TheHumanist··on Cups tossed in recycling bins at Starbucks tracked to incinerators and landfill
Plastic is not recyclable
TheHumanist··on I've tracked every piece of clothing I've worn for three years (2021)
I spend maybe $300 in a year on clothing. I ship at Goodwill and other thrift shops. I cannot imagine spending that much annually just on clothing. Would feel like such a chump.

I will buy new running shoes... And hiking boots if needed but even then I wait until I can get 40%-50% off. My last Keen boots were 55% off. My last Brooks running shoes 40% off.

TheHumanist··on Show HN: I made crowdwave – imagine Twitter/Reddit but every post is a voicemail
You are laughably incorrect. Do you have kids? They are face timing and sending audio messages constantly. Maybe cut the snark or take it back over to Reddit?
TheHumanist··on Show HN: I made crowdwave – imagine Twitter/Reddit but every post is a voicemail
Have two teens. They call and do voice chats (Discord, etc.) all the time. Face time is huge with their generation, for example. Now two things they don't seem to do is leave voicemails and check their voicemail. But, they do call people tons. Way more than I do. I'm 41 and hate phone calls lol and face time? Hell no. I'm good on that. Their generation loves it.
TheHumanist··on Show HN: Anycast+ – An AI-powered podcast app
The most painful audiobooks I've found are the ones that are volunteer narrated. I think it was for Librivox or something like that? Holy hell it is bad every single time.

But yes, there are some professional narrator that I am baffled as to how they get paid to narrate other audiobooks because they just cannot convey the story. It is such a disappointment when, as you mentioned, you are excited about a book and you run into one of those narrators.

TheHumanist··on It's Sounding Like Boeing's Starliner May Have Failed
Exactly where my mind has gone repeatedly in this saga.

How do you all not understand this now? Fix your shit, then launch.

But, as you said... Just as with Challenger, business and political pressure.

TheHumanist··on What happens in a mind that can't 'see' mental images
Apt comment. I was sitting here thinking to myself, "Do I see mental images often? At all? Yes I think I do... But is it less than others? Or about normal? How would I know?"

Also, I think people who say they have no inner monologue think an inner monologue is like JD on Scrubs thinking to himself.

TheHumanist··on Low-income homes drop Internet service after Congress kills discount program
Roof over their head, food, water/sewer, medications, possibly gas and vehicle upkeep depending on location, children's expenses, and internet.

I realize there are other bills as well. Just trying to make a point on the importance factor.

Not meant to come across snarky or anything. I've known people that just couldn't afford that. Some of those other bills were already subsidized.

Also you should take into account that this level of poverty in a developed nation can often be accompanied by some serious mental health issues. That can make correctly managing their money much more complicated and difficult. Also lack of education in school systems on how to properly manage your finances as well. Maybe that would have been the only place they learned that.

It is really, really rough out there for some folks.

TheHumanist··on LG and Samsung are making TV screens disappear
Of course not, but I don't believe most people I am friends with (or family) spend time really looking into products before they buy. Maybe a car or something? But a TV? When you can get them for $200-$300 at Walmart? Unlikely, unfortunately. So, that business model still works.

I realize my very small social bubble is not remotely large enough for an actual population sample, but I feel like it's just common sense. Things like Temu exist because this is a very common way of thinking.

TheHumanist··on Four billion years in four minutes – Simulating worlds on the GPU

TheHumanist··on SAM 2: Segment Anything in Images and Videos
That would be really cool to try out. I hope someone is doing that.
TheHumanist··on Cure for male pattern baldness given boost by sugar discovery
Yeah, that finding unfortunately killed any excitement I may have had for this lol I feel like saying Minoxidip is barely effective is almost even giving it too much credit.
TheHumanist··on Cure for male pattern baldness given boost by sugar discovery
And you let him grow. I started balding around 26 or so and have this tuft in the front that actually doesn't look ridiculous and from.the front makes it look like maybe I'm a little less bald.

I've yet to be able to let that tuft go lol they are trying their damnedest and far be it from me to squash that effort.

TheHumanist··on Rent in Cities Skylines 2 was too high, so the devs removed landlords
You must mean 'existed' in Ultima Online. Hardly anyone plays it anymore, unfortunately. Still my favorite gaming memories.

Tigers better watch out too... I hear tuna are working on developing a series of breathing apparatus so they can go on land to hunt and kill tigers.
TheHumanist··on Ask HN: Struggling. Could use some advice/direction professionally
What do you mean by "contribute to society without permission"?
TheHumanist··on Ask HN: Struggling. Could use some advice/direction professionally
I try. My depression is definitely at it's all time worst. I've accomplished some crazy shit at times, but at this point it is very very difficult to see any light at the end of the tunnel or any of that which in turn kind of lays this dark, weighted blanket over my world and makes everything feel so very difficult, exhausting, pointless... If that makes sense. I am trying hard to throw that blanket back off me but it is heavy as hell haha
TheHumanist··on Ask HN: Struggling. Could use some advice/direction professionally
I really appreciate your comment. Won't lie... was really sad to see only two people responded when I returned to this haha But, your comment was helpful. I never thought to look in the public sector. I just always assumed they would not hire someone with a criminal background but after reading your comment and researching it a bit, it isn't out of the realm of possibility... so I'm going to dive in and see if I get any bites.
TheHumanist··on What happens when an astronaut in orbit says he's not coming back?
Didn't that happen in a plane recently? There have been so many random issues in the air lately, especially with the Boeing planes... so I may be misremembering, but I thought some guy opened the emergency hatch and the plane was up there pretty high at the time.

Paused my reply and took a moment to search. Looks like I was right and wrong. The plane wasn't very high in the air, only about 700 feet. A man did open the emergency hatch, though. [1]

TheHumanist··on Advice for new software devs who've read all those other advice essays
It isn't as much learning as maintaining focus. I struggle badly with that regardless of my interest in a topic.
TheHumanist··on Advice for new software devs who've read all those other advice essays
Gotta throw like... two sticks in the pond... or a couple rocks... that will help.
TheHumanist··on Advice for new software devs who've read all those other advice essays
Right, but the original commenter is saying read all the docs, front to back. That's just nonsense.
TheHumanist··on Advice for new software devs who've read all those other advice essays
Advice like that above is honestly terrible for newer developers, I believe. It feels insurmountable for many people, myself included. I simply don't have the brain capacity to:

A. Read an entire language's docs front to back. As you mentioned, maybe if it is some small, silly thing but for something like Python, Java, JS, etc... no fucking way. My brain would constantly glaze my eyes over. There is so much.

B. Retain the information I just attempted to read. Again, there is so much. It's insanely unrealistic for most people, I would think.

New developers see advice like this and immediately feel like they aren't cut out for this because people make this nonsense sound like something 'YOU MUST DO' to be a good developer. It's toxic, in my opinion. Maybe not intentionally so, but it really can kill a person's excitement.

TheHumanist··on Advice for new software devs who've read all those other advice essays
Is it laziness or is it the fact that brains are different and many people (me included) can't absorb that much material and then retain it as well with so many other things going on in our work/lives. I would struggle just to read the entire docs, front to back, of anything in a sitting. Then to retain all that?

"lulz" -my brain

TheHumanist··on Advice for new software devs who've read all those other advice essays
Many people's brains cannot absorb that much information. If I sat down and read full docs front to back I would remember maybe 3 things. I don't think this is overall practical advice. Then reading the source code too for all this stuff I like? I don't understand where one finds the time for all this? I'm not putting you down, I just genuinely am confused. I barely get my stuff done as it is each day haha
