TheLegace··on A practical guide for learning meditation through the art of gaming
I've had severe attention issues, that I always thought it was caused by ADHD, but after many years of trying everything I could possibly think of. I realized it was caused by anxiety deeply rooted in painful emotional experiences which influenced how I reacted to stimuli. I realized this after a reading a book on trauma. After suffering from terrible panic attacks for many months. and tirelessly trying to meditate for many hours a day for months I wasn't seeing any progress. I still couldn't sleep, and felt like I would never be able to relax or focus on anything. My life completely changed after doing Neurofeedback training.

By far the most amazing technology available for improving the mental condition of human beings. There is a reason people can super focus on things they enjoy, your emotions are the guide to what you choose to put attention on. When you have nervous, anxious or negative reactions to anything because of past experiences and preconceived notions you cannot fully concentrate or go in and out of flow states.

You can use EEG sensors to see the reactions your brain has to any task, concentrating, reading comprehension or math problems. With the technology you can see how your brain is reacting, how it "focuses", how "calm/alert" it is and if its "daydreaming" and my major problem which was "busy-brain". When you can see and hear feedback, you can "feel" how flow/concentration are constantly being interrupted. Eventually you can train your brain get into these flow states, get into them faster and under stress. I am only 25% through all my sessions and I have just begun to feel and see the magic that is flow. You conscious mind just shuts off and you just "do it".

This is makes a huge impact of meditation as well, you can sit still and focus on your breath, but I find it far more effective to focus on your feelings. I try to guide them and bring them towards courage, passion, love and appreciation. Which brings them closer towards inspiration and happiness and a better functioning mind.

This is all just from physically/emotional painful experiences. So I guess just take with a grain of salt. But it's made huge differences in my physical/mental well-being.

TheLegace··on Regular meditation may be more beneficial than vacation
Wow thank you so much.

I began reading Transforming Stress and in two days it has already changed everything my life. I have been going through post-traumatic stress and my abilities to concentrate and function have been crippled. Horrible panic attacks, painful migraines, irrational fear and despair are beginning to wane.

I received the emWave2 today, best $250 I have ever spent. I am bringing up my coherence and the horrible chest pains have been going down in just 3 20min sessions of using the device. I might finally be able to program after all.

I think you need to see what Dr. Danielle Martin[1] a Canadian doctor had to say when she testified to the U.S. Senate defending the Canadian system.

The reference was to Newfoundland Premier Danny Williams’ controversial 2010 decision to undergo heart surgery at a Miami hospital.

“It’s actually interesting,” replied Dr. Martin, “because in fact the people who are the pioneers of that particular surgery … are in Toronto, at the Peter Munk Cardiac Center, just down the street from where I work.”

She then hinted that Mr. Williams was of the mistaken belief that simply paying more for something “necessarily makes it better.”[2]

But doesn't that also mean that the rich have more mobility to move to another country with much lower taxes or just hide them like they do now? Are there even any estimates on how much money is lost due to tax evasion? Let alone the costs of lobbying (which must be expensive) and the negative costs from the consequences of said lobbying(Iraq War). Not to mention the costs of lost productivity due to monopolies(Comcast).

I guess the more important question is does it even make a difference no matter what you do. The rich will find some way to break down the system sooner or later. This seems exactly what happened in the last 30-40 years.

The answer doesn't seem to be financial, it's social. And maybe it will take an entire generation to suffer(somewhat comparable to the Greatest Generation) to truly appreciate being poor and disenfranchised.

TheLegace··on Public speaking is tough
Sweet I thought I was the only metalhead on HN.
TheLegace··on HTC One X and One X+ will not receive KitKat; stuck on Android 4.2 forever
I cannot for the life of me understand why the Huawei Ascend P1 is faster than the newer Nexus 4. As soon as I upgrade Android to 4.4(Which was a huge hassle) the phone is perfect, it's thin and light and OLD and I just want to toss my stupid Nexus 4 away.

It has something to do with the screen latency and bunch of other factors.

