put in the library in the late 90s). I can't remember now but I've read a couple other articles that have the same premise, students or employees go in the archives to find something and end up stumbling upon something truly unique. I'd love to be someone who just goes through old books and manuscripts and sorts them, maybe in another life.

Surprised that no one has mentioned Google Wallet (https://www.google.com/wallet/send-money/). You may have issues sending money outside of the US, and a Google account is required. No fees and I've never had a problem with it.
ToastyMallows··on Spotify Introduces Video Clips, Podcasts, and Activity-Based Playlists
For the life of me I don't understand why they removed 3rd party apps. I used Classify, SoundDrop, SongKick and others all the time, they were so useful.

I understand that they wanted people to use their Web API and SDK, but it was so nice and convenient to have them embedded inside of the Spotify desktop client.
