TheRoque··on GitHub to Codeberg: my experience
They don't train on private repos, there has been no proof of that anyways
TheRoque··on Writing a good Claude.md
> but not using AI is simply less productive

Some studies shows the opposite for experienced devs. And it also shows that developers are delusional about said productivity gains: https://metr.org/blog/2025-07-10-early-2025-ai-experienced-o...

If you have a counter-study (for experienced devs, not juniors), I'd be curious to see. My experience also has been that using AI as part of your main way to produce code, is not faster when you factor in everything.

The other nightmare for these companies, is that any competitor can use their state of the art model for training another model. As some Chinese models are suspected to do. I personally think it's only fair, since those companies in the first place trained on a ton of data and nobody agreed to it. But it shows that training the frontier models have really low returns on investment
TheRoque··on Confessions of a Software Developer: No More Self-Censorship
My boss actually said that to me once. He said he really appreciated that I would say "I don't know" instead of bullshitting him. Of course I would also try to brainstorm with him or find the answer later on by searching.

TheRoque··on Three Years from GPT-3 to Gemini 3
The backlog is here because they didn't care to fix it, because it wasn't that important and it's not what's causing the business to fail. That's not what's gonna drive employment.
TheRoque··on Three Years from GPT-3 to Gemini 3
The thing is that the world is already flooded by software, games, websites, everyone is just battling for attention. The demand for developers cannot rise if consumers have a limited amount of money and time anyways.
TheRoque··on Three Years from GPT-3 to Gemini 3
That's also why I don't use these tools that much. You have big AI companies, known for harvesting humongous amount of data, illegally, not disclosing datasets. And they you give them control of your computer, without any way to cleanly audit what's going in and out. It's seriously insane to me that most developers seem to not care about that. Like, we've all been educated to not push any critical info to a server (private key and other secrets), but these tools do just that, and you can't even trust what it's gonna be used for. On top of that, it's also giving your only value (writing good code) to a third party company that will steal it to replace you with it.
TheRoque··on Three Years from GPT-3 to Gemini 3
So when should we start to be worried, as developers ? Like, I don't use these tools yet for cost + security. But you can see it's getting there, mostly. It could take a day before to find a complex algorithm, understand it, and implement it to your code, now you can just ask an AI to do it for you and it could succeed in a few minutes. How long before the amount of engineers needed to maintaint a product is divived by 2 ? By 10 ? How about all the boring dev jobs that were previously needed, but not so much anymore ? Like, basic CRUD applications. It's seriously worrying, I don't really know what to think.

Powershell feels like it's not built to be used in a practical way, unlike Unix tools that have been built and used by and for developers, which then feels nice because they are actually used a lot, and feel good to use.

Like, to set an env variable permanently, you either have to go through 5 GUI interfaces, or use this PS command:

[Environment]::SetEnvironmentVariable ("INCLUDE", $env:INCLUDE, [System.EnvironmentVariableTarget]::User)

Which is honeslty horrendous. Why the brackets ? Why the double columns ? Why the uppercases everywhere ? I get that it's trying to look more "OOP-ish" and look like C#, but nobody wants to work with that kind of shell script tbh. It's just one example, but all the powershell commands look like this, unless they have been aliased to trick you to think windows go more unixish

TheRoque··on 210 IQ Is Not Enough
It's not raw, in the sense that it's not an objective measurement. It's a comparison with other humans of the same age that took the same tests. 100 IQ means that you score in a perfectly average way, you're better than 50% of people that took that test and worse than 50% other people that took that test, it's a comparison, not really an absolute score.

So, to compare 100 IQ now with 100 IQ 50 years ago is hard, since you're not using the same test anymore.

There's an effect called the Flynn Effect which is essentially an inflation of IQ, so the tests are changed every few years so that it keeps the same distribution (so that the averagely intelligent human would score 100)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flynn_effect

In fact, you can't always compare the IQ tests of 2 humans alive, because the given score is comparing you to the other people of your age, not to the global population. So if you compare the IQ of a kid and middle aged man, it doesn't mean that one is more smart than the other in an absolute way (it's more a theoretical potential)

TheRoque··on Gemini 3
Stockfish totally dropped hand crafted evaluations in 2023.
TheRoque··on Google Antigravity
I'd say that because right now, verifying the LLM output (meaning: not trusting it) is a huge bottleneck (rightfully so). I guess they are trying to convince people that this bottleneck is no more, with this IDE.
TheRoque··on I don’t need a Steam Machine
Rightttt steam link, as I wrote this I wasn't sure it existed already or not. Perfect !
TheRoque··on I don’t need a Steam Machine
Yeah I think what they'll miss is a small tool to stream your games to your TV (well maybe it's already possible ?) because the drawback of having just 1 machine as PC and console is that it can't be both at your desk and in next to your TV
TheRoque··on I don’t need a Steam Machine
Not going to happen. In fact, they seem to go the opposite direction because there's more money to be made.
TheRoque··on I don’t need a Steam Machine
Exactly, I sold my Switch because I just happened to play most of my games on PC and steam. Worst case scenario, it can be a desktop computer (I don't have one, only a laptop)

Whereas a playstation or a switch, once I don't game anymore, it's just an expensive paperweight

TheRoque··on Valve is about to win the console generation
I guess you're right, even though it's possible to change the gabecube into a workstation and use it for work, never gaming, it's really unlikely it'll ever be a significant proportion of the buyers.