TheLegace··on Oculus VR’s New “Crystal Cove” Prototype Is Kind of Amazing
Not to mention the global reach of such technologies. Imagine XBox Live with laser tag/VR FPS and people from all over the world could play. There could be massive tournaments and competitions.
TheLegace··on TED: Body parts on a chip
I should add this is a TEDx talk, I didn't manage to put it in the title, maybe a mod can fix it.
TheLegace··on Scientists Petition U.S. Congress for Return to the Moon
Well this isn't meaningful in any way. But my earliest memory of wanting to be a Engineer was watching the Space Shuttle launch on TV when I was a young lad. Then I went on to destroy our VCR the same day.
TheLegace··on Flawed spacesuit delays ISS repairs
Knowing how NASA operates, it's very likely they have a detailed document outlining procedures.

I remember reading the Space Shuttle specification and there were contingencies for abort at various stages and if an incident happened what to do about it.

TheLegace··on How to defend yourself when your photo is ridiculed on Reddit
I've come across some subreddits that are private. I'm assuming this is what your looking for.
TheLegace··on Google Acquires Seven Robot Companies, Wants Big Role in Robotics
There is a great documentary talking to the guys who engineered the robot. Interesting story they are a couple of research students at University of Tokyo wanting to develop the robot for the DARPA Robotics Challenge, but there is a rule at the University that no military funded projects are allowed. So these guys are doing it independently, pretty awesome guys I wish them the best. In the documentary[1], you can see how SCHAFT robot works in detail.

TheLegace··on Have I been pwned? Check if your email has been compromised in a data breach
The crazy thing my simple password was used by 5 other people. Luckily my email password is much more complicated.
TheLegace··on Why You Can't Build a Smartphone
I actually hate the developing for the web, so FirefoxOS has no real interest for me. I'm grateful for the work those guys are doing, but I will never create HTML5 apps. I'm more of a systems, and robotics programmer and I love it but somehow these interests can never overlap with the way FirefoxOS functions.

So there isn't much of a value proposition for me.

TheLegace··on No Girls Allowed
Makes me think of this, obviously causation != correlation but it's a funny graph1[1] nontheless.

TheLegace··on F1 2014: All aboard the 'power train' - new rules explained
I don't know when I think about how the F1 car can drive upside down it almost makes me want to see these awesome 3D tracks where cars do all sorts of death defying racing and tracks that we have seen in science fiction become possible because advance AIs are so much faster.

Maybe people would want to watch it on video or even VR so it seems like they are actually there. Who knows if done right it could be a better experience then looking at 1 piece of a race track for hours.

TheLegace··on Why You Can't Build a Smartphone
Exactly rather than focusing why a smartphone can't succeed, I'd like to see how and why a phone can succeed.

If anyone thinks that the mess in the Play Store and the development environment of Android doesn't leave a bad taste in your mouth they should really re-consider thinking that Android is going to be around forever. I would like to ditch this platform the first moment I get. There are a lot niches that are not addressed by market players today, and the overlap between them can wedge a dent in the market. Google has serious weakness in hardware, and it looks like they will never get over that hump. Can you honestly expect them to optimize performance and battery life, if they can't even make their own devices.

Niches like:

Open-Source/Flexible development environment

Sustainability

Emerging Markets

Actual Innovation

Disruptive technologies and emerging markets shouldn't be counted out either. Nor should finding ways to monetize open-source. People, developers especially are increasingly looking for open platforms/devices, that market is NEVER going to get smaller only bigger.

Imagine actually being able to use Javascript or Python or Clojure for your apps, or scripts. Will you actually discount a platform where you can program without managing a thousand configuration files or worry about the gatekeepers(Google/Apple). See these problems aren't necessarily problems in Linux(not to say there aren't other drawbacks).

The great(maybe not?) thing about innovation is that if your to busy looking at the technology today your going to completely miss out what is coming next. - At least it's great if your competing.

I can't help thinking about what Jobs says, "Experts" are clueless.

>Experts—journalists, analysts, consultants, bankers, and gurus can’t “do” so they “advise.” They can tell you what is wrong with your product, but they cannot make a great one. [1]

[1]http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-20117575-37/what-i-learned...

People seriously underestimate the power of a great product. Products that don't rely on massive feature lists that mean nothing a day after buying your device. I regret falling into this trap and wasting precious time instead of thinking about creating a better product experience. But again this is easier said than done.

