TheLegace··on Pro Max 5x quota exhausted in 1.5 hours despite moderate usage
I mean I get it logically makes sense. But it still seems like a waste of time for a small percentage of use cases.

Maybe a better approach is put in your login have it automatically detect if it requires an identity provider. Gray out the password to signal to the user password is not necessary and automatically redirect.

Less clicking, don't break flow and think of a smoother solution.

TheLegace··on Pro Max 5x quota exhausted in 1.5 hours despite moderate usage
Metrics and quantitative ux results in really bad software, making it rigid while optimizing for the wrong things.

The most obvious example is Google creating multiple steps for Login where you have to enter your password after you put in your user.

I wonder what metric lead to that decision or was it a political decision to make it seem like their "old" software has some new feature.

TheLegace··on France Launches Government Linux Desktop Plan as Windows Exit Begins
With the Windows VM are you doing GPU pass through to get native performance? Is there still a relatively minimal overhead doing it that way? I would be interested in running applications in their own Windows VM(one at a time at least) but the VM is essentially invisible and only application window is available?
TheLegace··on My MacBook keyboard is broken and it's insanely expensive to fix
I don't understand this logic. If lightning connector had less issues than USB-C how could it the users fault for not being careful. This exactly how engineers/developers answer to problems they cause with bad engineering/design choices. Anyone that gives feedback is blamed. It leads to terrible engineering decisions like the USB standard, which frankly has always been bloated and terrible because of its design by committee. As much I would love a standard connection port for all my phones I won't accept substandard engineering. That's why I am still holding onto my lighting connector devices even though on principle I disagree with using them.

Who gets to decide that I have to treat my devices that I pay for like fragile glass vases.

I do both QA and Development and pretty competent at both. I almost never make broken things or poorly thought out because I know this negative feedback loop will continually make the situation worse. Lack of empathy for people that use products just leads to issues like Windows taskbar not even being able to search for applications. Its all the same thought process that leads to the result.

TheLegace··on Boeing has started working on a 737 MAX replacement
Not to mention their customer service is amazing. I travelled several times, been to Shenzen, but mostly travelled to Shanghai for training and procurement of large manufacturing machines. To be honest I am a software person and was never really trained or taught fixing and maintaining moulds/machines.

But they have always been gracious and insanely dedicated to making sure my problems are solved and they show me how to rebuild everything. I have a dedicated WeChat group with their engineers and get back to me 7 days a week.

Compare that with a Candian machine, where I can rarely get a hold of a technican and they lack any deep expertise on anything even just to have a informal conversation on how to improve things at my plant.

TheLegace··on US authorities can see more than ever, with Big Tech as their eyes
Yes, ask any Canadian how they feel about their sovereignty right now. Let me know how the Riviera in Gaza is going to work out and enjoy that vacation in the Gulf of America. Do you remember when Solemeni got assassinated. I also hope your not what he calls "vermin" and end up in Guantanamo Bay. Just because they're so dumb and incompetent and incapable of accomplishing their goals(at this moment) doesn't make a spade a spade. Honestly I am not even surprised by this anymore your post describes exactly why fascism takes root, just endless justification of authoritarianism.
TheLegace··on Life expectancy/years of life lost in adults w ADHD in UK: matched cohort study
It’s not that simple. The brain is a very complex system and once you get other components of your brain to a neurotypical baseline or even better ADHD is a gift.

Those regions being sensory motor cortex and prefrontal cortex. But simply its a system of networks and attention regulation.

Those networks can be trained and I have experienced it first hand by reversing engineering my own brain and training it beyond normal baseline. This training is called neurofeedback and it transformed my ADHD into a super power.

During my evaluation my ability to focus(was measured) was worse than the average ADHD person. Afterwards it was above even normal people.

I need don't even consider myself someone with ADHD and everything just seems to come together naturally. ( Deadlines, managing details, time management and planning- all prefrontal cortex) The networks in my brain have been training to switch normally, and hyper focusing is just focusing but on anything I really want.

It was the cure I’d been searching for my whole life and it actually worked.

TheLegace··on Zildjian, a 400-year-old cymbal-making company in Massachusetts
You have to consider that when you are a new drummer you won't have good control of your power. So you will tend to hit things a lot harder just to keep up. This means you will break sticks and cymbals more often.

I have been playing for 10+ years that was a huge problem for me, but eventually your mind will adapt to dynamic nature of keeping time. I feel most people think keeping time as a singular action, but its mostly managing dynamics and spacing of music. Cymbals are fundamental to accomplish that.

I will say that I personally prefer Sabian since I am a rock/metal drummer. But Zildjian cymbals are thinner and softer they will have less volume but a brighter and more lush sound. Most of their products are designed for softer Jazz and Pop playing. If you want something in between Paiste and Meinl try to fill that gap.

TheLegace··on How to monitor your local weather with Grafana
Today was the first day I ever used Grafana and what a terrible day its been. Grafana really needs to simplify their interface. There is no point having so many features when you can't even use the most basic functionality without pulling your hair out.

