TheLegace··on Motorola Makes The Moto G Official, A “Premium” Phone Starting At $179 Unlocked
It was kind of unfortunate since just 2 weeks before the price drop I had paid about $350 for the Nexus 4.

Well that's life I guess.

TheLegace··on 'Killer robots' ban must be part of Geneva talks, says campaign group
I have heard that Gazebo(Simulator) is used extensively for the DARPA challenge, have you had much experience with it? Does it save you any time and how practical/applicable is the simulation compared to the real world?

I had the opportunity to build my own robot in it, the furthest I was able to go was getting 2D navigation working based on some libraries in ROS using a laser scanner. Unfortunately I can't upload that video since my computer was too slow, but I made another one.

TheLegace··on 9/11 Suspects Can’t Mention being Tortured during Trial because Classified
I agree it's the problem in Canada as well. For the first time a third party was able to come ahead of one of the two parties, but this had disastrous effects as it provided the opposition party a majority government and overall weakened the power of the center-left and left. And right now I have to decide if my vote will mean anything if I vote for the third party.

The third party's platform will be mixed proportional representation. Which I hope we see one day so maybe this won't be such an issue any more.

TheLegace··on Why Isn’t Programming Futuristic?
I had the TC1100, was able to pick it up cheap from liquidator of computers.

I had to figure out ways to undervolt the CPU so I could extend the battery. The battery typically lasted maybe 1-2 hours, but by undervolting I had gotten it to about 3. It was incredibly bulky and heavy, and it had no actual touch ability. It would heat up quite a bit.

Now the one good thing about it was it had a very accurate Wacom digitizer and man could it write notes. Shame there was never a good app for it.(OneNote maybe).

I think Microsoft took a cue from the way TC1100 provides a keyboard(not a shitty SurfaceRT one) that you can connect to and it's sturdy. Something I think the Surface is doing.

So overall not a usable device. My only question is that someone like Steve Jobs being around the same time never thought to release an Ipad at the time. I wonder why, did he think that the tech just wasn't ready hence not worth spoiling the user experience.

TheLegace··on Ask HN: Why the Microsoft hate?
Exactly, I'm tired of hearing PC-esque defence of these incompetent companies. Their products have always been a bane, they suck.

I remember my HTC Diamond on the original Windows Phone failure.

TheLegace··on Why I moved to Miami
My favourite one:

>Disgruntled ex-boyfriend left thousands of voicemails on his ex-girlfriend's phone, adds sound effects like gunshots in the background for that added criminal charge[1]

TheLegace··on Why I moved to Miami
I actually really prefer the Winter. I personally think when you start feeling like a Canadian is when you enjoy the winter weather.

For whatever reason the sun in Canada really seems to burn(at least in Toronto area) and it can get really humid in the summers. But in the winter you can always just bundle up and feel comfortable.

TheLegace··on Wal-Mart Returning To Full-Time Workers
Oh my gosh, I could have sworn I was on the first page.

Sorry about that.

TheLegace··on Wal-Mart Returning To Full-Time Workers
>Wal-Mart’s competitor, Costco, a company that experienced a 19 percent increase in profits in Q2 2013 while paying its employees 40 percent more on average (the average Costco wage is $21.96 per hour) than what a Wal-Mart worker can earn. In that same quarter, Wal-Mart numbers revealed the company is going nowhere fast given its current state of operations.

>the availability of a store clerk to get to the rather critical job of moving the merchandise from the box to the shelf where a customer can actually purchase it. But when there are insufficient numbers of store clerks available—due to Wal-Mart’s commitment to using temporary workers or busting its full-time employees down to part-time so as to avoid worker benefit—the products Wal-Mart sells stay off the shelves and unavailable for customers to purchase.

TheLegace··on Who’s afraid of Jeff Bezos?
It's funny that's the case. But Yahoo is picking up on demographic that's slowly but surely adapting the Internet. My mom being a great example. She's been on the Internet as long as I have, but I would say she's adapting now. Unfortunately using Facebook, but also Youtube and all of her services from Yahoo(mail, news, search).

Say what you will about Marissa Mayer(I don't know enough about her). But she's making right decision on who her market is and although growth may be slower, I can see a larger number of people retiring that are going to be spending all sorts of time on Yahoo. Since HN is the anti-thesis of the Yahoo demographic, I think there is a more nuanced and emotional approach that Yahoo is taking. But I could be wrong.

edit: Also if anyone from Yahoo read this, please fix the problem with Yahoo mail and Chromium in Linux. My mom is annoyed by being asked to upgrade(Safari or Firefox) and asked to change the theme.

TheLegace··on Glenn Greenwald is leaving The Guardian
Not to mention this guy will get on the air and actually defend the interests of himself and all of us.

I listened to his interview with CBC Radio(no one listens to CBC Radio), and he is just so articulate and calm.

His defence against the douche bag on CNN(OR NBC) was inspiring, this is what people should be taking example of.

TheLegace··on Banksy Art Sale in Central Park [video]
Thanks for the video. I feel a little conflicted on my feelings towards Banksy. But I'm not really that invested in him or anyone else. It's just human behaviour I guess.

I'm not sure how to feel about Banksy and his war with Robbo. I feel for Robbo, that dude just had the worst luck.(I have the issue to).