TheLegace··on How to Burst the "Filter Bubble" that Protects Us from Opposing Views
I've found that subreddits like /r/changemyview do a good job of stating opposing views, I know people aren't big fans of reddit here, but there are subreddits where polar opposing views are actually encouraged. I think(hope) one day people might get bored of their filter bubble, and may one day seek solutions to answers that aren't one dimensional as left or right.

Apparently you can get Gimp to look almost like photoshop[1]. You can see it's a fairly simple interface. The screenshot actually makes it look fairly clean.[2]

God yes, for some reason you can't disable apps like you could in Android 4.3. Overall kitkat has really been bugging me, I think I am just going to go back to 4.3 and stick with it until some other platform comes along.
TheLegace··on Thrun pivots Udacity toward vocational education
Also, I wasn't to fond of using black background and bright colored squigly writing for learning calculus. I have ADHD and learning math and calculus has been such a huge challenge. But I found work done by patrickjmt[1] to be amazing. It's clear neat and concise, and was able to get through Single and Multivariable thanks to him. My girlfriend and my sister really loved the way he explained calculus as well.

TheLegace··on Jury: Newegg infringes Spangenberg patent, must pay $2.3 million
What about Australia, Canada or New Zealand? And what happens if you would like to offer products and services in the US(which is a huge market). I'm assuming just like Samsung they are still liable if they want to sell something.

I'm genuinely curious and concerned.

TheLegace··on This Google ad has moved people to tears across India and Pakistan
It brings me memories of the violent riots because certain stores were celebrating Valentines Day in India.
TheLegace··on Rise of the Robot Artist
It's really interesting to see how art, architecture and engineering mix together. You can have a variety of more practical applications in house building[1]. Or you can see more artistic, non-practical uses but are heavily rooted in engineering and architecture [2][3][4]. It's gets even more interesting when you throw robotics into the mix humans could create things that are physically impossible today.

TheLegace··on Google to pay $17M fine in smartphone privacy breach
>Google Inc will pay $17 million US to settle allegations in 37 states and the District of Colombia that it secretly tracked web users by placing special digital files on the web browsers of their smartphones.

>The Safari web browser used on iPhones and iPads automatically blocks third-party cookies, but Google altered the computer code of its cookies and was able to circumvent the blocks between June 2011 and February 2012, according to the states' allegations.

TheLegace··on Ask HN: Google employees, why is G+ more important than your users?
My apologies then. I will contact the app developer.
TheLegace··on Ask HN: Google employees, why is G+ more important than your users?
The worst part is I can't even disable it if I am using my another SMS app, so now I have to clear two notifications for my text message and 50% of the time I usually end up in the Hangouts app where I don't want to be.

When will this madness stop?

TheLegace··on Bitcoin Companies and Entrepreneurs Can't Get Bank Accounts
My only issue with something like this, since no one is "in charge" of an account people will fail to remember their wallet or password. If they put large amounts of money and by chance they cannot access their wallet for whatever reasons who is going to give them their money back or is that money gone forever? Doesn't that also mean eventually we will loose track of a fair number of bitcoins?
TheLegace··on MIT inFORM ShapeShifting Project – 2.5D Interactive Morphing Table
I really like the concept of seeing 2 variable math functions in 2.5D. I wonder if these things could have better resolution(more linkages) they can really help interactive and MOOC based education platforms in a not to distant future.

I'd like to see a professor make a class all around the world live or pre-recorded in many classrooms where kids could interact with the things they learn so they might actually be interested in Math, Science, Physics, Biology etc. Not even for the sake of for a career but maybe just for the sake being curious and interested in something.

TheLegace··on Alexis Ohanian on Colbert Report [video]
Well it seems like a significant majority of people may not understand what crowdsourcing and a minority not even know what reddit is just got a chance to hear about it.

Even people I know who are in Engineering programs do not know what reddit is and generally how Internet technology could benefit them.

I don't know if you are from SV, but it seems like someone is stuck in a classic SV bubble.

Besides you never hear about the work people in tech do especially on Colbert and Daily Show. I have watched these shows religiously for many years and the only thing on peoples minds are Healthcare(US) and Rob Ford(I'm from Toronto ;).