If there is going to be an editable JSON panel at least separate out the presentation and data layers. I don't even know where to start with the query editor, NewRelic allows autocomplete using the text editor so instead of clicking it will use context to figure out what to show. If it weren't were all the available dashboards and pretty looking things I would just use chronograf.

TheLegace··on $1T Rout Hits Nasdaq 100 over AI Jitters in Worst Day Since 2022
There was a massive sell off(consolidation) happening from Jun 20th until Jul 2 on the S&P. I know I made some profit off a buy position, but noticed that the trend continuation was taking incredibly long time to start, which is rare in a uptrend. This sell off was already in the works, not to mention sell structure that developed at the top. I wouldn't be so quick to say these things are random. Institutions with billions of dollars don't do things randomly. There was no black swan event this time. It was just time for the over bought market not only to correct but to actually reverse.

This is based on institutional theories or smart money of how price plays out in the chart. I have developing my theory for years using those principles(i.e Wycoff Methods[1]

TheLegace··on The walls of Apple's garden are tumbling down
I agree its a concern. You could argue everything on XDA forums and any modified Windows should have the same problems.

Personally I use the community of version of Arch i3, not going to check the source on that, but will trust that community might keep an eye on anything nefarious.

Doesn't seem like Linux is completely immune from that either(i.e. XZ Utils).

But the build is amazingly stable and fast, and I will have to take it good faith that they didn't do anything that would harm me.

I can at least track down the author in various communities and seems to be semi-open about their identity. There is a forum thread any concerns I can bring up with the person responsible.

They are also taking donations. I would hope that exposes them to some liability and financial trail if they are found doing something illegal.

The min/max cost functions make a lot of sense(easiest to visualize). It also can do a lot when you do multi-objective optimization. But I have always wondered how you go about evaluating other cost functions. I mean mathematically the concept is intuitive. i.e. just swap it for a quadratic or exponential, but which cost functions are useful in the real world?
TheLegace··on Ask HN: What are some actual use cases of AI Agents right now?
How do you get the output to be formatted correctly or without any branches.

Say for example I want a step-by-step instruction for an action.

But the response will have 1. 2. 3. and sometimes if there are multiple pathways there will long answer with 2.a,b,c,d. This is not ideal I would rather have the most simple case(2.a.) and a short summary for other options. I have described it in the prompt but still cannot get nice clean response without to many variations of the same step.

TheLegace··on Posts, profiles, and user search are now available without login
I very much agree with your sentiment. Glad to see someone else recognize the problem with trying to find interesting content nowadays. I have noticed a negative relationship between sizes(after a certain threshold) of communities/platforms and the ability to find interesting content that is also suited to my preferences.

It seems like a ranking problem, you would think having upvotes/likes/points/etc. would be a good metric. But you just get an outsized influence of posts that have huge critical mass, and the content just becomes generic and clickbaity(i.e. Mr. Beast).

I think it is an optimization problem that has to balance competing needs and bring the best solutions under a wide set of criteria. This has been my experience trying to solve this problem, I already have a system that ingests huge amount of reddit posts from preferred and top subreddits. What I want to do is filter out the best content, then apply that generally to all content sources(YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, etc). Moving away from content that gives a short term dopamine hit to content that is an experience that changes structures in your brain. Ideally sustaining pleasure, intrigue, curiosity for longer periods of time.

There are sites with great UX like Scrolller[1] trying to solve the issue, but its only images/gifs.

TheLegace··on The New Essential Guide to Electronics in Shenzhen
I own this book. It was invaluable navigating Shenzhen electronics markets. In Shenzhen it is easy to find any electronic part you need and has an extensive recycling ecosystem. You can find parts on the street which find it's way upstream and end up in completed phones. Those phones are then resold.

That was my goal when I was there to build an iPhone in my hotel room by buying every individual part. And except for the thumbprint(because it needs to be reflashed) everything worked perfectly. I even named it my non-Sweatshop iPhone.

TheLegace··on The Techno-Optimist Manifesto
I don't know if you have been on the other side of what market makers do, but its not exactly a day at the beach. Once you gain enough insight to see whats going on the charts you just see it as a graveyard of traders positions, stop losses and their capital. This happens every minute the market is open at every timeframe.

Have you ever wonder why the markets appear so irrational? Great economic data and the worse drop in months or vice versa. These are the expectations, emotions and psychology of the masses that are liquidated by market makers. Have you also just had a gut instinct to buy or sell and market moves completely opposite beyond your psychological limit. Only for it to start moving into profit once you have closed at a huge loss. This is all market makers do all day.

In principle there is nothing immoral here. Participants are all taking risks voluntarily, no one is forcing you risk trading the stock market. But in practice market makers take positions at the stop losses 90% of market participants giving them significantly overwhelming supply of assets at the best prices, while everyone else sees consistent intractable losses.

This is a Darwinian environment where only the biggest, fiercest and most aggressive players will win by killing weaker, smaller and less knowledgeable players. The only way for a small fish to win is to understand the rules the market makers play by. Their strengths, desires, weaknesses, limitations and once you do you realize that this was someone's capital, but it's also capital not going to the market makers.