TheLegace··on Microsoft Mission Impossible
Oh my gosh the days I remember playing Midtown Madness, it was the only game I ever really bought and played endlessly. It was such an addictive game. I can't believe it was made by MS.
TheLegace··on Banksy Art Sale in Central Park [video]
If your are all interested in Banksy I'd urge you to watch a film that he accidentally was forced to make about Street Art and himself, well let's say because the original Director...well you will see. It's called Exit Through The Gift Shop, I watched on Netflix.

I've always been a fan of Banksy's work. Especially the work he did at the dividing wall on both sides in the West Bank and Israel.

TheLegace··on Cypherpunks 2.0
Thanks, but as much I'd like to agree with opening things up, I don't think we have to give up our privacy or security for it.

By that exact same definition of software being interoperable and "aware" doesn't mean we have to expose our privacy. This may not be a popular option, but free(or paid) web services should allow us to store our own data, our own emails but make available interfaces and convenience of accessing our own stored data elsewhere.

The vast majority of people obviously do not care or even understand, they can happily choose to host on the cloud. I'm not letting my mom decide what Internet security and privacy laws should be. She cannot even comprehend what the implications of Facebook are.

I'd also like to mention not everyone lives in the hunky dory developed world where we're free to have opinions(debatable) and violent oppression is frowned upon.

The vast majority of the world does not live that way and has a lot of hardships to go through. Exposing their ability of free expression could hinder their ability to better their lives and maybe one day us.

TheLegace··on The war on drugs is a broken business model
Well actually there is a world of difference between Methamphetamine and Amphetamine (Adderall). They are in the same family like MDMA but the addition of a methyl group makes Methamphetamine a neurotoxin. "Methamphetamine is a potent neurotoxin, shown to cause dopaminergic degeneration."[1] So they although they share same traits, their hazardous effects are no where close to each other.

This is why drugs are complicated and different. Blanketing all "drugs" as bad while drinking Coffee, Whisky and Aspirin is just hypocritcal and dangerous.

TheLegace··on Poll: How many people here use Reddit?
For those that need a political discussion fix. I have found extremely deep debates from both liberal and conservative/libertarian views. /r/NeutralPolitics, /r/PoliticalDiscussion, /r/TrueAskReddit

There are really are thought provoking people on the Internet, they are just impossible to collect all in one place consistently.

TheLegace··on Lavabit founder offered to log users' metadata if FBI paid him $3,500
But then the question is why should you work for the Feds. At what point can they force you to implement something no matter what. Your not their employee, and you should have the right the refuse what you feel is unethical. There is nothing wrong with that. I took an entire class on the Engineering Ethics and now that $800 course which I loved is a waste of money for anyone that is forced to do work against their will.
TheLegace··on Meltdowns Hobble NSA Data Center
"But without a reliable electrical system to run computers and keep them cool, the NSA’s global surveillance data systems can’t function. The NSA chose Bluffdale, Utah, to house the data center largely because of the abundance of cheap electricity. It continuously uses 65 megawatts, which could power a small city of at least 20,000, at a cost of more than $1 million a month, according to project officials and documents."

I'm wondering if the heat in Utah may have an effect on operations, in the desert it can get very hot and cold.

TheLegace··on David Byrne: If the 1% stifles New York's creative talent, I'm out of here
This is exactly what Toronto is trying to do by subsidizing housing in metropolitan area.

People maybe inclined to argue against subsidizing more expensive housing in downtown areas, but the cost of commuting from lower income outer areas actually increases pollution, and traffic costs. It also breaks the poverty cycle by preventing geographic and possibly cultural segregation of the lower income families.

TheLegace··on Open Source made me the man I am
Definitely. I spent a lot of time at looking at code for microcontroller projects, Arduinos, AVR, STM32. For some people with experience they may take a weekend or two, but for someone who learns by reading code it's the building blocks of your career and success(or future success in my case ;).

TheLegace··on SeqAlign: Hardware Acceleration of DNA Sequence Alignment
I'm curious what people would think if they had this in their computers, laptops, game systems. So they could actively choose to help large scale computation for DNA sequencing or any other big scientific problem they could lend computation to.

I just put in two spaces like the formatting guide said. But the whole thing ended being one line.

What's even more interesting is

Although I believe the foregoing exchange demonstrates DPR's intention to solicit
a murder-for-hire, I have spoken with Canadian law enforcement authorities, who
have no record of there being any Canadian resident with the name DPR passed to
redandwhite as the target of the solicited murder-for-hire. Nor do they have any
record of a homicide occurring in White Rock, British Columbia on or about
  March 31, 2013.
TheLegace··on [dead]
I don't know what other people think. But as someone who loves Sci-Fi, I loathe this man and his approach to what he calls "art". I can't stand the many series and movies he's made.

Did not like Lost, I tried to watch a couple episodes of Fringe, I just hated it. It was bland, boring and feels so calculated. And Star Trek was a great example on how Hollywood movies are made nowadays, piece together a buncha action scenes and hope the story makes sense(I'm looking at your Iron Man 3).

Now I say this because I am not that big of a fan of Star Trek, I really liked TNG, Voyager and Enterprise, but I barely know anything about Star Trek(haven't even watched TOS) like many people do. But this man claimed on TV that he didn't like Star Trek, how on Earth can you expect someone to even understand it well enough to make a half decent movie. Especially considering the level of quality Star Trek is suppose to have.
