Timmy_C··on AWS CodeBuild – Build and test code with continuous scaling
It works side-by-side with CodeDeploy.

Using CodePipelines and CodeCommit you can create a workflow where a git commit to a CodeCommit repo can get picked up by pipelines and sent to the build service (i.e. CodeBuild or Jenkins). Then CodeBuild will push the resulting artifact to S3. CodeDeploy (and Elastic Beanstalk, CloudFormation and OpsWorks) can be configured to deploy the built artifacts to your application fleet.

It's the last piece in AWS's solution for continuous deployment.

Timmy_C··on ProgressJS – A themable HTML5 progress-bar library
I remember an article last year talking about how this kind of progress bar is a distraction to the user and ultimately it's a UI anti-pattern.

https://medium.com/because-we-love-software/126cfe0fa698

I don't know if I agree with all of his points but he does make me think twice before I copy a trendy design.

For those interested in an Angular version there is http://victorbjelkholm.github.io/ngProgress/

...but it looks like it's only for a top of the page progress bar.

Timmy_C··on Introducing Amazon Fresh
You don't want to drive to that Trader Joe's. They have the worst parking garage I've ever seen. It's really difficult to get into and out of without hitting a post or another car. Since the parking garage is above the grocery store you have to drive up a steep ramp to park. And I've seen shopping carts accidentally rolling down that ramp more than once.

Also, I don't know if I'd say Trader Joe's is much better than the stuff you can find on Amazon. They're about equivalent in terms of quality. I'd say that the biggest benefit of your solution is that you get to pick out your own produce.

Timmy_C··on The "No Fire" Policy
You're right, being fired disqualifies you from collecting unemployment. But you should still file anyway. Your former employer has to provide an explanation of why you were let go. If the reason isn't sufficient or your former employer doesn't reply then the state will provide you unemployment benefits.
Timmy_C··on The "No Fire" Policy
As someone who recently was fired . . . you're right, it's not the end of the world. But it does make life very uncomfortable for a lot of reasons. You don't see work friends. You don't have the cash to do the things you once did. Searching for a job becomes your new job and going to interviews sucks. Writing 20 different versons of the same cover letter sucks. Filing for unemployment sucks. And the list goes on. It's not something I would wish upon someone unless they really deserved it.
Timmy_C··on Microsoft opens its own social network
After Friendster did their big redesign they added Facebook login too. I think that was about a year ago now.
Timmy_C··on Microsoft opens its own social network
Everyone agrees that we're going to call this "sock-el" right?
Timmy_C··on Google Nexus 4: Nearly flawless
This phone uses the same radio for making phone calls as any other GSM phone.
Timmy_C··on Windows 8 Arrives
I suspect they believe only visitors with Windows machines will ever visit their site.
Timmy_C··on Why Windows Just Can’t Win
I feel like consumers are clamoring for an Android phone that runs stock Jelly Bean. The Nexus 7 shipped with stock Android 4.1 and it has been very successful in the tablet market.
Timmy_C··on Why Windows Just Can’t Win
This article demonstrates the increasing gap between tech reporters and consumers. Announcements and marketing aren't the metrics for the quality of a product. Design, user experience and features will ultimately decide whether the latest line of Microsoft products succeeds.

But he does have a point with bloatware and control over the brand. I commonly associate the Windows brand with garbage software that comes pre-installed on every PC.

Timmy_C··on Extend Twitter Bootstrap with these Bootstrap Form Helpers
I'm impressed with how responsive the author has been in the comments here. It seems like each concern is met with a reply and even some times he creates an issue item for it in Github. Nice work!
Timmy_C··on Color Shuts Down
Venturebeat pointed out that "Color as a company still has plenty of cash in the bank."

Timmy_C··on Surface Pricing Announced - $499 USD
That is the iPad 2 however. The New iPad with cellular starts at $629USD.
Timmy_C··on Surface Pricing Announced - $499 USD
The Windows RT version of the Surface is a consumption device. I feel like the primary use cases are reading, movies, web, e-mail and so on. You'll have to wait for the x86 version of the Surface if you're looking to do graphics editing.
Timmy_C··on Surface Pricing Announced - $499 USD
I think you'd be surprised at how a color that is SO DIFFERENT could make the device seem unique and individual. Everyone has either a black or a brushed metal laptop. Something this bright could sell well because of its novelty.

There was a lot of buzz around the cyan version of the new Nokia Windows Phone 8.

Timmy_C··on Surface Pricing Announced - $499 USD
I haven't been able to find any credible information about resolutions but the rumors seem to point toward less than retina.

But the flip side of that is most of the Windows 8 interface is rectangles with large type. You don't need very high resolution devices to make that style of interface look crisp and sharp.

Timmy_C··on ABalytics.js: Client-side A/B Testing With Google Analytics
Checking out the source code, this isn't going to work in IE8 and earlier without some small tweaks. IE didn't support `document.getElementsByClassName(string)` until IE9. It would be a small rewrite to make it work with IDs instead of classes (or you could use a shim).

[EDIT]: . . . But I like the idea. Might even use it next time I'm working with GA.

Timmy_C··on Firefox 16 live: Here's What's New
Anecdotally, I have an oddly large population of vistors to my site with Firefox 9. I don't know what changes were made to how Firefox updates around that time. But it seems like the update train has unwittingly left few users behind.
Timmy_C··on The dot enter mixtape: d3.js tutorial videos
I like the freestyle music in the background. Makes the videos seem more on-the-spot.
Timmy_C··on Apple Maps up to five times more data efficient than Google Maps
This is a false dichotomy. The data you're getting in iOS is not wholly incorrect. You're right that there are some big holes. But, in apps like foursquare, the speed gains are significant. Especially when you just need the map to find what your geo coordinates are.
Timmy_C··on As We May Think (1945)
I can't tell you how many times I had to read this in college. It was the first text we read in at least 5 of my courses my junior year.

Both classic and ahead of his time.

Timmy_C··on Why American Phone, Cable and Internet Bills are so High
Yes, Spectrum Networks is the other half of Condointernet.net.
Timmy_C··on Why American Phone, Cable and Internet Bills are so High
In Seattle we have a startup called Spectrum Networks which offers 100mbps fiber and microwave internet to a small set of condos and apartments. Last I checked, it was a 9 person operation. I don't see why more startups like this haven't cropped up in other towns.
Timmy_C··on Chrome no longer supports Mac OS X 10.5
What surprises me is that Chrome is still supported on Windows XP. I'm further surprised that you can run Chrome on a Pentium 3 if you're running Linux. The first Pentium 3 computers were introduced in 1999.
Timmy_C··on Vanilla JS, fast, lightweight, cross-platform framework
Yeah, Sizzle will grab an element using `document.getElementById()` but only after checking the nodeType of the context, ensuring the selector is a string and running the selector through a regular expression.
Timmy_C··on Vanilla JS, fast, lightweight, cross-platform framework
Recently, I was interviewing a front-end developer candidate and I gave them a simple JavaScript problem. The sad thing was, they didn't recognize `document.getElementById()` and didn't know any of the parameters to `addEventListener()`.

We finished the exercise assuming the example used jQuery instead.

Timmy_C··on Font that creates charts
I see this as a designer-friendly graphing library. In the video he demonstrates how to use the font using InDesign. And last I checked InDesign doesn't have graphing tools that are this simple.
Timmy_C··on The New Digg Arrives Ahead Of Schedule
Messy? Three articles above-the-fold and there are only three sections to the page.