TheLegace··on The next Google
Just tried to search "t-sne" was pleasantly surprised the first result [1] was what I found on DDG and a good result. Compared to Google which couldn't even find it on the first page. Most of Google's result are not exactly useful, and the only useful article is not my favorite in terms of quality. Order being.

1. Wiki article 2. Github repo 3. API documentation 4. Introduction with Python Code(Not my fav quality article) 5. Guide in R 6. Research article

I can't quantify what is better. But Google didn't give me what I wanted but DDG and you.com did. So congrats. My only issue is seeing Medium articles above the web results. While Medium might have the answer in this scenario the top web result was correct but de-prioritized which was incorrect from my prespective.

UI is nice and fast, different too. Not sure if I love yet, but will keep trying. Thanks for the link. [1] https://towardsdatascience.com/t-sne-clearly-explained-d84c5...

I can tell you from first hand experience that neurofeedback is a life changing treatment. Far superior to ADHD stimulants which is a nightmare for some.

You can split up your buying and skimming profits over time so your building a position over many months to years and periodically taking profits near the tops and rebuying and increasing position every couple weeks when the market corrects.

Also another great thing to try is get SPX/USD on 500:1 leverage so on a good day when S&P goes up 2% with the leverage multiplier can significantly increase return.

TheLegace··on Adults with ADHD show decreased function in brain dopamine reward pathway (2010)
Yes the doctor who oversaw my treatment pioneered the treatment and is the thought leader in the field.

You can read her various papers[1]. I've read many things about ADHD and functioning mechanics of the brain. This is by far the most substantive and practical resource of info that I managed to put to go use when I trained my brain.

The training is about 1-2 hour sessions. You need about 20 sessions. They can completed once a week. But if your serious you would do 2-3 times the first 4-6 weeks to change things with greater momentum. After it is complete you never need to think about it again.
TheLegace··on Adults with ADHD show decreased function in brain dopamine reward pathway (2010)
There can be a lot to understand depending on how much change your actually looking for (so much I could write a book). But its just putting EEG electrodes on the skull to record frequency ranges in the brain. These frequencies(Delta, Gamma and Alpha) relate to the "focus", "relaxation"(related to meditation) and "cross-talk" functions of the brain that primarily are controlled by the Sensory-Motor Cortex.

There are many different programs all with different goals, some try to optimize the relax range, some focus and some try to minimize cross talk. Imagine looking at a screen and it shows your POV from inside a roller coaster car. On the sides you can see a bar chart going up and down and a threshold level you want to attain. Eventually you learn to control it so you bring that bar to the threshold and hold it (Holding it is key). If your really motivated you can tell the technicians to bring the threshold down so far that you are able to focus greater than the average person.

It begins by controlling muscles in your eyes effectively, once movements of the eyes have stabilized(this is the hyperactivity part that negatively effects focus) light can effectively move into the visual cortex. Then tying the other senses(sound and touch) together probably switches on the focus networks in the brain. This leads to experiencing reality at much higher "resolution".

I would advise having professionals around(like I did) they can spot problems/anomalies and can aid in training. It can be dangerous to mess with your brain without professionals around.

TheLegace··on Adults with ADHD show decreased function in brain dopamine reward pathway (2010)
Take a look at this new treatment(neurofeedback)[1]. It changed my life. Instead of changing brain chemically you can change the structure of your brain. It's not ADHD that's the problem, its the focus networks in the brain not being trained properly.

ADHD becomes a gift when you can focus and the brain just naturally learns, and memorizes very well. I went from being incapable of anything to being really great at anything I wanted to be (just late to the party). [1] http://addcentre.com/

TheLegace··on A new form of brain stimulation relieved severe depression in a small study
I found out about it in this book The Body Keeps the Score[1]. Its a massive book, so I would just focus on the Neurofeedback section. But it doesn't have the first hand experience so mileage may vary. By co-incidence the researcher that pioneered this breakthrough treatment was located in the same city as me. You can see some of the videos[2], but it will be difficult to understand and appreciate unless you spend a lot of time reading papers and learning about the brain. I will say its worth it to learn, especially if you want your ability to focus to go from below average to far above average. Feel free to email me if you want details, I had to become well versed at it out of necessity more than anything.

TheLegace··on A new form of brain stimulation relieved severe depression in a small study
> Intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) is a noninvasive brain stimulation treatment that has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treatment-resistant depression.

If this is anything like Neurofeedback treatment, it wouldn't surprise me that it is effective. Neurofeedback treats 3 major frequency ranges of the brain, Delta, Theta and Alpha. Although this treatment seems passive whereas Neurofeedback treatment requires active modulation and stimulation by the person getting the treatment.

Going through Neurofeedback treatment myself and seeing the incredible life changes because of it and now seeing the similarity of the affected brain regions in this study shows that there might be some consensus reached on treating these conditions without medication one day.
