Timpy··on Groundbreaking arm amputation surgery makes a ‘phantom’ hand seem real
I'm curious about your experience, do you actually feel like you are seeing green, or do you just know that green is the correct answer?

We had a bunch of different candies on the table at game night and I gave my friend some M&Ms, he thought they came from a bag of mint flavored M&Ms. He said, "wow I never tried these before, they really taste like mint." We all did a double take, he definitely did not eat mint M&Ms, I don't really remember if we even had mint M&Ms at the table. I believe him when he says he says he tasted mint though, like his brain placeboed the mint into place.

Timpy··on Ask HN: Do you still miss your RIM BlackBerry?
I try to use this but I reliably end up getting the wrong word, which leads to some strange swypo typos. Here's a quick test, what I wanted to type on top and what came out on bottom:

"I'm a good singer"

"In a good dinner"

Timpy··on Ask HN: Recruiters want people who do side projects, yet contracts forbid them?
My last job was in the online learning space. In my final interview with the company owner I brought up my worries about this very thing, he looked at me concerned and asked what my side project was about. When I told him it was something to do with NLP he laughed and basically said he couldn't care less as long as it doesn't compete with his product. I wanted to get that in writing but I wasn't in a strong position to negotiate; regardless it was never a problem.
Timpy··on Ask HN: What should I say to my manager when my performance starts suffering?
I don't know about this particular case, but direct and clear can be read more like "accusing" depending on your culture. I think this reads more like "hey is everything okay?" than "why are your numbers dipping?"
Timpy··on Native speakers are hard to understand in a lingua franca situation
I agree, it drives me nuts when I see bad hot takes on the English language by Anglophones. Articles in English about English are more often than not egocentric and short sighted.

I heard an Englishman quip that English is the only language where you can tell a person's class by their accent. Or a lot of people think English is the hardest language to learn because of its irregularities or terrible spelling rules. Or that our slang is somehow exceptional. Most of these people don't have enough experience in other languages to have any idea how they compare to English.

Timpy··on The Missing Semester of CS Education
I suspect I'm not the only one who was introduced to vim because it's the default for git. This alone makes it good CS101 stuff.

I don't think they really advocate for vim to be your daily driver for all editor needs. Just a "you should know a thing or two about what this is because you're going to be lost the first time git shoves you into a vim editor" sort of thing.

Timpy··on The handshake emoji is more complicated than you might think
>That does not mean that people are free to redefine words as they choose and change their meanings entirely. That is how you get a dialect and then a different language.

There's nothing wrong with new dialects and new languages.

>With emoji, there is no shared understanding precisely because there are simply too many

A lot of people are already using emojis where everybody in the stream of communication shares understanding. Using an obscure emoji is possible just like using an obscure word is possible.

>often with no meaning and when meaning does exist, it is either vague or dependent on culture.

Using text for communication has the exact same feature. Words can be vague or can dependent on culture. Words can have two meanings. Words can be sarcastic or patronizing just like a thumbs up or smiling emoji can be.

By your reasoning, we should ask British people to stop using X's and O's at the end of their texts to indicate the tone of the message. And Japanese people should stop using ASCII emojis that border on artwork to indicate emotion.

Timpy··on The handshake emoji is more complicated than you might think
This is descriptive vs prescriptive linguistics. It's up for debate whether or not using emojis as hieroglyphs is a problem.
Timpy··on The handshake emoji is more complicated than you might think
I agree that it would be a more apt comparison if the original band-aid color where neon pink, or some other non-human-skin-tone.
Timpy··on Don't make customers hunt for the Sign In button on your website
>defocuses for no apparent reason

I use Surfing Keys, a vim-like plugin for browsers. When inputs defocus unexpectedly while I'm typing all of the navigation shortcuts kick in and it's like "roll a d100 to see which random negative consequence you get." Usually I at least lose the page that I'm on and I have to start the form over.