Since they have the steam deck, they also probably have enough data to back their new hardware strategy

TheRoque··on SIMA 2: An agent that plays, reasons, and learns with you in virtual 3D worlds
Except an RTS is designed around it

If the game needs to perform grind yourself, without delegating it (think Albion Online, Eve Online, Black Desert Online, Path of Exile etc. basically every MMO with economy), it means it's actively part of the game design, and delegating it to a robot is just cheating (and against the ToS in all of those cases)

So the point of GP's post, which I agree with, is that if that kind of grind is not part of the fun for you, then the game wasn't designed for you (and please don't cheat because you ruin other's fun)

TheRoque··on SIMA 2: An agent that plays, reasons, and learns with you in virtual 3D worlds
Personally, I think that if I need to delegate the grind, then the game is badly designed (or you are cheating)
TheRoque··on Valve is about to win the console generation
> Laptops have lots of components that the Steam Machine doesn't have. The screen, keyboard, touchpad, cameras, microphones, speakers, battery, et cetera are all fairly small costs, but they add up. Plus using a Linux-based OS instead of Windows automatically knocks around $50 off the price because the price doesn't include the cost of an OEM Windows license.

Yet's all the mini PCs I've come across are more expensive than their laptop equivalent

Because it's also about the demand, and how much you can mass produce them to reduce the cost

TheRoque··on Valve is about to win the console generation
"steam games", doesn't really mean anything. Most games are on steam nowadays. It mostly depends on the OS on which the games run. Games with kernel anti cheat: low cheaters population, runs on Windows but not Linux. Games without kernel anti cheat: low to high (think counter strike official servers) cheaters population.
TheRoque··on Valve is about to win the console generation
I don't think they have, but it's the business model of most consoles, to be able to be very affordable. So since the headline is implying it'll do better than consoles, it's implying it'll be sold at a loss too. But honestly, I find that article BS.
TheRoque··on Valve is about to win the console generation
If that's what happens, then I'm buying one of these right away for sure. I mean, I use steam a lot, but I certainly won't be locked in their "SteamOS". Maybe they are betting that most users will be too lazy to change the defaults and stick to SteamOS (which might very well be the case, and they have a hint of this thanks to the data they have on the Steam Deck)
TheRoque··on Valve is about to win the console generation
I hardly understand the headline. Steam machine is just a computer, and since it can be used for other stuff than playing games, then it can't have the cheap pricing of a console. Most consoles are sold at a loss, and the benefits are made when selling console-exclusive games. If you sell something at a loss, but users aren't forced to buy your games, then you're not gonna make any money. Hence, the Steam Machine (AKA GabeCube) is gonna be as expensive as a laptop (or slightly less expensive because of the bigger form factor and lack of portability).

On top of that, the base OS can't run a ton of games that run on console, because it runs in the way of kernel anti cheats (think: battlefield, call of duty, valorant, league of legends... the biggest games basically), while consoles are guaranteed to run most AAA games.

So with all that in mind - while I appreciate what Valve is doing a lot - I don't think it'll win the "console generation". I hardly see how it can even be called a console. It's just a PC, and that's how they call it themselves.

TheRoque··on Using Generative AI in Content Production
Whistleblowers, corporate leaks, output resembling copyrighted content etc. Basically it feels it's the same as the companies who unlawfully use licensed code as their own (e.g. without respecting GPL license)
TheRoque··on Using Generative AI in Content Production
Are you kidding me ? Everyone knows it's pirated content (aka stealing), there are a ton of proofs here and there:

- https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2025/02/meta-torrented-o... - https://news.bloomberglaw.com/ip-law/openai-risks-billions-a...

Other than that, just a bit of common sense tells you all you need to know about where the data comes from (datasets never released, outputs of the LLMs suspisciously close to original copyrighted content, AI founders openly saying that paying for copyrighted content is too costly etc. etc. etc.)

TheRoque··on How to maintain good vision amidst the myopia epidemic
I noticed this yes. I even had a eye exam with some eye drop that makes your muscle sore, so you can't focus closely anymore, but the doctor is 100% sure that muscles are not focusing passively
