TheSOB888··on The programming talent myth
>I also was unable to ever learn my multiplication tables. >I don't have a learning disability

Maybe you don't have a learning disability, but you definitely seem like you have some sort of mental block that is preventing you from being able to learn certain things. Maybe things you consider boring, and you can't focus enough on them to get past them?

TheSOB888··on What Microsoft is this the Altair Basic of?
Did you want the MS job? I mean, I could figure out how to make things overlap without repainting, and I'm a 4-year-old child.
TheSOB888··on Searching 20 GB/sec: Systems Engineering Before Algorithms
Why would you need a B-tree when you only append to the end of the logs?
TheSOB888··on Searching 20 GB/sec: Systems Engineering Before Algorithms
Yeah, but the abstractions have a penalty on your mind.
TheSOB888··on You get what you pay for.
>Maybe I'm imagining things way better than they are

Yes, you are. Read the archives to learn more.

TheSOB888··on Scale of the Universe
I was saying that the bacterium is -larger- than the ovum. By a factor of 6.
TheSOB888··on My Management Lessons from Google, Apple, Dropbox, Twitter and Square
I think she meant that a lot of hemming and hawing in the conversation is really maddening to someone who can feel something negative is coming. The fact that it's said is the important part.

There's something to be said for read, fire, aim rather than ready, aim, fire. You can only aim if you have a good perspective on the issue, which you probably don't if you lack expertise.

TheSOB888··on Scale of the Universe
That largest bacterium's size is incorrect. It shows a chain of them as 750um, but in reality just one can become that large. In the picture, they look as big as a human ovum at 120um, but obviously that's not accurate.
TheSOB888··on This App Trains You to See Farther
Eyes feel blurry after playing this game. Uncomfortable. Want to go to bed.
TheSOB888··on Drawing as a programmer
Yes, you can still learn when you're older. Especially if you have an inquisitive mind like most hackers. The brain doesn't "solidify" completely as you age, it just solidifies the knowledge you already have. People have learned languages past 30, just by immersion, which is a very complex task.
TheSOB888··on Drawing as a programmer
That drawing is realistic yet creepy. I like it. The shading is perfect, yet incomplete. Sort of an uncanny valley type thing, gives you a sense of unease.
TheSOB888··on Ways to avoid using the word 'very'
Nope, anything you use a lot loses its punch. (That's the idea behind the article)
TheSOB888··on Flappy Space Program
Hey. Dude. This game is awesome.
TheSOB888··on Gog.com giving away Dungeon Keeper for free
You can't really play it for free. That's the thing. It's basically unplayable without payments. Why people don't just avoid it, though, that's beyond me.
TheSOB888··on Hemingway makes your writing bold and clear
These tiny sentences (in your version, and in Hemingway's stories) remind me of little children's books (and the alt-comedy storyline from the Martian steampunk shoot-'em-up Jamestown). IMO they appear a little condescending themselves.
TheSOB888··on Once the full stop meant a sentence was over – now it means you're angry
I am being judgmental - I'm suggesting he is wrong. It's just that in this case, he is judging a lot of others harshly, and I'm judging him for that.

We at HN are probably not the most emotionally connected anyways, so there's going to be a huge gap between the average HN experience/opinion on this topic vs. the general population.

TheSOB888··on Once the full stop meant a sentence was over – now it means you're angry
Reminds me of something I noticed in comics - you never put a period at the end of a speech bubble, but you can (and must, if applicable) put a question mark or an exclamation mark there. But there are times in Calvin & Hobbes where a few sentences fit into the bubble, and they have periods between them, but still never at the end.

It just belies the true purpose of periods: to separate two different sentences. So yes, it must mean something if it's there when it doesn't need to be.

TheSOB888··on Once the full stop meant a sentence was over – now it means you're angry
I have to agree with vdianuk (or whatever) here. You may not think you're being judgmental by applying criteria to others' grammar, but you are.

You aren't writing a book; you're talking to someone. IMing in completely perfect sentences does give an air of distance.

TheSOB888··on Flappy Bird Typing Tutor
This is pretty cool! I see you've written a JS game lib called Ω, but I can't find any more info about it. Is it not public yet? You seemed to have solved the problem of using sounds in JS, which is something I am very interested in.
TheSOB888··on Flappy Bird Typing Tutor
Same issue here. I thought I was supposed to press 1, or I, or l.
TheSOB888··on Flappy Bird creator, Dong Nguyen, taking down game; "I can't take this anymore"
Very true. Also, it's SNES games. Not NES games.
TheSOB888··on How I Learned to Stop Procrastinating, and Love Letting Go
I just have to say, I love washing dishes. I was convinced by Leo (the author) to start trying to enjoy myself while washing dishes, and now I love it. I don't even use the dishwasher anymore.
TheSOB888··on How I Learned to Stop Procrastinating, and Love Letting Go
That is nothing at all like happiness. Are you one of those people without emotions? It's OK, I was too for a long time. It happens a lot to people in tech, or people who end up in tech.

Anyways, happiness is an innate emotion. It's much more central than anything about "achieving" your goals. If you don't feel stressed about the future, don't wish you were somewhere else/someone else/doing something else constantly, if you are having your psychological needs met, you are happy. Goal-based happiness is almost as bad as money-based happiness. You have to be more well-rounded than just focusing on your goals.

TheSOB888··on Operating Systems: Three Easy Pieces
Er, ... What was the point of this post? I was hellbanned before because I got angry a long time ago.

I mentioned it because I realized I hadn't properly articulated my thoughts. Then I realized it didn't matter in the end. Of course, I guess that realization was wrong.

TheSOB888··on Operating Systems: Three Easy Pieces
First thing I clicked on was the "Dialogue on Virtualization," not being familiar with why virtualization would necessarily be the first thing taught in an OS, but then, that's why I'm looking at this, because I know nothing about building OSes.

Anyways, the dialog was pretty campy, or excessively goofy. Also, I'm probably hellbanned.

TheSOB888··on Value is created by doing
But they are close to the doing. They are only one step away from a person who is doing. Actually, hundreds of people who are doing.
TheSOB888··on Why am I here?
I suspect this won't be popular, but: Lucky you, Derek. You have the resources, and more important, the experience to be able to do that sort of thing.

Why am I in the US? Because I was born here.

(But people are friendlier in other countries, and life is less stressful.)

But I don't have the resources to just fly away.

(...Oh. Right.)

TheSOB888··on 180,000 Child Programmers Versus 44 Ogres
You're joking. There aren't a constant 10 deaths/minute in an average action movie.
TheSOB888··on Facebook set to finally launch auto-play video ads in news feeds
Well, yeah. The article says "so as to not use the users' data plans", so this seems like it's a mobile feature.