Timpy··on Gallup: U.S. church membership dips below 50% for first time
Where I'm from the catholic churches offer the most prestigious high school educations because their cost is similar to college. They in no way offer a better education, it's just a paywall to keep your kids surrounded by like-minded society.
Timpy··on Kanji Club: Search Kanji by Parts with Instant Feedback
I'm surprised I couldn't find 亻 here, I understand it can be found under 人 but that's not going to be obvious to a lot of beginners.
Timpy··on The productivity of working from home: Evidence from Japan
I was acutely aware of how my commute was affecting my lifestyle before WFH became widespread, if you think the only difference is waking up 10 minutes earlier you've lost your mind. You are the one generalizing here.
Timpy··on We created a fake language to root out resume liars
I just went through a round of job hunting and got plenty of private sector responses using a latex-made PDF. My resume is really not obvious that it was made in latex though.
Timpy··on Ask HN: IT jobs fighting against climate catastrophe?
I'm sorry but in the face of an overwhelming consensus amongst scientists I think we'll need more than a blog post full of unsupported claims if anybody is to reconsider their position.
Timpy··on A Simple Way to Reduce Cognitive Bias
In an effort to eat healthier I also went about analyzing my cravings. Maybe I don't really want fast food, maybe I'm actually in the mood for something salty. I spent a long time finding a healthy alternative to these base cravings and eventually my body adapted and I found myself craving the healthy alternatives. Being mindful in this case led to an outcome that I considered favorable.
Timpy··on An Atonement of Nano
Yeah if you've gone through the trouble to learn vim you're probably okay with tweaking some shell defaults as well. If you're not comfortable in the shell at all it's much better to get tossed into nano than it is vim.
Timpy··on Farmers are having to hack their own tractors to make repairs
If a piece of equipment breaks down in the field you need to be able to repair it right there and continue working. Stopping what you're doing to take it to the Apple store isn't acceptable.
Timpy··on Google Stadia shuts down internal studios, changing business focus
I thought I had to buy Stadia to Pro to play any game. This isn't the case. There was a game I wanted to play, it doesn't run on Linux, I bought it 50% off on Stadia and I'm a happy user. I'm not going all in on Stadia of course; I realize that there's a good chance Stadia will disappear eventually. For the convenience and quality I'm getting now I don't mind buying this game on Steam again later if it happens that Stadia is gone and I want to play it again. For the right use case I recommend Stadia.
Timpy··on NES.css – NES-Style CSS Framework
Can we get a link? I'd love to see this CSS in action.
Timpy··on Split keyboards and how to build them
I agree with this. I wrote a script that will focus my most commonly used windows with keyboard shortcuts. Super+F for Firefox, Super+T for terminal, Super+S for Spotify, and so on. Between this, vim, Surfing Keys for Firefox, and just an interest in learning keyboard shortcuts I have mostly eliminated the mouse. I still use it when it's the right tool for the job, but I can get by with far less mousing these days.
Timpy··on Tell HN: Dropbox now requires access to contacts for Google login
Thanks for sharing this, I've been trying to move away from Google Drive and I was about to go all in on Dropbox. The recent layoffs made me question Dropbox a little but this is the final nail in the coffin. I'm looking for something Linux friendly if anybody has a solution they're loving right now. Backblaze B2 maybe?
Timpy··on Are Experts Real?
I agree with this. Let's say for example you are one of the world's leading immunologists when a global pandemic breaks out. Going on TV because you "by definition want to appear on TV" is tautological, you could say that about anything on the list. A leading expert may see that they have a responsibility help lead the public, it's perfectly possible that want for media attention for personal fame is completely irrelevant. Want for media attention to help guide the course of a pandemic to a safer path qualifies as "because they wanted to appear on TV," but the GP reads uncharitably.
Timpy··on A 432-year-old manual on social distancing
There's a difference between the death rates in those plagues and this pandemic, too. There's a difference in the amount of information we have compared to Ragusa. There's a difference between how globally connected the world was then. There's a difference in the technology we have now that allows us to continue to facilitate some sort of economy from our homes.
Timpy··on GNOME has no thumbnails in the file picker and my toilets are blocked
> Why was there a Windows monopoly? I think it’s a stretch to just blame it on OEM bundling. No, it’s legit because there isn’t anything else.

I agree GNOME-3 is blocked toilet, but Windows 10 is also a blocked toilet. I have a file that I would like to open on my Windows 10 computer "passport.pdf", I hit the winkey and type "passport [enter]" to open the file. Windows launched a Bing search on Edge for the word "passport", but Edge has to go through its welcome dialog because I've never opened it before. This is only one example; all in all using Windows 10 is like taking a hike with a rock in your shoe.

Windows WAS a monopoly because of its usability, but now it's ubiquitous because we're path dependant. Having to use Windows 10 for me is having to walk downstairs to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. I wish I could stay on Windows 7 forever, but I'm very happy with Mint Cinnamon DE for now.

Timpy··on Funky Fantasy IV: A Machine-Translated Video Game Experiment
"o-nii-chan" is a great example of translation difficulty because it's very natural in Japanese to refer to your older brother as "o-nii-chan" and it sounds like bad exposition writing in English.
Timpy··on Archaeologists in Turkey unearth 2,500-year-old temple of Aphrodite
I don't know enough about the history of Turkey and the Armenian genocide to be properly outraged every time the country of Turkey makes it in a headline, so I'm sorry if I'm being insensitive here but I have a question open to everybody.

Is there any road to redemption for historical atrocities? I'm not defending Turkey because I genuinely don't know, but is there something they could do to alleviate the issue or are they cancelled for all eternity? Is there something they're doing now that's related to the Armenian genocide that's perpetuating the issue? Should we still be mad at Mongolia for Genghis Khan's infamous imperial violence?

Timpy··on Funky Fantasy IV: A Machine-Translated Video Game Experiment
でしょう roughly means "don't you agree" or "I agree", I didn't play the FF games so I don't have enough context to translate its original meaning here.

手に入る literally translates to "put into hand", but it means "acquire" in the context of opening a chest and finding a potion. Japanese games say "potion put into hand" and English translations say "You received a potion".

全く literally means "truly" or "very" but a lot of the time people use to mean "seriously" in a sarcastic sense. Like, "seriously!?" or "jeeze!". A beginner would think "very" but somebody with experience would know they're just complaining in a way that doesn't elicit* a response.

Timpy··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
When I lived in Russia my doctor messaged me via WhatsApp. I'm American so I was a little culture shocked, I don't know if this is standard procedure or anything but it illustrates how ubiquitous WhatsApp is.

I'm so anti-Facebook now that it's a part of the way I identify myself, and for all that I can't delete it. I maintain contact with a friend in Germany via Whatsapp or Facebook messenger, and in this case it would be possible to use email (which is not nearly as casual as firing off a message in your spare moments) or some other service but it doesn't solve the problem about friend groups.

I have friend groups around the world that my only way to participate in is Facebook. I believe moving abroad is in my future again, and Messenger is detestably the only real way to keep up with my friends back home. Leaving Facebook and Messenger is like leaving a bar I hate; I'm only here for the people and I wish we could go somewhere else.

Timpy··on U.S. Capitol Locked Down Amid Escalating Protests
I saw a 1 minute clip of him talking where he spent 50 seconds fueling the fire with "we won this landslide election and it was stolen from us there was no way we lost Georgia" and ten seconds of "but go home and be peaceful"
