TheHumanist··on Studying stars with central black holes
Is that kind of the same as the idea that if you are approaching a wall but each step is only 50% of the rest of the way to the wall, so you would never reach the wall no matter how close you got?
TheHumanist··on Possible to detect an industrial civilization in geological record? (2018)
That's a frustrating response, because you must surely understand as a whole what they are saying.

Artifacts that would have been used by these civilizations, whatever those may have been.

I completely agree. I was just saying for the person I replied to that maybe Reddit was more their thing, which is fine. I still use Reddit for some things. It can be a really great resource at times. But I much prefer to spend my time on HN, overall.

And yes, the community and moderation here are a literal breath of fresh air compared to most of Reddit.

I mean, Reddit may suit your needs? I find HN pretty perfect for my needs. The simplicity keeps me coming back. I find all the things you mention to be benefits, personally.

haha same. turned off VPN, tried again, just to check. Reset router too. Couldn't be HN, must be me and mine

Ok, so if I wanted to walk through downtown on a pretty day and livestream that, it will have a bright light to let people know I am recording? I can't just do that subtly?

But aren't the lenses more obvious on these? Just looked at the Glass and I guess they are about as obvious as the lense on that but the glass stands out more for sure because of its design (which I loved).

Oh is this your project? It's really cool!

Ok, so how long have you had these? I was unaware they had released these but they look pretty fun AND the price point is surprisingly approachable. Are you wearing these out in public pretty regularly? Are people noticing the lenses? My main concern with buying these is that I will end up not wearing them in public eventually, which kind of makes them not super useful. I worry about that because I can see some people seeing those lenses and going off on the whole bit about am I filming them? am I filming their kids? And we all now the rabbit hole of uncomfortable public social iteractions this can take one down. So, I worry I would run into too many of these people downtown or something and end up being anxious about even wearing them out anywhere.

What is your experience and how long have you been wearing them around in public (if you are)?

Also, legit question... how did you succesfully make an alt facebook account? lol Anytime I try with a different name so I can have an alt for buying stuff on marketplace it blocks that new account out because I can't verify it is me (because it's a fake name).

This is my main concern. These lenses are much more obvious than the Google Lense cameras as well. I'd love to use some cool tech like this but I can absolutely see some people seeing the lenses and being confrontational and trying to act like you are purposefully filming them, or their kids... or something along those lines. Yes, it is legal to film in public but I'm not trying to have those sorts of confrontational interactions.
TheHumanist··on Show HN: Hacky Meta Glasses GPT4 Vision Integration
Ok so do you just wear these around in public? Do you think people will see the pretty obvious lenses and be confrontational? That's the only thing stopping me... I love tech like this but I'm not trying to get bitched at in public when people think I'm filming them or their kids or something like that, you know?

TheHumanist··on Food and Generative AI
This is exactly how I feel. I want it to actually be helpful.

It needs to be able to:

    - track what I have (if I have input that data) and how soon anything may expire

    - track what I made but haven't finished eating (just a few quick pictures in the fridge should update that as needed, or maybe it's time we all get that Alton Brown in-fridge camera to talk to)

        - can I use this in something else? How long should it still be good? Etc...

    - track my health/nutrition goals

    - track what I've already eaten (again, the onus is on me to make sure that data is there) so it can help me follow my health/nutrition goals

    - track local grocery store fliers for deals (I do this on my own with the app Flipp and save a ton of money, but if the AI could handle that... that'd be great)

    - tracking local grocery store prices would be great too, but unlikely. They need us to come into the store for hopeful impulsive purchasing

    - I'm sure there are more things
Not saying this is remotely simple to pull off... just what I would want in an AI that is helping me with recipes and food. I can't wait until we can utilize it for things like that.

Actually just deleted it from my phone this morning. It's beyond garbage. I cringe every time I need to open it. But I realized I never really need to open it. So it's gone. Awful app.

TheHumanist··on DoNotPay – Your AI Consumer Champion
The entire site reads like tons of clickbait articles.... 'Is Bill.com legit?? Click here before signing up for Bill.com!'

I was mentally exhausted by it after a few minutes. I imagine there are good intentions behind it but it honestly offers TOO much. There are so many options you continually scroll through. Even if it could help me I wouldn't use it because of that.

TheHumanist··on Ask HN: How do you make time for side projects and Leetcode grinding
I'm a newer dev... just under a year and feel I've made decent progress in that time. I hear about leetcode a lot but honestly am not really sure what it is, why it's talked about so much, why people 'grind' leetcode... and why do you specifically do a leetcode problem each week? Is it specific to just a certain small set of languages?

Are the specific types of questions asked by FAANG companies in interviews?

What's up with leetcode?! lol

TheHumanist··on GPT-4 is not getting worse
Yes, you're mad, bonkers, off the top of your head...but...I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are.
TheHumanist··on GPT-4 is not getting worse
I use for the same reasons as you and over all, yes, it has been doing a great job. It really has. BUT lately (maybe the last 4 - 6 weeks?) I have noticed more issues with hallucinations early in a conversation or it completely losing context after just 2 or 3 prompts (and no they are not oddly long prompts).
TheHumanist··on GPT-4 is not getting worse
It's wild how sometimes it seems to completely lose context after just 2 or 3 prompts. Most of the time it doesn't but just yesterday I gave a prompt, pasted some code in... didn't really like the first response but wanted to build off it.

So, I asked a follow up in the next prompt and in the next response it was wildly off-base and it's response made no sense and it had hallucinated all these functions into my code that had no business there. 2 prompts from me, 1 response from gpt and then it's second response it is completely lost.

TheHumanist··on GPT-4 is not getting worse
I was 'arguing' with it just yesterday about this with some coding work!

I am newer to some things I am currently working on so it's been like a free tutor/mentor. Really nice at times.

But lately, it will go into an explanation with code examples and part way through the code examples it adds things like '# The rest is very similar. Not including for brevity'

Not exact wording of what it says but it is essentially saying that. It is incredibly annoying because I have started telling it not to do that, to include the full code of the example, and it STILL DOES THIS.

No, I'm not getting it to code for me. The examples aren't even things I would use in my code but for teaching me certain concepts along with them walking through them with me which, in the past, worked really well and never had this repetitive issue.

GPT-4 is definitely operating differently.

TheHumanist··on Sam Bankman-Fried's jail conditions offer a glimpse at systemic failure
I don't believe that giving people vegetables puts undue stress. I don't believe that SBF hasn't been presented with vegetables or fruit either. I imagine they are canned and not fresh and beautiful, as he's come to expect. I think he's being a little brat.

I just meant that they have limited ingredients and set meals planned for each day. It isn't a restaurant where you have a menu to pick from.

I appreciate your response. I almost didn't even make the original comment because I knew I would get 'conspiracy nut' responses, as I did lol I promise, I'm the furthest from a conspiracy nut.
