ToFab123··on Microsoft looks ready to launch Windows 11
To a large extend Vista and Windows 7 was the same OS. Windows 7 just had a lot of performance improvement but all the major technical redesigns and improvements came with Vista. I was happy to have a powerful PC that was more than capable of running Vista so I never saw any of the issues that people complain about with Vista. When Windows 7 came out it was just like Vista had a service pack applied. Windows 7 was not a major step away from Vista. This new Windows 11 I suspect is the same. Just an incremental update from Windows 10 with some added Marketing play in form of a new version number.

ToFab123··on Microsoft Irish subsidiary paid zero corporate tax on £220bn profit last year
I would say that it would more fair if tax was paid in the end users home country. This way these worldwide mega cooperation's would help every country where they sell their products instead of all the money goes to the US.

In 10 years from now it could easily be China that owns many of these mega cooperation's. Would you find it fair if the tax money from china "MS", china "apple", china x all would go to China and the USA would get zero.

ToFab123··on Competing with Steve Jobs (the first time)
I follow this interesting blog series also. For those that are new to this series. It is written by Steven Sinofsky that for several years in Microsoft's early days was Bill Gates personal Technical Assistance (and the guy that removed the start button in Windows). He is now writing a book about his life at Microsoft in the early days. This blog series is the chapters in that book. You can subscribe so each chapters is send to your email free of charge.

I am waiting with a bit of excitement to the next chapter.

In that chapter he is introducing Bill Gates to the Internet(!) That got to count as a special day at work.

So far the chapters has been released like maybe twice a week. Now there is longer-ish pause since the previous chapter was released. The conspiracy theorist in me think the pause could be BillG that wants to review that chapter before it is being released. Just a guess to why there seems to be a small pause in the release flow or maybe it is just me being impatient:)

ToFab123··on Ask HN: Is Google Search Dying?
The trick to get Bing to give you the best results are to change your region (on bing.com) to United States. There are tons of features that are only enabled if you are in the US.

ToFab123··on To Be Tracked or Not? Apple Is Now Giving Us the Choice
I remember when Microsoft introduced "Do not track" and enabled it by default many websites said "no we will not grant that request"- because the user has not made a choice but using the default choice.

Isn't it same situation with this. My Iphone had tracking disabled after updaring to 14.5. I have not made a choice and I am not being prompted for anything

ToFab123··on The Hotdog web browser and browser engine
I remember that they made an special version just for me. An update had removed a feature i used a lot.

A while later I helped them track down an error they couldn't find the cause of. They asked how they could thank me and i replied "bring back feature x"

For a little while they put up a link to a "Tony-edition" on the official download site until they got the feature back in the regular release. I still have it somewhere.

Hotdog was my first html editor. Brilliant is was. Happy memories

ToFab123··on Will Windows 10 be the last Windows OS?
I would say there is a more likely than Windows becomes open source and (some) Linux distros will switch to use the windows kernel than the scenario you put forward.

The amount of work it would take to switch Windows to use a linux kernel is mindbuggeling. One thing is the actual task of switching the kernel but documentation, tools suppor, drivers, end user training etc etc makes this scenario unrealistic.

It wouldn't even bring any benefits to Windows. It already has a perfectly fine kernel

Congratulations. That's the way to do it :)

Can you add a "Log in with Microsoft" (or OpenID)? I don't have a google or apple account which seems to be a requirement when looking at the web / windows version.

ToFab123··on The Next Great Disruption Is Hybrid Work – Microsoft
Depending on what type of job you do and the company you do it for, it will probably be more like everyone in your time zone. If the language of the company and yours is non-English you will often only compete against those that speaks that language. Much like today. Where I work everyone speaks good English. It is just more practical that everyone speaks Danish so Danish speakers get first priority at job interviews. English-only speakers are not excluded but danish speakers are preferred. Could imagine many other places are like this.
ToFab123··on In Stockholm there's currently an IT battle underway
Reminds me the old "war" between AOL Instant Messenger and MSN Messenger. I think I recall that one the same day there was around 50 updates to those programs. Each update breaking something from the other and then one blinked and the stream of updates stopped and the 2 apps no longer spoke to each other.

ToFab123··on Amazon Just Cut Off Warehouse Workers from a Companywide Directory
Yes. With all the stories there has been published over the years about Amazon warehouse working condition "slave camp" is the term that springs to my mind when I hear the word Amazon. Being an Amazon warehouse worker must be hell. That Amazon pays so little in tax only shows, to me, that the company Amazon's only concern is to get money and that they don't care about society or humans.
